This is an interesting adaptation of the story of Irish immigration to the U.S.. The book deals not only with what was happening in Ireland, but what happened when the Irish came to the U.S....where they settled and what happened to them. I especially enjoyed the individual stories of the immigrants.
Loved it, being of Irish heritage but really having no knowledge of what my ancestors went through. Through the reprinted letters you could really feel what the immigrants went through and how hard times were in Ireland during those times.
I grew up in the Appalachian area and Irish is part of my background. We were taught about our heritage in school and of course, in family gatherings. So much was not even known in the generations I was exposed to. Many had been here since the 1600s, so much local and family history and of course, Irish home history did not come down the years. I found it amazing how strong the Irish were, the Viking past is still alive and well.
Amazing book! Great insight into the history of the Irish people. Filled with history of the Irish in America. Why they came and what they did when they arrived. Very interesting read. Loved the letters and photographs.
