Born to the Malayalam poet, Padmabhushan and Saraswathy Samman awardee, Nalapat Balamani Amma, and V.M. Nair, managing director and managing editor of Mathrubhumi. Sulochana completed her MBBS at Calicut Medical College in 1963. Thereafter, she worked as medical officer on the tea gardens of James Finlay & Company in Munnar and later, as advisor to the Comprehensive Labor Welfare Scheme of United Planters Association of Southern India. Sulochana retired in 1994 from the corporate office of Tata Tea, Calcutta, as manager of the Community Development and Social Welfare Department. Renowned Malayalam writer Kamala Das’s younger sister, and a writer herself, Sulochana has authored ten books in Malayalam and a pictorial in English titled The Story of Munnar.
