I love this one. It reminds me a little of mustache baby which was a huge hit with my students. I also like how the mom is the sheriff and the dad is the deputy.

Rodeo Red and her canine pal, Rusty the stuffed dog, are inseparable. Until, that is, the day that Sideswiping Sam - AKA, Rodeo's squalling baby brother - steals the pooch and refuses to return him. Rodeo does everything she can to get her plaything back, but until her Aunt Sal sends her a new plaything, she has nothing with which she can bargain...

The common childhood experience of adjusting to a new sibling and getting into a conflict with them over a plaything is given a western flavor in Rodeo Red, which is author Maripat Perkins' picture-book debut. The language here is inventive and fun, provided one doesn't mind a little dialect and slang, and the artwork by Molly Idle, who was awarded a Caldecott Honor for her Flora and the Flamingo , is colorful and cute. My only real qualm is that I think the mom (I mean Sheriff) is a little unsympathetic in the story, in that she allows the baby to steal Rodeo's boon companion, and makes no effort to set things right. Leaving that aside, this is one I would recommend to anyone looking for entertaining new sibling and/or sibling rivalry stories for younger children.

Silly, rhyming, sweet. Wish this one was just a wee bit shorter so I could resurrect my southern drawl and read it to every kid everywhere all the time without their eyes glazing over. Molly Idle's artwork makes me happier than a dead pig in sunshine.

Red's got a problem. There's a new feller in town that's just makin' her life miserable. He's even gone so far as to steal away her trusty pal. What IS a girl to do when it seems like the whole darned homestead's takin' the side of the new cowpoke?!

I loved this story. As an older sibling, while I wasn't infatuated with cowpokes, I could appreciate the frustrations Red faced with the arrival of her baby brother.

I enjoy Molly Idle and may have to add Perkins to my watch list. This was a fun twist on the new sibling story with a fun little lesson trick at the end.

I'm not sure if the Sheriff's "solution" bugs me or if it really was a solution. Studies show that allowing siblings to problem solve is actually really helpful.

Rodeo Red has already become a favorite at my house! I read it to my daughter and she loved it so much that we had to read it three more times before bedtime. This is one of the cutest children's books I've seen in a long time and I absolutely adore the fact that Rodeo Red is a little girl; a cowgirl. It also helped me teach my daughter a lesson on compromise and how sometimes you have to share with your siblings even if they are stinky and not much fun to play with. Would give it more stars if I could. Loved it!

This story is absolutely adorable. Red and her trusty sidekick, Rusty, are a happy pair until Slim shows up and steals Rusty away. Any child who has had to deal with younger siblings will enjoy this story. Red's failed attempts to get Rusty back will strike a chord, and her success will hopefully encourage kids to seek more peaceful solutions. The illustrations are fairly simple but very effective and do a great credit to the story.

The story is very clever and the main character is very strong minded and witty. I loved how the voice of the main character never faltered. She always had a south-western tone to her voice. This is a great book for a teacher to do a lesson on voice of character or how to stay persistent with how a character sounds. I can also see myself putting my own future children to bed while reading them this story. It is a fun and adventurous story that has a few lessons to tell.

It is a lovely book about a little girl named Rodeo Red and her stuffed hound dog. This book describes her feelings when her baby brother arrives. This is a great read for children to understand about little changes that happen in their life after a siblings arrives. This book is about the share and care a child learns after having a sibling at home. I would have given more stars if I could.

The book rodeo Red by: Maripat Perkins. This book is about a family who has a daughter that is from 4-5 years old who likes to pretend to be a cowgirl. She is met with her new foe of the town her younger brother who was just born. The rest of the book is how the older sister loses her favorite partner rusty has been taking by the little brother. After which the aunt of the two sends the oldest a birthday present that is of a beautiful little cat. She proceeds to trade for her old partner rusty which her brother takes with no second thought in mind.

Loved this. My cousin got a kick out me reading this to him and he isn't a big reader, but the story is engaging- and pairing it with a heavily done western accent- had both him and I rolling. Red is squaring off against her new baby brother and the use of humor in the story-telling works brilliantly with the art.

Dealing with a new sibling is always a challenge, and even more when the territorial issues are challenged. This delightful story will be a hit as Rodeo Red tries to take control of her property. All is lost until a package comes in the mail. A great read aloud, or one-on-one.

Great language, voice, and dialect makes this a fun read aloud. I didn’t mind reading it over and over so I could perfect my western accent. I really appreciated that it didn’t force a sibling bond for the ending. Great new sibling adjustment book!

Oh the western feel of this book is delightful. I perfectly intend to do a southern drawl with it! I do wish it was more "redemptive" from a new sibling angle but you know what, sometimes kids struggle with a new sibling and only care about their toys and keeping things the same. That's real life.
