Chris Riddell was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where his father was an Anglican priest and a member of the ANC. The family moved to England in 1963, when Riddell was one year old, and he spent his childhood in a number of different locations, as his father moved between parishes. Both of Riddell's parents continued to be active in the anti-apartheid movement.
Chris Riddell is an internationally acclaimed writer and illustrator whose many awards include the Nestlé Gold Award and two Kate Greenaway Medals—the most prestigious prize for illustration in the UK. He is the creator of more than one hundred books for all ages, including the immensely popular series the Edge Chronicles and his latest chapter book series, starring the irrepressible Ottoline Brown, which School Library Journal called "exceptional." Chris lives in Brighton, England, with his wife and three children where he invents his amazing characters in a very tidy shed in his yard.
This series is incredible. Chris Riddell's illustrations are wonderful, his sense of humor excellent and his characters brilliant. And the Teeny-weeny book in the back cover, Fable of a Faun, was so lovely as well.
I am a HUGE Goth Girl fan so have been looking forward to this publication all summer. This book did not disappoint me in any way at all. It is full of Chris Riddell's beautiful illustrations and wonderful humour as you are introduced to another collection of colourful characters. It is such a lovely read as Ada embarks on adventures with her friends new and old - the main theme of this story being music and festivals. Brilliant!
I just love Goth Girl and Chris Riddell is one of my favourite people in the world. Excellent artwork, brilliantly written, gorgeously presented; every Goth Girl book is a jewel.
Another in this charming, bonkers series from Chris Riddell (6+)

Goth Girl and the Sinister Symphony by Chris Riddell is the 4th and final book in the excellent Goth Girl YA fantasy series. (There was also a 5th book, #2.5). Like the others, this was humorous, entertaining and a well-drawn story.
Ada Goth and her friends discover that Ada's dad, Lord Goth has organized a symphony for the locals. His mother, Sparkling Lady Carole, is also coming for a visit, accompanied by three young ladies, all potential brides for Lord Goth and step mother for Ada.
The symphony is being organized by Lord Goth's shady estate manager Maltravers and Ada and her friend's in the attic club feel the need to keep an eye on him. Lots of fun and neat pop culture references in this story, as you find in all of them. There is even an appearance by a certain Donald Ear-Trump and his bored wife Moravia. (He is described thusly - 'Donald Ear - Trump had very tiny hands which he was very self-conscious about. This was why he was obsessed with very big things, especially cannons')
But there are other neat characters, with references to pop culture and other stories. There is Shaun the Faun who may have come from the Narnia series. There is Bjork Bjorksdottir who is a member of the all girl band the Ladies of G.A.G.G.A. There is Tailor Extremely-Swift who accompanies Sparkling Lady Carole as her dress maker but is so much more than that.
I won't ruin the story by telling more about it. Suffice it to say it's a fun story and a suitable satisfactory ending to this excellent series. Try it with your young children. It'll be fun for them but like most successful YA stories, fun also for adults. (4.0 stars)
Absolutely delightful! What can I say, this is a formula that works and delivers a LOT of clever references and puns into the mix of an interesting story!
In this book, I especially enjoyed Simon Scowl and Donald Ear-Trumpet. Well played on these two, I must say!
The romance element was also really sweet and as an overall ending to the Goth Girl series—as so far this seems to be the case—I think it’s quite fitting.
Oh, and I also adored Shaun the Faun—serious pre-Narnia vibes are great and that little book at the end is just darling!
I enjoy the smart and witty kind of humour and hence really love Chris Riddel’s work. Goth Girl is a truly refreshing and really funny series complemented by his masterful drawings. I loved the numerous references to the characters from the world of art, music, and literature!
Whimsical and filled with delight. I couldn't put it down.
Beautiful illustrations accompany a wonderful story filled with humorous nods to some of the most well known household names of today. I hadn't actually read the first three books in this series, as I was gifted this book, but now I must have them all!
Goth Girl and the Sinister Symphony by Chris Riddell (2017) is the conclusion of the Goth Girl series and the point where I decide to take a break from this author's works. Ada is home from school and her father is planning yet another event with numerous famous people stopping by to participate.
The problem with the Goth Girl books has been how self indulgent they are. Where the Ottoline books were avant garde and the story's surrealism was there to support his extremely detailed drawings. One can spend hours just lost in the illustrations.
Here, though, the goal seems to be to build a series of stories around puns and then make the illustrations to show just how clever he feels he's been. To exacerbate things, he keeps the punny characters/places/ situations from the previous books and re-introduces them all in each of the following books. Thus each book has less originality than the previous.
Most of the Goth Girl puns are one based on specific people: historic, literary, or in this volume's case, pop culture celebrity. Most of these references are to things adults of a certain age will certainly know (the author's age, my age) and probably aren't on the radar of a child reading these books.
But the thing that absolutely did me in an insta-earned a one star, is the inclusion of a character based on Donald Trump. He's not funny. He's not someone I want to see in a book. I certainly don't want to see his already grotesque form further distorted in the name of humor. I don't want him as one of the important new guests for this volume. No thank you.
What was an absolute treat! This book was funny, witty, and dripping with clever puns. The whimsical nods to celebrities like Tailor Extremely Swift, Donald Ear Trumpet, and the Ladies of GAGGA had me grinning, while the gorgeous illustrations tied everything together so perfectly.
Probably my least favourite of the series, although still plenty of enjoyment. Other than that, a nice ending to the series. I loved Fable of a Faun and it's ties to another favourite series.
Another pant-wettingly funny from the talented Mr Riddell.
Not spoil it too much, but there is a certain man named Donald Ear-Trumpet who inspired Davey Crockett to where a racoon hat not realising it was Donalds own hair and NOT a hat.
Just as hilarious as the previous books, with crazy characters somewhat resembling real musicians and personas as always...missed a bit of a more dramatic plot twist at the end, but just as witty as always. Hope the series will continue.
I love love love Chris Riddell’s illustrations and his stories are absolutely amazing. His references to the real world are funny and I love how he changes the names of real people and makes the his own.
The forth and final book in the Goth Girl series was just as good as the others, there is a music festival on at Gormley Hall and various musicians arrive. I love the fact that these can be read by children and that there are sections for adults too, the famous people hinted at especially. These books are just so fun and the illustrations throughout are stunning.
Another amazing read from the uber talented Chris Riddell who is not only an amazing author but also a brilliantly talented artist, creating amazingly beautiful images that bring the book to life even more. Be prepared for another rendition of puns, wacky characters even some fun for the adults as well as the children.
Miss Goth also known as Ada has her grandmother coming to stay, a concert coming up run by her father Lord Goth and a slew of women all in hopes to win her fathers hand in marriage. However Maltravers is up to his usual dastardly deeds, Ada's wardrobe is a mess and the Attic club are in full swing for the holidays. Another brilliant adventure awaits.
I love the Goth Girl books. Again Chris Riddell has written a lovely and amusing story and peopled it with characters and caricatures that amuse and delight. The illustrations are amazingly wonderful - not just of the people but of the idiosyncratic Ghastly-Gorm Hall. The extra story at the end about Shaun the Faun is so beautifully drawn that despite there being no text there is a depth to it as well as an excellent suggestion of the pre-history of another well-loved children's classic....
This was absolutely terrific, lots of (Ear)-Trump(et) references that made me laugh so hard. I do wonder how many kids will get those references, but I am sure the adults will have a fine time laughing. :P Plus I am so delighted at the ending, I was shipping those two since the moment I saw her and I just knew she would be the perfect match for him. The music festival (Gothstock) was fabulous.
