Excerpt from The Romance of His Life, and Other Romances
For aught I know to the contrary there may be other habitable dwellings in that beloved country of grey skies and tidal rivers, and cool sea breezes. There certainly are other houses in our own village, some larger, some smaller than mine, where pleasant neighbours manage to eat and Sleep, and to eke out their existence. But, of course, though they try to hide it, they must all be consumed with envy of me, for a cottage to equal mine I have never yet come across, nor do I believe in its existence.
The daughter of the vicar at St Luke's Church in the village of Hodnet, Market Drayton, Shropshire, England, where she was born, Cholmondeley spent much of the first thirty years of her life taking care of her sickly mother.

This anthology was published in 1921 by Mary Cholmondeley. She is better known for her novel "Red Pottage." There are eight unrelated shorts in this book. I'll admit I didn't care for most of them. The best part is actually the forward. Cholmondeley tells us of the cottage she lives in and a memorable experience she had during a war. Quite beautifully done. I wish an entire novel had been written on those subjects. It reminded me of Elizabeth Von Armin's "Elizabeth and Her German Garden." But unfortunately the short stories were not anywhere near as good as the opening pages. If anything, download this title and just read those. Three stars for the intro - two stars for the shorts.
