There's war in the northern hemisphere and Alaska is a major theater as it was invaded simultaneously by China and Russia. Brad Stone is the major player and consolidates the US factions while dealing with the enemy, mourning the loss of the wife he believes is dead as well as his own country. This story builds momentum from the first one (Invasion) and is classic in its presentation of men at war and the tools of combat.
OK, so I didn't yet finish it, but that's because it was "borrowed" by a former USMC who hasn't returned it.
I love it when an author narrates their own creation, who knows better how to build the suspense or the anger or whatever is behind the action! ?

I love fast-paced highly intense action and this fits the bill perfectly!
Well-written, great characters, all in all an EXCELLENT story. I loved the first book in the series, Invasion, and this second installment is equally AWESOME!

I was thrilled and chilled from beginning to end - I can't say enough about how great this series is! Get it and get it now :)
You can thank me later ;)

Disclaimer, I received this audiobook from the author for an honest review.

The second book in a trilogy is usually a let down as it is more for story building and prep for the finale. Not so with Insurgent. It was jam packed with action and tension. I actually found myself muttering “no, no, no, don’t do that!” or I was willing things to happen. I look forward to book three.

MWSA Review

Basil Sands’ Ice Hammer: Insurgent picks up where Ice Hammer: Invasion leaves off and is full of solid characters, gritty action, and patriots doing their best at the impossible.

Over a year ago, the combined forces of the Chinese and the Russians invaded the United States, including Alaska, home to former Force Recon Marine Brad Stone. The entire world seems turned upside down, and while fleeing to the Alaskan interior, Brad becomes famous when he kills two Chinese soldiers with an ice hammer. When the incident was caught on a drone, his reputation went viral, and now he is the face of the Alaskan resistance, like it or not.

Book two finds Brad bogged down with trying to keep his ever-growing group of refugees safe and not starving, while his sons, on a Boy Scout camping trip the day the war began, have formed their own resistance group and are learning the rigors of combat at a young age. Brad’s wife, thought dead, is actually leading a very prominent life among the enemy, and at all times seems to be a collaborator, an angel of mercy, and a spy.

That’s a lot of elements for one book, but Sands pulls it off admirably. The action is raw, the dialogue and characters believable, and the twists and turns entertaining. I especially liked how the characters of Karzai and Gunnar get further developed, and also the tie in with Marcus Johnson, another former Marine, from the author’s book 65 Below. If you liked either Ice Hammer: Invasion or 65 Below, then you will love this installment. Sands’ writing, especially when describing combat, is as real as Dale Brown, the great Tom Clancy, or Jeff Edwards.

MWSA's evaluation of this book found a number of technical problems—including some combination of misspellings, grammar, punctuation, or capitalization errors—which indicate that further editing would lead to a much-improved final product.

The major part of Alaska has fallen. The resistance is still active and our patriots Brad, Karzi and the rest of the crew continue the fight. Brad’s sons, Ben and Ian harass the enemy as members of the Scouts militia. Russians have joined the Chinese dividing the state in half as spoils of war. Brad has been videotaped via satellite disposing of two Chinese soldiers with an ice climbing hammer. The video went viral, burdening Brad with the nickname Ice Hammer and public enemy number one by the Chinese. On another front, Brad and Sammi have gotten married. How this situation will shake out in the future is a mystery to me. Young-mi, Brad’s wife believed dead, is definitely alive; living under the roof of, and protected by the Chinese General. I have a feeling that the war will ultimately resolve this issue in a final and possibly painful manner. This is a great story with excellent characters. I look forward to the next volume.
