Mike was born in the Philadelphia Navy Yard Hospital -- and left that town at the age of three days for reasons he does not presently recall. But they had to draft him to get him back there. He missed very little of the rest of the country. Growing up Navy, he lived about everywhere you could park an aircraft carrier.
Mike was one of those college students who didn't have to worry about finding a job after graduation. In 1968, his Uncle Sam made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Two days into boot camp, the Army was wondering if they might not have been a bit hasty. Mike ended the day in the Intensive Care Unit of the local Army hospital. Despite most of Mike’s personal war stories being limited to "How I flunked boot camp," he can still write a rollicking good military SF yarns.
Mike didn’t survive all that long as a cab driver (he got lost) or bartender (he made the drinks too strong) but he figured he could at least work for the Navy Department as a budget analyst. Until he spent the whole day trying to balance the barracks accounts for paint. Finally, about quitting time, a grinning senior analyst took him aside and let him in on the secret. They'd hidden the money for refitting a battleship in that little account. Slowly it dawned on Mike that there were a few things about the Navy that even a kid who grew up in it would never understand.
Over the next twenty years, Mike branched out into other genres, including instruction memos, policies, performance standards and even a few labor contracts. All of those, you may notice, lack a certain something. Dialogue ... those things in quotes. In `87, Mike’s big break came. He landed on a two year special project to build a digital map showing where the trees, rivers, roads, Spotted Owls and other critters were in western Oregon. The list went on and on with no end in sight and two years became ten.
Since there was no writing involved in his new day job, Mike had to do something to get the words out. He signed up for a writing class at Clark Community College and proudly turned in a story ... Star Wars shoots down the second coming of Christ.
Two years later, Analog bought "Summer Hopes, Winter Dreams" for the March, 1991 issue. Four years later he sold his first novel. In the ten years since then, Mike’s turned in twelve novels and is researching the next three.
Mike's love for Science Fiction started when he picked up "Rocket Ship Galileo" in the fifth grade, and then proceeded to read every book in the library with a rocket sticker on its spine.
Mike digs for his stories among people and change. Through his interest in history, he has traces the transformations that make us what we are today. Science launches us forward into an ever changing universe. Once upon a time, the only changes in peoples lives came with the turning of the seasons and the growing wrinkles on their brows. Today, science drives most of the changes in our daily lives. Still, we can't avoid the pressure of our own awakening hormones or hardening arteries. Mike is happiest when his stories are speeding across thin ice, balanced on the edge of two sharp blades, one anciently human, the other as new as tomorrow's research.

This is a continuation of the last book, number 16, about the Iteechee Empire civil war. Kris is in command of the Iteechee Emperor’s naval forces.
The book is well written and fast paced. As with all the other books in the series, my favorite character is the computer AI “Nellie” and her children. I found the ‘Nano’ battle conducted by Lt. Megan Longknife and Nellie’s child, Lillie, fascinating. I have enjoyed this series. It is a fun space opera series. Looking forward to the next episode.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is just over ten hours. Dina Pearlman does a good job narrating the series. It is great they have kept the same narrator through-out the series.

This is the direct continuation of the previous book, Admiral. I quite liked that book and this one is pretty much more of the same.
Kris might have thwarted the rebels rebels grand plan and defeated their attacking fleet but the Iteeche empire is wast and the rebels are plentiful and have many more ships and resources at their disposal. But this one of those damned Longknife’s after all so do not expect her to sit down and wait for them to come. Let’s take the fight to them instead.
I really like the bizarre interactions between the Iteeche and the humans. The best parts are of course when Kris demonstrate how much the Iteeche’s “way of doing things” sucks. At least when it comes to military matters.
The book do, to some extent, follow the same pattern as the previous one in the sense that Kris has to gather a fighting force, give them some rudimentary training, and the go and kick some ass. This time however, it is Kris calling the shots from the start unlike the previous time when she more or less only could react as the rebels plan revealed itself.
There are quite a bit of nice and well done action in the book and Kris is really kicking ass. I quite like that we get the story from both Kris view and the enemy commanders, especially when the enemy commander is taught a rather humiliating lesson in how to fight with battlecruisers. Not that he has much use of the lesson in the end though.
If I should complain about something it would be that the user of their Smart Metal is really becoming a bit too much of a magical wand. There seems to be nothing that cannot be done or fixed with Smart Metal.
Still, on the hole a well written, fun and action filled installment in the Kris Longknife series.

I'm not sure where the author is going to take this series. On the one hand, I liked the introduction of the unpredictability of humankind into the Iteeche Empire. On the other hand, I'm not sure the Empire's upper echelon is worth saving. I understand it's the billions of Iteeches Kris is trying to save but I'm not sure just replacing one set of lordlings with another is going to do the job? Also, is giving away so many of human technology to the Iteeche battle fleet such a good idea?
I liked that the author has acknowledged Kris and Jack are no longer the young guns they were at the start of the series and introduced the much younger cousin Meg Longknife a couple of books ago. Now, it's Meg who takes all those risky and daring missions that Kris would've done in her heydays. Meg's weird brain and how the IT systems are represented by animals is actually quite interesting. And Nelly's kids are really coming into their own.
I'm now almost up to date to the last audiobook available for this series. I hope that MS can sort out his deal with Audible so that we can continue to get the audio version for this series.

The book starts with the aftermath of the massive battle from the previous book and begins to tie up some of the loose ends from that story.
The story continues with Kris and her fleet flying off to occupy the rebel planet that was the staging post for the abortive attempt to destroy the Emperor.
I enjoyed this part of the book although I thought the ‘Nano‘ battle did get a bit tedious.
The book ends with the obligatory big battle, I much prefer smaller engagements were individual tactics and heroism make a difference, but at least this one made sense and the author didn’t take liberties with the capabilities of the combatants. I’m still not sure about the fish/bird analogy the author uses to describe the Iteeche computer systems, but overall I really enjoyed this book.

Having defeated the rebel battle force intent on taking over the Imperial Capital planet, Kris is tasked with taking the fight to the rebels. She and her crew identify the planets which are the centers of the rebellion and the ones that need to be defeated in order to put down the rebellion.
The first planet chosen doesn't require space battles. They need to find the ruler of the planet and take him out along with his staunchest supporters. This task falls in part to Lieutenant Megan Longknife who has a way of connecting with computers that sometimes runs in the Longknife family. Megan and a small task force use her ability to get into and understand alien computer networks to locate their targets and take them out.
They also have to deal with sabotage of the planetary infrastructure and, in doing so, get to know what some of the rank-and-file Iteeche are like and let them see what humans are like. Kris is determined to do the conquering the human way which is quietly bringing another form of rebellion to the Iteeche empire.
The second planet they choose to take on is the one farthest from the Imperial Capital planet. They weren't expecting to encounter a fleet that outnumbers them by 4-to-1 but using some tactics from human history, including Nelson's at Trafalgar, and hitting a force that hasn't trained to anything like the human led fleet allows them another victory.
And, though the planetary government isn't willing to surrender the planet to the loyal forces, Megan's skills with computers again allows the human led loyal forces to triumph.
This was another entertaining episode in the Kris Longknife series. I'm eager to see more of her efforts to defeat the rebels and bring her own brand of change to the Iteeche Empire.

I wanted to download the audiobook for this series from audible but never got around to it. I like the audio more than reading the series. It just flies better for me. The series feels a little off. Like Kris wants to dig in but as she moves higher and higher up the ranks of the military shes less and less hands off and the audio doesn't know what to do about that. same repeating issues of not using all these great characters he already built up. it reminds me of the random kill off a few years ago. where they died going after gas. it was rather anti-climatic. Just going to stick with the series but I hope the author finds his footing. Figures it out. this "avatar" kris through the other long knife thing isn't fun to read. add on top of it we really don't understand her as a person who she is what she wants or anything so these flashes to her make almost no sense in a human way. The other longknife has no stakes and to this day isn't built out as a person other then she doesn't want to be like the other longknifes. whatever that means. Again it feels like one of those earlier works issue with the author the ones that were all over the place with all these characters switches to people who again (where not built out correctly to have stakes and for readers to gain understanding) sigh... im not sure what to do with this series. I know I'm going to keep going but in the back of my mind im not sure if i really should.

Another fun adventure from Kris Longknife.
These stories sure are coming out fast and furiously. Between this thread and the one going on far-off Alwa, not to mention the adventures of Vicky Peterwald, Mr. Sheppard (A.k.a. Mr. Moscoe) must be writing like a crazy man. There's a formula for each of these adventures. A person might start to get a little annoyed at the "first we have some intrigue mixed with some action followed by more intrigue followed by the climactic fleet engagement" pattern that may perhaps be getting a bit predictable. I don't mind it since it adheres to a logic I can understand and the characters continue to grow, at least enough to keep me interested. I think what makes this intriguing is the big picture as each of these books moves toward the ultimate climax. I think what it's all leading up to is a vast trans-galactic war between humans and their allies, including the Iteeche, and the bug-eyed monsters that look like us. That will be worth waiting for, or so I hope.
Meanwhile, I look forward to spending more time with a familiar and likable cast of characters as they find new ways (sort of) to outwit and defeat their enemies.

Another part in the Longknife in the Iteechee Empire saga. This time, Kris is taking the fight to the rebels. As Kris gets more and more powerful, much of the "doing" starts to fall to subordinates, and it's nice to see Megan getting more of the action. I suspect there may be another spinoff series in the making there.
I do find (and this is probably me) that the space battles are getting into the realm of "one, two, three, many". 1000 ships. 5000 ships. 15000 ships on each side just doesn't sit in my brain. I also find the "just throw somemagic smart metal at it" solutions to be somewhat unsatisfying - it's like how the sonic screwdriver in Dr Who turned into a magic wand.
I do also think the clock is ticking on the Emperor deciding that Longknife is a threat to his throne, and it won't be long before a human is the second most powerful person in the Iteechee Empire . . . Kris, don't outstay your welcome!
Also, the editing in this book is much improved compared to the last several (although there are still a few howlers!). Keep it up!

Kris Longknife: Commanding
This book was well written but still is a build-up to Kris Longknife: Empress Milky Way Hegemony.
This is a possibility on where her future lies. She has already surpassed Grampa Ray. She has just not seen a need to act on that role because she is loyal and dreams of leaving her "Role". How can she leave her destiny. Her and Nly are going to grow. The origin of Nelly still needs to be told - that is 3 books minimum itself. I also think this delay of 6-months in releasing books is punative. The mini books can be released monthly, this takes care of the small timelines and leaves open for the large novels.
Keep Kris Longknife going. Her Kingdom will be exciting.

Kris finally gets to go on the offensive and, as usual, kicks butt, however she isn't the heroine of this book - it is cousin Megan that gets into all the Longknife trouble. I appreciated this story overall, but it kind of feels like Nelly, her kids and SmartMetal(TM) are taking over. Nelly and her kids have been sentient for several books now, but the use of SmartMetal(TM) seems to be getting out of hand and is an easy way for the author to basically magick up a solution to whatever problem exists.
I would like a return to the chases, assassination attempts and intrigue of the earlier books in the series.

Again, we have questionable character development. Normally, I am in favour of character development, but in this series, we all too often witness characters devolving, meaning they regress past their starting points and their incoherent behaviour becomes reminiscent of raving imbecility.
At times the thought that some ghost writer has been let loose to write parts of these books without having read the series in its entirety, strikes me. But then why attribute issues to the fanciful when old standbys like incompetence, sloppiness and senility fit singly and combined to answer the question: Why!?

I enjoy this series because I enjoy Mike Shepher aka Mike Moscoe, whom I have been reading for 20 years. These books are soemthing to fill the day and enjoy like a tv show. The major characters in his books are pretty much as expected. The aliens are like humans from a different country despite the strange body types. They may be strange but they are still believable in a human way. I have read almost all of his books except some of his shorter novelettes -- I just don't like short stuff. If you are going to read one of his books it is best to start with the first of a series.

Not a bad installment to the Longknife saga. A few publishing errors a rifle goes from being an m14 to an m12 in two chapters and the grandparents Trouble just magically appear as baby sitters. That said, the space battles are good and keep you on your seat edge and you never know who will get blown away or where the court intrigue is going. All of the history from Earth's wet navies is also a really nice addition. dlDefinitely worth the 5 stars and a read through again.

But with few allies she can trust, Kris must rely on her own wits as well as unexpected tactics to win the forthcoming battles. Kris is at it again! She's taking a combined force that's smaller than her opponent and fighting for their lives. This one is a real nail-biter. I knew she had to win because there are other books in the series, but I didn't know how she was going to get out of her bad spot. This one book is well-paced. Indeed, it's hard to put down.

Another good one!
I have not been to happy with Kris killing B.E.M. in wholesale job lots. This book get her right she should be.... Others have complained Megan Longknife. Well, you can't send a five star admiral drop mission where she will get shot, can you?

More Iteechee. This one more simple than the others and her cousin Megan has the main focus. They continue to fight the rebellion. Not up to the simple, mediocre, space opera standards of the series, but not terrible.

I like it, not the battle, because who knows what will happen when the gap gets narrower. I like the procedures the jargon the military aspect, it is a plus for the author. The social aspect of the aliens is OK I guess, something is still missing.

Better than the last one. Megan is developing into a main character. Maybe she will continue the story when Kris retires?

Sadly the series seems to be dying on the vine. This was the least interesting of any of books in the series and I could not make myself read past 20% on Kindle.
