Sandy *The world could end while I was reading and I would never notice*
EXCERPT: It started with a hashtag.

Well, it started about five years earlier - the first time Billy Ruperts noticed that I'd hit puberty. We were sitting in the hallway, working with a few of our friends on our final history project of Grade seven. He looked at me, then at my chest.

'Savvy, you're growing.' He leaned forward and flicked my pint-sized breast.

That was the first time I felt it. That subtle stomach-churning twirl of rage. I shoved him into the lockers. He split his forehead open on

Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy is a truly inspired anthology of feminist horror. The sixteen stories and poems run the gamut, from short to long, from sly to gory, from snarky to spine-tingling scary. The one thing every last one of these works has in common is that at least one girl, woman, or non-binary person has had it up to their scalps with patriarchal, misogynist BS. Sometimes the protagonists win and sometimes they lose. All of them, however, have some fight in them.

I quite enjoyed this collection of short stories with both feminist and horror themes. I thought it was a really cool take on an anthology; I've read feminist lit collections before, as well as horror anthologies, but the two genres work really, really well together, especially in our current political climate.

There were definitely some stories I enjoyed a bit more than others, but that's the nature of a collection like this. There is a story for everyone in this book, no matter your reading

I would like to start by stating I don’t think I’m the target audience, I’m male and i am pretty old, I would caveat that by saying I don’t think this book should have a “target audience” it should be be read, by everyone, I can see some accusing the book of misandry, i don’t think it is that, it’s not comfortable reason for an old man like me (or any man really) but it is worth reading

The title of this book won me over right away and I had to request it! And I'm glad I did!
This was a really nice collection of short little feminist stories! I loved how they all stuck with the theme and really enjoyed the notes afterward where the authors talked about their influences and authors they liked.

I've got a bunch of new authors to follow now!

Also, the cover art is amazing!

**Thank you to NetGalley and publishers for a free e-copy of Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy in exchange for an honest review.**

I really enjoyed this anthology. It's laid out really nicely; there are long stories, short ones, and even poetry. Some are eerie and some are gruesome. But in all of them, misogyny is encountered and dealt with. As a woman, there were definitely moments in most of the stories I could relate to. If you're looking for a fun yet thought-provoking

"You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever."

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through NetGalley. Trigger warning for misogyny and violence against women, including rape.)

I found out that there was much knowledge that Chira had kept from me. The women of the village knew that a man was necessary for procreation; they just did not see his value for anything else.

Most women didn’t smile. Those that would

Ever since I read The Female of the Species, if you put anything with the words "Mindy McGinnis" and "feminism" in front of me, you can be damn sure I'll want to read it. Because I loved that book and the way it portrays rape culture. So stories to scare the patriarchy, with Mindy's approval? HECK YES.

First, I would like to congratulate the people who worked on the cover because I'm in love with this vintage horror comics look. Kudos, you hit it out of the park.

As to the stories, I'm astounded I

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this anthology in exchange for a honest review! I found this to be a well put together collection of stories where (at their very core) they’re about the power women can have and that’s definitely not something that should be underestimated.

The overall collection is definitely worth looking into. There wasn't a single story I disliked.

Vagina Dentata, By Mindy Mcginnis: 5 Stars, a perfect bite size piece to start off this collection.
You Wake With Him Beside You, By Cori McCarthy: 3 Stars
The Weight Of Iron, By Amanda Sun: 4 Stars, I really loved the mixture of space and sea
imagery.
What She Left Behind, By E.R. Griffin: 5 Stars
After The Foxes Have Their Say, By Tracie Martin: 4 Stars

This was a really well done compilation of feminist short stories and poems. I especially liked that after every story or poem, there was an exert from the author, explaining not only their inspiration and choices for the story/poem but also their feminist reading recommendations, so definitely read this with a notebook and pen so you can write them down!

The stories were a mixture of contemporary, fantasy, historical and sci-fi which was really interesting as each story was different and added a

I wish men knew what it meant for a compliment to feel like a threat.

This may end up high up on my favorite releases of 2019.

Betty Bites Back is an anthology of feminist horror, and anyone that knows me knows that I’m a fan of all things horror, so when I saw ‘feminist’ and ‘horror’ in the same sentence, I clicked that request button faster than you would believe.

In these sixteen short stories there is quite literally something for everyone. Really short stories, longer stories, poetry, gore,

With stories ranging from fantasy to contemporary, this fantastic feminist fiction collection proves that Betty not only bites, but she can also occasionally feast on the tender, soft spots of man. From flash fiction length to poetry to longer stories, this collection has many styles, yet each author perfectly hits the mark on staying true to the theme. While most of the collection wouldn't necessarily scream feminist fiction on its own, the compilation proves to be more than the sum of its ...more

I received an arc of this from netgalley for an honest review.

The beginning of it was interesting enough, but then around 60% through the book I noticed that I didn't enjoy the stories as often. To the point that there was a number of them that I skipped. It's an interesting premise to write an anthology about, and some of the stories were executed well. However I don't think all of them necessarily lived up to it. In my opinion, only about half of them interested me.

This was a great read. First and foremost it was a really well compiled anthology with a good mix of length, tone, narrator voice, and poetry v. prose. The stories were both enjoyable and relevant, looking at modern issues from various lenses. The only thing I would have liked to see is a little more obvious diversity. While the shortness of the pieces means that there were definitely constraints on how much various characters could be shown to be non-white, non-cis, etc. it would have been nice ...more

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy in exchange for an honest review.

Content Warnings: Rape

Like the next person, I love me a good ol’ feminist book. Especially one that rests in the horror genre. Betty Bites Back: Stories to Scare the Patriarchy tells tales of werewolves, ghosts & everything in between; all with a feminist twist. We get insight on different issues women have to deal with: being told to smile more, random

If I could give this book more than five stars , I absolutely would. Short story collections are usually a bit hit and miss for me, I might find one or two stories I loved, a couple that are ok and usually at least one I hate, but this collection did not have a single weak link. This is collection of feminist horror stories ,featuring women who are ready to stand up for themselves and fight back, Within the collection you will find fairy tale retellings, , science fiction , a take on the pulpy ...more

BETTY BITES BACK is one of the books I've felt most proud of reading on the train. It's a fantastic collection of stories with a feminist bite. All of the women in this anthology have been beaten down, humiliated, assaulted, and just demoralized by men, both familiar and strange. Though many of these stories are extraordinary and deal with supernatural elements, there are a lot of very familiar scenarios that women of all ages have suffered through. The stories are terrifying in their ...more

This is a book of stories, some good and some horrible, all with some radical ideas of women. The second story was unreadable. Beyond this, most stories contained vaginas with teeth and other atrocities. I loved the 3rd story. Most others were from okay to OMG, I cannot believe how bad and hateful this is. I love anthologies and I am a woman and support women, but I do not support such hatred and the self-centered push of today's women and many of these stories. To be equal, you cannot become an ...more

I wasn't sure about this anthology at first. The only reason I requested it was for Mindy McGinnis and her story was one of the shortest which was a little disappointing. But I ended up really enjoying it. The stories were fun and often over far too soon for my liking. I really enjoyed the variety of stories. Some were horror, some paranormal, some just plain spooky. I liked the few that were written in verse. Each story sent it's own message, though some of them I thought were a little unclear ...more

A woman wanting to add a ring of teeth to her vagina? What is that!? What does that even mean!?

The next story seemed to be a poem of some sort. Pass.

Okay, these stories were NOT what I thought they’d be. I thought they’d be funny snippets of life. Instead they useless and dumb.
