Sweet Briar Rose

Rose was once a barefoot dreamer, carving whimsical creatures from the driftwood she found on the beach. However, after the death of her father, Rose finds herself cut adrift. So she answers an advertisement to become the bride of a blacksmith in Sweet Briar, Colorado, bravely leaving behind the coast of Maine and her beloved sandy beaches.

It was eerily quiet now in Emmett's kitchen alone, with just the snapping of the fire.
Rose strained to hear the sounds of Emmett and his burly dog, Boston, as they left to go downstairs and outside through the front entrance to Emmett's shop. She heard the creak of the door to the stairwell opening and closing again, and the sounds of them climbing down the stairs. And then nothing. She pictured Emmett lacing his boots and putting on his coat. She pictured Boston too, standing beside him, the long brown plume of his tail swaying, awaiting his own morning ritual.
It was impossible to sit still, simply waiting, a sense of foreboding gathering around her. If anything happened to them, she'd well and truly be alone.
And then she heard it, a crash like a thousand pounds falling. She didn't know what it was, but leapt to her feet and scrambled down the stairs after them.
On the final step, she stopped. Emmett and Boston stood before the open door. Snow had spilled in around their feet. Thin swirls drifted across the floor and settled. More snow was piled high in the doorway, all the way to the top. Not only snow, a wall of ice.
"What happened?" She stood on the last stair, gripping the handrail.
Emmett turned his head toward her, as if startled by the sound of her voice. He brushed snow from his coat and quickly shut the door against the cold. His leather hat lay on the floor at his feet. It too was covered in snow.
"What happened?" she repeated, frightened by the look on his face. He looked so grim. Had he been hurt? She tucked her robe more tightly about her. It felt too thin, not nearly enough to keep her warm. Her teeth began to chatter.
"A sheet of ice. Up on the roof. It must have formed overnight. All that icy snow... I just opened the door and it broke free." He said it so matter-of-factly. Despite his grim expression, it didn't seem as if he was nearly as concerned as he should have been.
"And it fell in the doorway?" she pressed. At his calm nod, she blurted out, "You could have been crushed--you and Boston."
Did he not see that they could have been severely injured, that they could have died?
She swallowed and asked, "Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm not hurt. And thankfully Boston didn't push out ahead of me, like he usually does." For one brief instant, a sickly expression crossed Emmett's face. He did realize they could have been crushed. That Boston might've been killed if he'd rushed out the door first. Emmett reached down to ruffle the dog's neck fur. Boston simply sat there with his eye on the door, perhaps waiting for his master to open it again, not understanding they were quite literally snowed in.

I love a good mail-order bride story, and this one delivered! I loved the contrast between Rose and Emmett- she is numb from grief, he has already given away his heart to her. Her emotions are slowly awakened as she learns to trust and love Emmett in a new and very different part of the country. Emmett was pretty awesome- a true romantic inside a burly blacksmith, I loved how he was such a gentleman to Rose and also appreciated her individuality. Their romance is sweet with chemistry that had plenty of sparks ;) While the story felt a little too-good-to-be-true, that same quality contributed to the fairy tale feel. Both settings- the east coast and the snowy mountains of Colorado, were very much a part of the story and they were easy to picture. I'm happy to have discovered a new-to-me author that I enjoy and look forward to reading more!

This was a short and sweet romance. I found the characters quite charming and sincere. Mail-order brides and convenient-to-love matches are my favourite tropes in western novels.

The bio for Lena Goldfinch describes her books as having a taste of “sigh-worthy romance”. Sweet Briar Rose most certainly fits this description. Who doesn’t love the thought of a helplessly romantic man? Certainly not me! Emmett was such a fun contradiction, being a blacksmith and a tender-hearted gentleman.
A big conflict in the story was a lack of communication, which was rather ironic because both Rose and Emmett thought they were sharing their thoughts. Nevertheless, as with all relationships, communication goes so much beyond just answering questions and saying what is currently on your mind, and Rose and Emmett needed some lessons in this area.
The story was very touching and sweet. I strongly recommend it (and all of the other books by this author!)
Emmet’s thoughts (Quote from the book)
And so, from the first, Emmett had looked at Rose and fallen instantly in love. Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest thing, to give his heart so completely to a woman he’d only seen once, and that just an image of her. A single moment in time captured on glossy paper. But there was something about her. Some immediate and instinctual connection to her. To her spirit and heart. There was a sweetness of expression, a goodness about her that surely couldn’t be faked. From the demure way she folded her hands on back of the wing chair the photographer had used as a prop. To the graceful curve of her cheek and neck.

In all honesty, she wouldn’t have come at all if her decision had been based solely on that single blurred photograph. She had no reason to suspect Emmett was anything other than a “decent, hardworking man of means,” as his ad had claimed he was. He looked…clean. He’d had good posture. That much she could discern. But it was his letters that had convinced her. He’d won her over with words. His intelligence plain in every stroke of his boldly formed script. He was obviously a man of faith, of sensitivity and honor. Traits that hadn’t quite shone through in his photograph. But then, what did his appearance matter? Their union would be one of practical necessity, not any finer emotions such as love.

As I corresponded with the author for her Songs of Salvation post, we discussed this story and she gave me this additional insight into the writing of the book:
I’m so glad you enjoyed Sweet Briar Rose! The title actually came later in the process (I often work with a boring vanilla placeholder title like “Rose and Emmett” until the final title crystallizes), but Rose’s name was in there from early on. Her name didn’t tip me off about the Sleeping Beauty theme until well into the book. I later made the name of the town Sweet Briar, Colorado, once I realized, and changed the title.
Funny about the kiss. I had a little voice in my head while I was writing that kept saying “It’s all about the kiss.” And I wasn’t entirely sure what that was about either! I love the scene where Emmett -hiding spoiler material- Sigh. I am such a hopeless romantic!
I would love to tell you what she said before that last sentence, but it would mean giving you a spoiler, and we all know that spoilers are bad! You’ll just have to read the book to know.

Sweet Briar Rose set in 1880 by Lena Goldfinch is a delightful read. The story follows Rose who travels from the coast of Maine to Sweet Briar, Colorado after the death of her father to be the mail-order bride of Emmett Southerland. Emmett is the Blacksmith and a hero you cannot help, but fall in love with. He is a dreamer and carries Rose’s picture around with him. Rose is a talented young woman who has been through so much and is unsure of her love for Emmett. I was happily engaged in watching their romance unfold.
I really enjoyed this story. It was sweet and I found myself drawn in by the characters and enjoying my time in Sweet Briar, Colorado. The author did a great job with romantic tension and writing a believable story. I would highly recommend this book and feel you will not be disappointed when you read it. I was given a copy of this book, but not required to write a review.

Sweet Briar Rose is the newest book by Lena Goldfinch. It is a sweet western winter romance that while not Christian fiction it is a relativity clean read. This western romance has a bit ofSleeping Beauty feel with a western twist. Which I loved despite Sleeping Beauty not being my favorite fairy-tale. What surprised me most was that Emmett Southerland the hero of the novel was that he was the romantic one in the story. Rose is the more practical of the two, but then she has every reason to practical.
In Sweet Briar Rose the ties to Sleeping Beauty are subtle if you’re not careful you almost miss it. The Story flows beautifully and moves at a steady pace. I was able to finish this beautiful story in one sitting. That's the thing with Lena's books you just know that as soon as you pick it up it's going to be beautifully written. Emmett was everything a book hero should be caring, patience, considerate, understanding and handsome. Boston Emmett's dog that immediately takes a liking to Rose was another wonderful touch.
I would recommend Sweet Briar Rose to anyone who likes a sweet historical romance. Keep in mind that it is not Christian fiction but it is a clean read.

I absolutely loved this story! Both Rose and Emmett are too sweet for words. I loved Emmett's romantic side. I loved how he was already in love with Rose and ready start their life when she arrived. Rose was sweet too, yet she had a mind of her own and wasn't afraid to follow her heart and be honest with herself and Emmett. I enjoyed how both Rose and Emmett were dreamers. And even though things didn't always go as they had dreamed, instead of letting that cripple them, they just dreamed more dreams! It was refreshing to read a story that even though the religious overtones were light it was written in a time where men honored women and strove to keep their relationship chaste until they were married. If you love short and sweet reads then this is definitely the story for you!

A short novel, clean and with Christian MCs, that is a fun little ride--if you suspend the inner critic. I enjoyed some parts of the story, but especially in the beginning had a hard time reading due to grammar issues. There were a whole host of sentence fragments which can work if used well, but I felt like a lot just didn't work. Fortunately, that was my main issue with grammar so if you can get past that it'll be fine.
Story wise, I had to suspend my belief a lot. It was cute but starting from her sudden decision to answer a marriage ad there were a number of character choices, thoughts, and actions my mind couldn't justify.
Usually I'd probably rate a short story like this that I'm critiquing a lot as I'm reading it more of a 2.
Honestly, this might be more of a 2.5, but I'm giving it a 3 because, though I was never fully immersed in the story or the characters and their actions, I actually did like all three aspects (story, characters, character choices/actions). I'll readily admit that I tend to rate things more heavily on character choices than actual writing, so it's a bonus here.
While I wasn't particularly impressed with the writing style, the excerpt for another book at the end caught my interest so I probably will read more from this author. We'll see how those go.
If you're on the fence about reading it and you like clean romance, I recommend it. I don't know how long it took me to read, but it was one sitting, definitely under an hour, so you're not going to be wasting too much time if you don't like it, and you'll certainly have fun if you do like it.

When I first started this story, I thought it was going to go through the motions of the typical mail-order bride trope—which is totally fine! There’s a comfort in knowing what to expect from your novels, in reading the same tropes albeit in different permutations, knowing they’ll all end in a happily ever after.
What I appreciated about this novel was how much focus it put on the uneasiness that comes from having to adjust to a new life and new person. By holding a magnifying glass on those emotions, the novel still provided the same comfortable trope while feeling refreshing.
The characters felt so pure and overtly wholesome, religious themes without being preachy. Basically Hallmark Movie values lol. Perfect book for a snowy day.

Rose was a free spirit who loved spending time on the beach collecting driftwood to carve. She was incredibly close with her father and when he passes she decides she has no choice but to accept a mail order bride placement from an ad she read. That leads her to Sweet Briar, Colorado and Emmett Southerland, the local blacksmith. Things at first seem strange between them until they discover they really had fallen in love with each other through initial correspondence. Such a beautiful love story with wonderful characters!

Are you a fan of mail order brides? You will enjoy this novella. Rose has just lost her father and her brother has abandoned her. Emmett Southerland, a bachelor living in Colorado, is in need of a wife.
I so enjoyed watching as Rose and Emmett met and worked through the awkwardness of being strangers to becoming friends. Their relationship is so endearing. They each deserve their happily ever after.
I recommend this novella to those who enjoy clean, historical romance.

Sweet
I couldn’t see the sleeping beauty connection but it was a fun story anyway. I loved that these two were honest, asked questions, and didn’t stew too long in guessing the others feelings.

A sweet love comes out of loss
I enjoyed this sweet love story. Coming out of the depths of grief and loneliness Rose finds love and a return to her art. The sense of humor shown by this author keeps the feeling of darkness and grief from being controlling and away from this love story.
I enjoyed this sweet love story. Coming out of the depths of grief and loneliness Rose finds love and a return to her art. The sense of humor shown by this author keeps the feeling of darkness and grief from being controlling and away from this love story.
