This is one of the books I helped put together while working as a teaching assistant in the English Department during my undergraduate years at San Marcos in the early 1990s. It instilled a love of nature writing that I didn't even know I possessed, prior to working on this project, introducing me to the likes of Henry Thoreau, Wendell Berry, Edward Abbey and Rick Bass (in the flesh, it would turn out, in the latter case, when Bass came to then-Southwest Texas State University for a reading). This book contains writings from multiple authors. Some were active, contemporary writers like Bass, while others dated back to the nation's first days. My job was twofold on this project: 1) Locate and obtain good quality copies of whatever writings we hoped to use in the book, and 2) Assist Dr. Scott Slovic in securing permissions on those writings for use in his anthology.
