I first started reading the Ranger's Apprentice series with my son when he was 9 years old.

Nearly 5 years have passed since then and he still eagerly awaits each new release.

This installment did not disappoint!

I didn’t even know that this one had came out, but hey, it did and I’m not complaining. I will begin saying that the original Ranger’s Apprentice series, especially the earlier books were some of my favourite middle-grade books alongside Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. I’m also Australian, so maybe it is because I like reading books by Australian authors. Either way, I did greatly enjoy this latest book set in Araluen.

This book is by far one of the more serious books in the series, being a conti

Aaah. Another Royal Ranger book! I love these SOOOOO much, and I am not alone. Blogger Julia Tomiak has a great post on why SHE loves the Ranger's Apprentice books, and I agree with everything she has said!

At Kidlitcon, someone said that the reason WWII is more appealing to write and read about than other military conflicts is that it has very clear cut bad guys and good guys. I think the same can be said about The Ranger's Apprentive. Not only are the Araluens and Skandians fighting on the sid

This is a continuation of the Ranger's Apprentice series. I enjoying how various friends from the past were woven into this story and how Maddie was given the opportunity to use her training to lead. It would have been easy for Gilan to take over at several points but he allowed Maddie to continue what she started.

Yet another fun entry into the Ranger's Apprentice world and one well worth reading.

This is a series I grew up with and, as such, holds a special place in my reading journey. Flanagan's newest foray into his medieval world - 'Duel at Araluen' - is a continuation of the previous installment of the Royal Ranger series. This book is brimming with characters developed over 15 years and Flanagan's intimate knowledge of each one balances this book in a way which seems impossible, considering its use not only of Ranger's Apprentice characters but also the entire crew of the Heron (fro ...more
I read this after my mid-teen and my husband.

Although the last book ended in a cliff-hanger that I could partially see the way out of, I certainly didn't guess all the strategies and counter-strategies of the three various sieges in this book. Much more exciting than I thought it would be. The three sieges were each different, and involved different strategies on both sides. It wasn't more of the same. Each had its unique story.

Still with the characters that we've grown to love. My mid-teen told

As I suspected, book 2 of this series (The Red Fox Clan) was just a "lead up" to the events of this book. I managed to read the whole book in one day, it was that jam-packed with action and I had to know what happened next.

Duncan and Cassandra are trapped in the south tower of the castle, trying to hold off attacks from Dimon, who plans to kill both of them (and anyone else that stands in his way) in order to take the throne for himself.

Horace and Gilan are still holed up in the hill fort in the

I have liked all of the Ranger Apprentice books, some were better than others, but I liked all of them. This, in my opinion, was the best of the lot! I was anxious to read it because the "The Red Fox Clan" ended with a cliff hanger. I ordered "Duel at Araluen" from Australia because John Flanagan books are published there about 6 months before they come out in the States. I had to pay an exorbitant amount for shipping, but was totally worth it. The story is AMAZING. Flanagan does a great job rec ...more

The third instalment of the Royal Ranger series following Maddie as she faces the challenge of taking back Castle Araluen from the Red fox clan, where her mother is trapped. First she must free her father, Gillan and their troops from an old fort, with the help of some old friends, so that they can launch an attack to reclaim the Castle.
A great continuation of the story, with the welcome inclusion of Hal and the Brotherband who were still in the area following Book 2. Loved it from beginning to

I really enjoyed this book, I didn’t enjoy the other two Royal Ranger books but I loved this one. I’ve never been a big fan of Maddie, but I started to really like her in this book, and bringing in Cassandra, Horace, Gillan, and the Herons all as main characters was awesome. I like how the book switches focus between the south tower, the hill fort, and Maddie, and there’s always something exciting happening at each place

The best part was the end. Maybe I'm getting too old for this series, but it seems like the writing style is beginning to get more and more jarring with every paragraph. It doesn't flow like I feel like it used to.

I read this one in a day. There were quite a few very satisfying moments of "Oh no they're going to -" and then it happened just as I thought it would. But those moments were mixed in with good little plot twists along the way. A good next instalment!

John Flanagan has a way of trapping you in this world. I’ll never be sick of these characters or this world.

his writing is so beautiful and has a incredible mixture of action, humour.
