They came out of the sun and through the dust cloud created by the herd, firing their Winchesters and killing the men who were moving the cattle to Abilene. Each man fell just minutes after the attack began and the stampeding cattle finished the job that the rustlers’ .44s had started. Just hours later, the herd was already gone, the dust settled, and bodies were strewn along the ground. But one stirred and would never forget what he saw as his eyes opened.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Constructive Critique

I really enjoyed the first book written by C.J. Petit. Then after reading the second and third books I was very disappointed to realize they were all almost identical plots and back-stories so much time and expense could have been saved by just changing the principles names and titles of the books.

THE REVOLUTION OF MARTY DURST

Three families get together and decide that they will drive their cattle collectively and that way they get more money. Another bigger rancher named Mayer charged them a dollar a head to drive them to Abilene the year before now he's charging them five dollars a head to include them with his cattle....greedy Mr. Mayer. Well the three families Durst, Wagner and Bauer have everything all in order and they are ready to head them out for Abilene, where the cattle buyers are located. Well, before they even cross the Wichita River, they are hit by rustlers, they didn't hear the horses nor did they see the dust, because of the six hundred head of cattle were creating a lot of dust. Bottom line these rustlers hit them fast slaughtered all the father's, friends, sons and what the rustlers didn't murder the cattle were stampeding that just mushed everybody into the hard ground...it is and was terrifying what happened. They thought that everyone was killed but that's not what happened, Marty Durst, the son Gunether Durst survived with an arm wound. He buried all of his dead friends and his father where they laid using his knife. He knew the critters would get them, but he just couldn't leave his father like that...very sad. He made it back to the ranch, but as he approached he knew was wrong. His sister Anna had accompanied the cattle drive as the cook. Marty couldn't locate the wagon so he followed the tracks and came upon his sixteen year old sister next to a tree ravaged by those men, who didn't have the decency to at least leave her cover her...no when they finished thats how they left her..disgraceful...poor Marty buries his sister places rocks on her grave and prays for his sister...all three ranches were the same..death death death. These men who did this later blamed on the Comanches, raiding the farms. This is the LIE that rancher Mayer circulated and for nine years Marty Durst now known as Matt Dunne waited until he set out to get REVENGE for three families and he knew who created all these deaths....Mayer..
Read and it's the usual greedy men who want it all....you know the great empire which is accumulated by all means necessary...step on them, murder rape nothing is to low as long as they get what they want...those ranch hands raped poor Anna and Mayer had daughters who were around her age, no empath what so ever...
They needed the" #Me To" movement these men were indescribably vile, and thats to nice of a description...a wow moment which takes your breath when EVIL takes form.

The Mayer ranch was the biggest in a West texas county that did not even have sheriff at this time. Three am
Mallet ranchers always gave their cattle to the Mayers to drive North on the big cattle drives when beef was a selling for high prices. The Mayers charged the small ranchers $1.00 per cow. This year Mayer wanted $5.00 per cow. The small ranchers could not make a profit and pay the $5.00. Three families decided to make the drive themselves with a combined total of 300 cows. All the males, even 15 year old teenagers went on the drive. 16 year old Anna drive the Chuck wagon and cooked down the men. That first day they made an exhausting give miles but the were in good spirits and working hard. Without out warning, that lets came o it if the dust clouds and killed every one. 16 year old Anna was raped and killed, her naked body just discarded only five miles from home. If course the families left behind of ranch women and small children would never know because they too would soon die and their bodies emulated to appear as if there was an Indian attack. Young Marty Dubst, Anna's 15 year old brother survived. I'm agonizing pain he tried to bury the remains of his family and the other families but he only had a knife for the hard ground. His father lay dead with his Cold Walker still in his holster, shot in the back. Marty walked 70 miles to his Uncle's ranch to tell him what had happened and what he must do. In pain he told his Uncle what he had vowed to do but admitted he was too young to do it well. Marty changed his name to Matt Dunne and with the support of the Box D ranch and the citizens of Clay county he planned for the day that Peter Mayer would receive the justice he promised his family.

Just another C. J. Petit masterpiece that has all a reader can ask for, as far as adventurous endeavors from beginning to end. This is an outstanding true epic of our real old western folklore. Plenty of gunplay with a lot of romancing and family-friendly excitement from beginning to end.

Never read a Petit book that wasn't a five star enterprise and this is one of his most endearing romantic releases, which only gets better with each new episode. The storylines were well thought out and unlike some westerns, it is difficult to anticipate what will occur and when. Too, as always, Mr. Petit did a magnificent job with his extraordinary character selection.
There was a lot of great research went into this excellent portrayal of our real old western folklore and the ongoing action is unsurpassed. A very wholesome western adventure with plenty of exciting lowdown infighting that will keep you glued from beginning to end!

Definitely recommend this book, and all C. J. Petit novels, to real lovers of magnificent recollection of realistic western adventures. Some of us are speed readers but not Petit's descriptive adds of real American folklore. Do yourselves a favor and read this outstanding western adventure!😂

RETRIBUTION, ADOPTION, LOVE

5 STARS for Matt Dunn an excellent Old West Era storyline that is action packed. Human emotions are wonderfully exposed from extreme cruelty & greed portraying what evil crimes such as murder, rape, rustling of herds of cattle & Chuck wagon to the tortured mutilation of women & children left at 3 homesteads while their husbands, eldest sons, & son-in-laws jointly were accompanying the herd to market. They didn't make it except Marty, by a miracle and this is his valiant story of retribution. It's a loving tale that shows his humanity, even though he has every right to be a negative person. Marty's conscious still bothers him going after the evil doers shows the kind of man he is vs the men who had attacked his family as a boy when he goes up against them. Jenny who started loving Marty at 10yrs old and stood by him when she discovered the horrible awful that it had been her Father who had led all the outrageous destruction of the 3 families 9 years before & her brothers & ranch hands involved she stood by him. Great characters & landscape. I recommend.

For the most part I like Petit's stories. A couple have been less enjoyable but I think this is back to vintage Petit. Not the great American novel, never will be required for English class reading but if you are looking for an escape on a rainy afternoon or flying from here to wherever includes a long trip, then this is the type of book for you.
Petit's stories remind me of L'Amour's Sackett series except he has only one carry over character from one book to another and it's not this one. Good guy finds trouble, overcomes trouble, falls for fair damsel and let's all clap for a happy ending. If you like post Civil War era western novels then give this a shot. Remember the price you paid because you will probably find some errors that a good editor would have found and corrected but blink and they are gone.

Matt escaped to his uncles farm where he grew into maturity as a deputy. Returning to wreck vengeance on the Taylor men and ranch hands who had killed his family and raped and killed his sister. This is fast moving story as Matt begins his vengeance and meets Missy. The Taylor's realize that Matt is seeking vengeance and attempt an all out war which left the left them dead. Taylor begs for his life as his family is killed and his ranch is overrun.

Matt and Missy find love and stand off her family as they grow closer to one another. Matt takes Missy and her mother to Matt's adopted home as others manage the Taylor ranch.

another story in which the moral protagonist falls in love and marries the rescued woman.

Not his best.

I've been a long time fan of Petit ' s books since I came across his first one and check two or three times a day every two weeks looking for his latest. This last one was full violence .that seemed like the only plot. The romance seemed too quick to be believable. I did like his horses. It reminded me of Virgil 's herd.lots of small parts were pure Petit. Seems to me that this story is week just one good guy killing everyone in sifgt. Even the high powered rifle has a minor part, and the villain had it. All told, I am disappointed, but can't wait another two weeks for the next one.

Matt Dunne

Matt had literally lived through the most horrific situation that any fifteen year old boy should ever have to live through. It was no wonder the he lived his life preparing to wage war, at some time in the future. However, life and fate are fickle things to deal with, even the best of plans can be changed in a heartbeat. CJP has again put together another great read for anyone that really loves a western that involves love, loss, and revenge. BRAVO 👏👏Absolutely!!!BRAVO 👏BRAVO 👏

There is too much promotion of guns in this book as well as author's other books. Maybe most of the readers in this genre seek this element, but it is not of my taste. Other than those that, the book is well presented. Multiplied point of views even from secondary characters, suspense and drama from the beginning, sympathizing protagonists, a magnificent romantic plot, and good writing style that travels you right there in the setting! Truly, the story is magnificent, completely different from his previous book Conn Jackson, as if it’s not the same writer.

Marty durst was amazed he wasn't trampled by all the cattle

He walked across two counties to his uncle's place and it took him a couple of days but he got there. Ian Dunne spotted him and he and his foreman went to check out what was going on and found out that everyone was murdered of three families and all their cattle stolen by the triple m rolling King ranch. Marty became Matt DUNNE and spent the next 9 years learning everything he could to defend himself and to get good at catching bad men. He wanted revenge on the Rocking M ranch.

I have read several CJ Petit books starting with the Joe Beck series I find them pretty entertaining. However the characters superhuman eyesight is unbelievable such as seeing five riders horseback at a distance of five miles. I don't think a person with 20 20 vision could see a Mack truck with a sixty foot trailer at five miles. Also bending a colt pistols barrel by hitting it with an iron fireplace poker little bit beyond belief. Other than that somewhat entertaining. Stories are kinda drawn out also

A Western With a Deadly Beginning and Revenge At The End

CJP. has. penned another western that has been enjoyable to read. The beginning is very deadly for three small rancher families when they attempt to do steal drive by themselves. A land grabber rancher steals the cattle and murders three families except for a young boy who grows up planning revenge for the three families. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

A little on the dark side

Again I must admit CJ Petit is one of my favorite authors. Right of the start this book starts with killing and the dark ugliness of some people brought on by greed. Then just when you think it's safe and you start getting really confident one of the characters comes back to avenge the murder of not only his family but the other families also. So without giving anymore of the story away grab the book and start reading you'll find it hard to put down.

Another excellent book

This was the author that made me start reading westerns again, and I enjoyed each of his books. I hope there are many more to come and cannot wait for the next one after finishing reading the last one. After reading Mr Petit’s first book I went back and started reading all of my old and classic favorites, like all the
L'Amour Westerns etc.

It Was Slow but Finial

Has horrid as this novel started the ending was a complete finish. The story is well written with twists and turns as all C.J. Petit novels are. The characters are well developed with good guys and girls and very evil bad guys! Again Mr. Petit has hit a homerun in a story of how the West was really won!

Excellent. If you enjoy reading Western novels you'll enjoy this one.

C.J. Petit is a author in league with my favorite of all times Zane Grey. I enjoy every book that he writes. This one didn't disappoint me. It is fast paced, a page turner. Five stars is not enough, but that's all that was offered. Thank you Mr. Petit.

Hmm? The Best?

Having read a number of C. J. Petit books and being a new writer my self l have enjoyed each one. He weaves a story with twists and turns and holds true to the code of the West. The hero's are honorable the villains are dastardly the women are beautiful and the horses brave and smart also well liked. This is one of his best. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Good read

An eleven year old boy wakes and to find his whole family and neighbors are dead. The group of men and boys had been on a cattle drive. Matt walks 70 miles to his uncle's ranch, where he grows up and prepares to take revenge on the murderers. Lots of action. Happy ending.

Great story

This was a great story C.J., I was kept on edge all the way through, Matt was a fantastic guy, liked the ending. Of course that's a lot of kids, all you get to do is change diapers,🤗 guess with their money they could have a lot of nannies. Glad we are out of the lawyer field, that was boring.😡😩

If your working take a day off

You will have a hard time sitting this down. I mean don't drink and read because you may find yourself carrying this story with you. Don't try to figure out what's happening next. More twists and turns than a switchback trail.

Another great read by C.J. Petit. I have yet to read a mediocre book by him. I was never much of a western book reader, but Mr. Petit has turned my insight around.
Thank you and please keep up the great work.
