June 25, 2024Useful for beginners, of nifty size, fun to absorb.
However, sections have titles in English and Japanese without furigana, which is a missed opportunity for learning. Also, I noticed they used kana for some words that are in practice usually written in kanji. Again, not a crime, but leaves me wondering why.

Great visual book. Will be accompanying me on my travels! I don’t want to just rely on google translate I’d like to learn some of the Japanese language myself :)

Pretty good visual dictionary for use in everyday situations. Didn't try the audio options so can't say if they are good.

For a non-Japanese person and non-Japanese speaker, this welcome addition to the subject of Japanese language and culture appears to serve as a similar vehicle to what the book POP MANDARIN does for non-Chinese language speakers and non-Chinese people at a very basic or beginner's level (A1) in general. The difference here with this combination dictionary/phrasebook for use while traveling to AND IN Japan is the extensive use of full-color photographs throughout. Very lengthy if not very thorough, though not necessarily a thoroughly complicated (but still enjoyable) read.
All vocabulary and phrases herein are transcribed with both romaji (Roman alphabet) which is given below the standardized hiragana/katakana scripts, which also includes kanji (Chinese characters ~ hanzi) where appropriate and when necessary.
I have never seen a hardcopy version of this book. The e-pub formatted version of this text is 1,567 pages while the shorter PDF version is 967 pages, no less.

I've not spent enough time attempting to learn Japanese to advise on whether this "works", but I love this series of visual bilingual dictionaries and I can say that I taught myself how to read Arabic script using one of them (don't remember if it was definitely a Collins one, but the format was the same). It's by no means comprehensive but it provides an overview of everyday vocabulary, like it says on the tin. Charmingly presented and I'm sure it'll help me out if I ever commit to learning Japanese!
