Rate this book
Emma Lapp tries to be the perfect daughter, to earn the loving embrace of her family and her Amish community in Pennsylvania. Yet she can’t quite win her mother’s smile—or her forgiveness for a transgression Emma can’t quite place . . .

Emma knows she’s the source of her mother’s greatest sorrow, having been born on the same day Mamm lost her beloved sister. The one bright spot has been the odd trinkets anonymously left at her aunt’s grave each year on Emma’s birthday—gifts Emma secretly hides because they upset her parents. But the day she turns 22, a locket bears a surprise that sends her on an unexpected journey . . .

Searching for answers, Emma travels to the English world and finds a kinship as intriguing as it is forbidden.  But is this newfound connection enough to leave behind the future she’d expected? The answers are as mysterious, and as devastating, as the truth that divides Emma from the only family, and the only life, she’s ever known . . .

Aka Elizabeth Lynn Casey.

While spending a rainy afternoon at a friend's house nearly forty years ago, Laura Bradford fell in love with writing over a stack of blank paper, a box of crayons, and a freshly sharpened number two pencil.

Those early attempts at the craft had her writing and illustrating stories for young children. Wise beyond her years, Laura saved her first writing attempt in a hand decorated shoe box (complete with sparkly stickers) and moved on to her next idea. Her second book—O’Casey’s Wish—was so utterly brilliant, she sent it off to a well-known New York publishing house at the tender age of ten, confident she was on the verge of becoming the next Don Freeman (Corduroy) or Shel Silverstein (Giving Tree).

Months later, she received her first form letter rejection.

While she wasn’t of the mindset to save that first crushing blow for posterity, Laura did save the original copy of this particular literary masterpiece in the event the letter was a mistake.

Desperate to prove her flexibility as a writer, Laura soon found herself dabbling in jokes (for her Girl Scout troop’s newsletter), stories of angst (a somewhat autobiographical look at her teenage years), movie reviews (for the Xavier University Newswire), and countless news and feature articles (for newspapers in CT, SC, TN, and MO).

It wasn’t until Laura was home raising children of her own though, that she was finally able to dust off that rainy day dream and bring it back to its original form—writing fiction. Today, she is a bestselling mystery author with Berkley Prime Crime (Penguin Publishing), and an award winning romance author with Harlequin American. She lives in New York with her family.

Oh, and if you meet Laura at a book event in the future, ask her about O’Casey’s Wish. It tends to travel with her everywhere she goes.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Laura Bradford introduces us to Emma Lapp, a 22-year-old Amish woman whose whole life gets turned upside down. The oldest of six children, Emma’s birthday has always had a somber tone. Emma was born the same day her Aunt Ruby died. Emma’s mother mourns her sister’s death heavily. Losing a loved one takes a toll and Emma does her best to be sensitive to her mother’s feelings. But the woman’s attitude toward Emma has never been the same as her attitude toward the other children. Emma works so hard but nothing she does can bring a smile to her mother’s face the way the other children do.

Each year Emma’s birthday begins with a trip to the cemetery. Each year when they arrive there is a small gift left by someone on the grave. It makes her mother sad and her father angry. The gift is quickly tossed in the trash. When Emma turns 7 and every year after she wakes early to go to the cemetery by herself to take the gift and hide it away, both to ease her parent’s pain and because the trinkets bring her a little bit of joy. On the morning of her 22nd birthday, she finds a very special gift, a locket with a picture inside that has her questioning everything about her life. Her need to find answers takes her to forbidden places. The answers she finds are surprising and could come with a very high price. Her life could change in profound ways.

Like her story, A Portrait of a Sister, Ms. Bradford takes her readers and her characters on an emotional roller coaster. Emma’s struggle was real and affected so many people. My emotions clearly mirrored Emma’s. While Emma has led a sheltered life and was only educated through the 8th grade, we see a very determined, strong, and smart woman emerge as the story continues. She learns so much and gets some great advice to help her to make some hard decisions.

Again, you can see that the author has researched the ways of the Amish to paint a very rich detailed story for her readers. The story is so well written. The characters are portrayed realistically and the dialogue flows easily. From the hiding place in a tree to a new litter of kittens in the barn, from Emma’s special rock by the pond to the long country road she travels, I could easily picture everything. A bird’s eye view of Emma’s journey is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. There is also a poignant lesson taught by the end of this novel. Something everyone should take to heart.

I loved this story and escaped right into it! The author has a way of making her readers truly care about her characters. I was invested in Emma’s Life from beginning to end. She is also a character I wouldn’t mind visiting again. The author leaves us in a great place but Emma has a lot more life ahead of her.

Like the first one, this story is a story that will stick with me. Also, like the one before, the book receives my Paradise Rating earning a spot on my Best Reads List for this year.

Fans of Amish fiction will love this story. If you are a fan of this author’s Amish Mystery series you really need to cross over and read this book and the one before it.

“She wasn’t sure what response she’d been expecting… Whatever it was, though, it hadn’t been this weighted silence that hung in the air like an impending storm.”

I was completely captivated by A Daughter’s Truth from the first sentence to the last. The author’s pitch perfect writing voice weaves words, characters, and settings beautifully into a story that hits you in all the feels.

The plot is straightforward enough but the emotions behind it are truly complex, and Bradford presents them all tenderly and with gentle insight. Emma’s story is multi-layered and, since an easy solution doesn’t exist in this case, you will quickly become deeply invested in this character and how her looming decisions will play out on the page. There’s a lot more I want to say about Emma, her history, and her future but I’m trying to be careful not to spoil the story for you.

I will say that the trinkets left on Ruby’s grave every year on Emma’s birthday drew me to this story in the first place (along with the fact that I will read pretty much anything that Laura Bradford writes). The trinkets in and of themselves brought out my inner Nancy Drew, and as this part of the story came into sharper focus, I drank in the explanations for each one right along with Emma.

Speaking of Emma, I just loved her. She is genuinely likable with a steady spirit but a lifetime of insecurities she struggles to overcome. That steady spirit is challenged from nearly every direction in A Daughter’s Truth, though, and your emotions will take the ride along with her. You’ll be cheering her on from the sidelines in the joyous moments, and your heart will break right along with hers as everything she knew is turned upside down. I also loved Miss Lottie and Levi and the support & advice they gave her during the story, staying faithfully by her side and being her rock more than once.

Bottom Line: Make sure you’ve carved out however much time you need to read A Daughter’s Truth in one sitting because you won’t want to put it down once you become immersed in the complexities of Emma’s plight. There is no ‘quick fix’ or ‘pat answer’ to be had here, and I confess that – with about 20 minutes left in the book (per my reading speed) - I became a bit concerned at how the author would tie it all up without becoming trite. I needn’t have worried – the resolution was as layered and healing as the situation itself. The themes of family (the kind we are born into and the kind we make ourselves), forgiveness (of the deepest kind of hurt & betrayal), and belonging (by embracing what makes us who we are at our core) touched my heart more than once and make this a must-read for everyone, even if you’re not a fan of Amish fiction & especially if you are.

I absolutely loved this book from the first sentence to the last!! Ms Bradford painted such a beautiful and entrancing story of love, loss, and family, set in the lovely Amish countryside of eastern Pennsylvania. While reading this book, I was lost in the smell of the barn, the fields, newborn kittens & the cold frosty air of late Winter. Oh yes, and oatmeal cookies!! ;) When a book is good, I get lost.. and I was lost. I experienced an emotional rollercoaster right along with the main character, 22 yr old Emma. Since this book has not been released yet (Thank you Laura for the ARC) I won't divulge the storyline. I will say tho that Emma's Amish life is turned topsy-turvy on her 22nd birthday. Lies, truths, heartaches, and new love are some of the things that Emma has to sort through in her heart & mind. In my opinion, this book would make a fantastically good Hallmark movie!! :)

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to read A Daughter's Truth by a new-to-me author -- Laura Bradford. And I found it to be a great story.

This author has written several books in the mystery category but has just recently branched into Amish-based women's fiction. I can't speak for her previous works, but this new genre seems to be an outstanding choice for her. The story's conflict takes place between the Amish and English worlds. The characters from both worlds and their stories are very well developed as they work to the resolution of the struggle by . . . well, any more would be a spoiler!

If you are a fan of well-written Amish fiction, you should find lots to enjoy in A Daughter's Truth. The story is filled with elements, though, that are easily relatable to readers with a variety of interests. I encourage you to go ahead and pre-order this book (releasing in late May) and then follow me to find Laura Bradford's first Amish-based book, Portrait of a Sister.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an advance copy of the book. I am happy to share my honest thoughts in this review.

What can I say ? That it was worth every moment I spent reading A Daughter's Truth. It bought me to tears. It took me through a whole range of emotions. Anger for the lies that Brad and Emma had both been told. Sadness that a father never got to see his only daughter grow up to be a young lady. Confusion as to why Emma Lap never knew who she really was. Why she was never really excepted by her Amish school scholars and later at the singings when she never got invited to ride home with a young Amish boy. Why her mamm never smiled at her and her Dat held her at arms length. Why her best never seemed to be good enough.
This story captured me immediately and held me to the last page. It's a different kind of Amish story . Unpredictable with an element of mystery. I could go on and on here but don't want to be a spoiler. I can't recommend enough that you read this book. It's definitely one you won't forget too soon.
All fans of Laura Bradford, Amish Fiction and Christian Fiction will enjoy this book.

Let me start with Wow. A Daughter's Truth grabbed me from the start and kept me turning the pages. Emma Lapp discovers a secret that turns her life upside down. The emotions she goes through you feel along with her. The best thing with this book is that not only do you feel Emma's emotions of heartbreak, anger, and frustration, but it gives you the ripple effect of all the lives that are touched, who all is affected, all the different views and emotions. I found myself thinking many times, that " I would never have thought about it affecting this person." Beautifully written and I loved how it all tied up in the end.

I've been a fan of Ms. Bradford's Amish books for several years now, and A Daughter's Truth is an excellent addition to the library. In her second foray into women's fiction, Bradford once again takes the reader deep into the world of the Amish. It was fun to see some familiar characters and locations from her last novel, Portrait of a Sister, but this story is not a sequel and isn't connected to the first book. This book tells the story of Emma, a young Amish woman with a difficult choice to make; one that could change her life and the lives of her family forever.

A discovery made on her 22nd birthday flips Emma's world upside down and makes her question everything that's happened since the day she was born. She begins asking questions and trying to solve a puzzle that is much more complex than she could have ever imagined. She seeks counsel from her best friend Mary as well as a lovely English woman named Miss Lottie, who we met in Bradford's first women's fiction novel. I loved seeing Emma's relationship with Mary and appreciated the patience and wisdom of Miss Lottie, who was raised Amish but chose not to be baptized. I also didn't mind the subtle love story woven through the chapters.

Bradford does an excellent job of showing the Amish world to her readers. I have learned many things from her books and this one was no exception. Her research into the Amish traditions and customs is evident. This story let her show the stark contrast between the Amish and English worlds, from the clothing to the language used to the way each lives their lives. There is beauty in the simplicity of the Amish way of life, which Bradford depicts wonderfully. I appreciated Emma's exploration of the English world and her thoughts about various aspects of it. I also appreciated the rollercoaster of emotions Bradford allowed her to express, something I don't believe is a typical part of the Amish lifestyle.

As a fan of Bradford's Amish cozy mystery series, I enjoyed the intrigue this story provided, and I honestly wasn't sure what decision Emma was going to make or what I thought was the best way to go. I second-guessed everything right along with her and shed a few sympathetic tears along the way as well.

If you like stories about human relationships - not just romantic ones, but friendships and familial bonds - then this story is for you. If you like a good intrigue that takes a few twists and turns along the way, then this story is for you, too. It's got a little bit of everything. I will warn you though, it will definitely leave you craving oatmeal cookies and pie.

One final note: There is a nice reader's guide at the end that can be used in book clubs or even just for yourself.

A Daughter's Truth is a very emotional packed story written by Laura Bradford. This story is definitely heartwrenching, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all wrapped up in one. The author has done a remarkable job taking her readers on this journey with her main character Emma Lapp.

The characters are truely amazing and likeable. Each character has an amazing role throughout this story. Emma Lapp, a young Amish woman, never felt like she truely fit in her family or the Amish community. When Emma finds an outlandish gift left on her aunt's gravesite she is full of questions. This gift starts Emma on a very emotional journey and the demise of her life as she has known it. Emma starts questioning everything and everyone in her life and tries to stay true to who she has always been. The author has done an amazing job telling this story of loss, love, family, truth, and faith.

I was given the opportunity to read this fantastic story in advance of its release through Netgalley and Laura Bradford. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Laura Bradford for writing another outstanding story involving the Amish. This story is very different from most Amish books and I was drawn into this story from the first few pages and remained intensely involved to the end.

I’m not sure I can effectively put my thoughts of this book into the right words. I surely don’t want to post any spoilers.
The emotional pull of this story kept me reading well past my bed time. Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong, that something was wrong with you? What if you found out that you were right? That everything you knew for 22 years was mostly a lie? Would you have someone to turn to?
Imagine being Amish and not having the same kind of support systems we do.

Laura Bradford made this story very real, with vivid scenery, heartbreaking emotions and then waited til the very end to tie everything up with a great ending that will leave you feeling happy, fulfilled and even content.

Amazing read!!!
If you want a book that will draw you in and keep you turning pages this book is the book for you.
You will feel the love and pain of the characters, as if you are right there with them.
So, if you read one book, this book is the one I would highly recommend!!!
The only drawback was I didn't want it to end!!!
Can't wait for the next book in this series.

Review:

Wow, what a great book. I was drawn in from the first page and I could not read this book fast enough. There was heartache, happiness, tension, worry and everything in-between.

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Emma is a strong woman but she has never felt like she fit in anywhere. When she finds out the truth about her beginnings, she knows why. She has a lot of decisions to make, and she will need all of that strength to make them. I thought the secondary characters added a lot to the story and brought friendship and love. I cared about each of the characters and what would happen to them. I think that is the sign of a great author.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster as I read it. I felt for Emma and wanted things to work out for her. I found myself laughing, worrying, getting mad and letting out the breath I did not even realize I was holding.

The author is very talented in portraying the Amish and I learn a little more about them with every book I read. I am fascinated by the way the Amish and Englisher worlds are so different and the author portrays these differences very well. But there are also areas where the two worlds are more similar and those were explored as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted women’s contemporary. This book is both heartbreaking and heartwarming, both sad and happy, both somber and funny. Grab your copy and enjoy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

This is my first book I read from this Author and I totally enjoyed. It is the story of Emma Lapp. She always felt that there was something not right in her family. Her Mother and family never really celebrated her birthday like her siblings. This is the day her mothers sister died. This day every year made her mother sad. They always visited the grave site and dad would take things off the grave and toss them. When she became 7 she would go to the grave before she went to school and take the item and hide it. It is a beautiful story of a secret her parents hid from her. It is a story of forgiveness and finding the truth about herself. I thought this was a well written book it kept you wondering about the secret. I will read other books from this Author. Thank You for introducing me to a new Author.

The author has given us a story about a young Amish woman whom has always felt out of place in her family. Just like in all families with more than one child, sometimes you feel that one is favored more than others, but is it real or imagined?
Then on top of everything we soon find out that there have been deep family secrets kept here.
I soon wondered if everything I was reading or feeling was what really happened? Yes, all answers are here, and some are a bit scary when you think of an Amish family ending up in jail, but you will need to read right to the end to find out all of the facts and what happens to these folks.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review

Laura. BRadford writes such comfortable, easy books. I love the Amish settings she chooses. A Daughter's Truth introduces Emma, who has always felt out of place. One day Emma discovers the truth about her heritage and turmoil ensues. She spends much of the story angry and resentful, while being pressured by her birth father to abandon her culture. Levi, a love interest, exhibits the utmost patience while waiting for Emma to decide. The ending is rather cliche, but it is appropriate. I love the cover too. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read.

A Daughter’s Truth by Laura Bradford is about finding your place in life. Emma Lapp is twenty-two years old today, and she is beginning the day as she has since she was seven years old. She heads to the nearby cemetery to the grave of her deceased aunt, Ruby. Emma’s birthday has been a day of sorrow for her mother and it is not celebrated like that of her siblings since Ruby died on the same day. The one joy Emma derives from her birthday is seeing what trinket has been deposited at Ruby’s gravesite. Every year someone has left an item. This year she finds a beautiful gold locket which sends Emma on a journey into the English world to find answers. Emma is shocked by what she learns, and it changes her entire world. She is not sure where she fits in any longer and Emma seeks guidance from her friends and Miss Lottie.

A Daughter’s Truth is an intriguing new Amish novel by Laura Bradford. Emma Lapp feels that she is treated differently from her siblings and her birthday has always been one of sorrow. On her twenty-second birthday, she discovers a clue that sends her on a search for answers. I thought A Daughter’s Truth was well-written with realistic characters. Emma has always tried to be a people pleaser, but this discovery changes her. I liked how she sets out to find the truth. Emma has a good friend in Mary Fisher who provided a different perspective for Emma. Miss Lottie returns in this story and she provides Emma with a listening ear plus good advice. It is always important to remember that there are two sides to every story. Each individual sees things in a different way as we discover in A Daughter’s Truth. I do wish the book had a quicker pace because I found it a little slow for my tastes. Laura Bradford provides good descriptions to allow readers to visualize the scenes. It was apparent that the author did her research into Amish life, traditions and customs. I could feel the character’s emotions especially Emma’s. It was an emotional time for all involved (I am being vague on purpose. I do not want to spoil the story for you). My favorite phrase from the book is “you should always be you”. A Daughter’s Truth is about the search for the truth, familial relationships and being true to oneself.

This touching story is filled with tough and tender moments from the very beginning. From the first chapter where we are introduced to Emma Lapp on her 22nd birthday, to the end of the story, Ms. Bradford takes on a heart-felt journey through a young Amish girl’s life. Emma has always felt as if she didn’t belong. Not a home, school, or church. She longs for answers, hoping to find the truth to what happened 22 years ago on her birthday. The day has always been a painful one in her household.

As we travel Emma’s journey, we are caught up with the decisions she makes and how they may affect her family. As a young adult, she must find her way to answer the truths to the questions she has had since long ago. On the fateful day of her birthday, she finds a locket placed on her aunt’s grave. Presents, left over the course of the last seven years, have always been the one bright spot of that day. This begins her journey for the truth that will take her to a nearby English town to find her answers.

This story was so compelling that I wanted to read it in one sitting. The emotions evoked while reading, tugged at my heart. I felt close to Emma during this journey and smiled and cried at various moments. A complex story with complex emotions. The family ties and loyalty all come into play as well as trust and independence. A women’s fiction novel that you will hold close to your heart.

This book was not the type of book I normally would read. I typically read cozy mysteries and don’t stray from that genre; however, I really enjoy this author and the book looked intriguing, so I took a chance. I have to say that I am glad I did because I absolutely loved it!!!! Throughout the entire book, you could really feel the pain and struggle that Emma was going through. It really made you able to connect with the character. I love learning more about the Amish way and this book gave you a glimpse into that. The struggle between the English way and the Amish way was evident. I cannot wait to read more of these books by Laura Bradford. I highly recommend this book and consider it a must-read!

A Daughter’s Truth is a fascinating story even though there were a wide range of emotions and tears flowing. Emma Lapp always felt like a misfit with her family and community. On her 22nd birthday her world was turned upside down.

Laura Bradford’s beautifully scripted this story with compassion and gentleness that could easily be reality for someone in Emma’s situation when secrets are kept hidden. There are multiple layers to this story as Emma discovered answers and had to make some hard choices for her future. This is one book that readers will want to set time aside to read in one sitting.

I borrowed this book from our library, thus a review was not required. I have expressed my own opinion.

I read this book in 2 days, it was hard to put it down. Laura Bradford had me from the first page. I've read a lot of Amish books, but this was by far my favorite. Emma struggled with some real issues surrounding the circumstances of her birth. I felt that it was told in a way that a real young woman would struggle when certain truths were revealed, it was not sugar coated at all. I look forward to reading more of this talented authors books!

Wow, I read this story in two days. I loved Emma's story. Her growth is amazing and with a little help from some friends she finds her way. This story is highly unique for an Amish story. It is a Women's fiction so don't expect a huge romance. I wish there were more to that side but that's not women's fiction.

I highly recommend this story to anyone who loves Amish stories and Women's Fiction!

A Daughter’s Truth is the first book I have read by Laura Bradford. This book drew me in from the start and was very hard to put down. Emma Lapp who is Amish makes a discovery that has her questioning everyone and everything about her life. Heartache, lies, love, truth all lead Emma on an emotional roller coaster journey about finding out who she really is.
I loved this book!

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions are my own.

Emma Lapp, oldest daughter of an Amish family, has never quite felt like she fits in the life she was born into. At the age of 22, she discovers that there is a very good reason for this feeling. Emma spends most of the book trying to understand the meaning of where and what your home really is.
I loved this book!! It is a story of deception, choices and finding your home. One of the best books I have read in quite a while.

Really enjoyed following along with Emma's discovery of who she was and then as she took the time to learn more about who she was. Without giving anything away, I was happy with the decision that she made in the end.

This was outstanding! I loved Emma right from the start. The heart of this is fantastic - the emotions for each beat of the story were beautifully conveyed in their complexity and depth. And the ending was an absolutely perfect wrap up to everything that happened. I loved this!
