New York Times bestselling author Carl Weber and Essence bestseller La Jill Hunt return with a story of love, betrayal and racism in the next addition to the wildly popular Family Business series.
From the time he was a boy in Georgia, LC Duncan, patriarch and leader of the Duncan clan, has battled racism. Even now that he and his family are truly successful, the racism can still be in-your-face. Maybe it’s the political climate or perhaps it’s just bad timing, but LC and the rest of the Duncans are being challenged by the ultimate power-hungry racist, Sheriff KD Shrugs.
Nevada Duncan is at that age when girls and sex are always on his mind. His handsome face and superior intellect attract Kia, the beautiful “Blasian” call girl who tempts him into running away to a place where the Duncans are definitely not wanted—El Paso, Texas, the home of KD Shrugs.
What is the worst thing that can happen to a handsome, rich millennial? Rio Duncan would say it’s mistaken identity after being beat down in a nightclub by someone who thinks he’s Roman Johnson, a stickup kid who happens to be Rio’s doppelganger. What happens next will open up the biggest can of worms the Duncans have ever had to deal with.
Get ready for another roller coaster ride with the Duncan family.

This was sort of a letdown. While there were too many characters in the KD Shrug plotline, Carl Weber can artfully weave them in so they seem necessary when, really, they don't. There was not enough Duncan Action for me. I kept waiting for Paris, Sasha and Rio to hit that Ranch with guns blazing and wreaking havoc. The other twist with the family dynamic was interesting. Waiting for Book 6 to see where that goes. Still, I highly recommend reading. 👍👍
I am a true fan of the Duncan Family. I have read all the books in the series and I have also watched both tv mini series. For some reason this book fell short for me. It was all over the place. No real plot and no real meaning. I'm hoping for a good comeback story. I would hate to see the Duncan's go out like this😥
I assumed this book would pick up where The Family Business 4 left off, but that is not the case. In fact, Orlando is not in the book at all. Even so, I enjoyed the book, although not one of my favorites in the series. I was disappointed in the underdeveloped outcome. After over 200 pages of the story build-up, surely a more thorough ending was expected.
I can't stand Carl Weber!...ugggggggghhhhh 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦I swear I'm not reading anymore Duncan family books... I'm lying 😁 (Anxiously waiting book 6) #INEEDANSWERS
This cannot be the same Family Business series I know and love. This book was so out of sync with the other books. Plus how in the world do you write a Duncan family story and Orlando was no where to be found. He was "conveniently" off dealing with his crazy baby mama.
The storyline was so far in left field it was laughable and got stranger with each chapter. Please go back to the formula that made this series successful.
This book read like a bad Tyler Perry show or movie. It got three stars but it is really more like a 2.5. Carl has to redeem himself with the next book. Don't let LC, Chippy and the rest of the family go out like chumps. We need a do over. I blame 2020 for the tomfoolery for this book!
Um yeah...I was a fan of the series but like others have written the story line was all over the place in this book. It didn't quite pick up where book 4 ended. I understand not including Ruby, Orlando and Vincent as primary characters but not to exclude them. What happened to Darryl? Are you really going to gloss over Harris' paralysis and not explore how London is coping or did I miss something? What about how the kids are dealing with Daddy? Where are Curtis and Kenny? I know they couldn't be one big happy family with crazy Larry....but felt the boys were redeemable.
You can call me thin skinned but I was also turned off by racist antics involving KD. He didn't get what he REALLY deserved, maybe that will be in book 6!
Always great to read about the Duncans. I didn't like KD but he was a good addition. Really wish we could have seen Orlando but I can tell the Duncan's story is far from over.
Harris was mentioned in this book. Sounded like he was okay, but in book 4, he had been hit by a truck and had multiple injuries. He was in an induced coma. That was all I knew by the end of book 4, and suddenly in book 5, he is okay????
This will be the last family business book I read. They are good books and quick reads but I just feel like this saga could go one forever. It took me a minute to really get into this one only because I had to reacquaint myself with the Duncan family members. This book focused mostly on Nevada who is Vegas's son, Kia who works for Vegas's girlfriend in a brothel and the crooked KD Shruggs. We are also informed that Chippy originally had triplets not just twins Paris and Rio. In this story, we are introduced to their long lost twin, Roman who was raised by the nurse who took care of Chippy during her delivery. All in all, the story was good and held your attention to keep you reading but seriously......HOW MANY MORE BOOKS on this family? Also, the way this book ends, you know there will be #6 book out soon.

Book number 10 of the Family Business series, brings more enemies and more drama.
One storyline focuses on Vegas’ son,Nevada. We practically watch him step into his position as a Duncan grandson. His mother threatened to take him back to California and back to boarding school. In the midst of his rebellion, he finds puppy love, which leads him on a mission. What they find turned out to be much more than anyone expected.
Meanwhile, something weird is going on when it comes to Rio. A freak accident leads to a case of mistaken identity, but the revelation is mind-blowing! Just when you think there couldn’t be anymore secrets...here comes another.
I really appreciate the way NYT bestseller @iamcarlweber and @lacooljill addressed the social issues in this book. I recommend this 💎💎💎💎💎 book and this entire series.
**4.5** I enjoy the plot line of book four a lot more than this book; I still love reading about this family all the time.
Carl Weber and La Jill Hunt did great with the writing here. I wish I had gotten more of Sasha and Junior in this story because I feel like, after the last book, more of their story needed to be addressed. Given the ending of this book, though, how are the Duncans going to be fair, considering there are a lot of family additions and information that have yet to be addressed appropriately?
If you are looking for a quick read that has an enjoyable and engaging storyline, pick up this series
Carl Weber never fails entertaining us with The Duncan Family!!! Talk about surprises and turn of events!!!! Whoa!!!! I don’t want to add spoilers, but I will say this.... you won’t be left disappointed and you’ll be left in shock!
This started out really slow for me however as all the pieces came together it was a fantastic read. So much action and a nice twist to the story that showed an emotional side of all the characters that we never really saw before. The author keeps you on your toes with this one!
FIRST OFF, THE BOOK SYNOPSIS IS VERY DIFFERENT FORM WHAT THE BOOK BECAME! THERE WAS VERY LITTLE TO NO ORLANO DUNCAN MENTIONED, & VEGAS WAS MAINLY OFF DOING WHATEVER HE WAS WRITTEN OFF TO BE DOING-I GUESS, ANYTHING SO AS MS. LAJILL HUNT WOULDN'T HAVE TO BUILD A STORY AROUND BOTH OF THE MOST FAMOUS DUNCAN BROTHERS: VEGAS & ORLANDO! THE SYNOPSIS HAS LC DUNCAN IN A SH*TLOAD OF LEGAL TROUBLE, DRUG & HUMAN TRAFFICKING AS WELL AS OTHER VERY SERIOUS CRIMINAL POSSIBLY BEING FEDERAL CHARGES, WHICH WOULD HAVE SHOWN THE GROWTH THAT THE SERIES NEEDED HAD IT HAD BEEN PROPERLY WRITTEN TO THE TRUTH OF THE SYNOPSIS PRESENTED ON BOOKSELLERS' PAGES CONCERNING A THE FAMILY BUSINESS 5. INSTEAD, THIS INSTALLMENT COVERED THE LIVES OF LESSOR KNOWN DUNCANS: NEVADA & ROMAN, BOTH WHO WERE FLUNG ON TO THE PAGES AS DUNCANS THAT MOST OF THE ONCE-DEVOTED TFB SUPPORTERS COULD CARELESS ABOUT! NEVADA'S YOUNG A** BEING WRITTEN TO HAVE BEEN TRAIPSING ACROSS THE NATION WITH TWO STRANGERS: HIS PROSTITUTE GF & HER BIGGEST TRICK, WHO COVERED THE COSTS FOR THE TRIP TO LOOK FOR THE YOUNG WHORE'S SICKLY SISTER. WTF WAS THIS SH*T THAT MR. WEBER ALLOWED MS. HUNT TO WRITE???????! LET ME JUST SAY: I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY AGREED WITH CONSUELA ABOUT NOT WANTING HER TEEN SON TO BE INVOLVED IN ANY CAPACITY WITH A FOR-EVERYBODY-WITH-A-NICE-CHUNK- OF-CHANGE-IN-THEIR-POCKETS WHORE. BUT, VEGAS & CHIPPY SAW THINGS DIFFERENTLY, FOR WHAT PURPOSE, I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND! BUT, THEY WERE WRONG! THEY SHOULD HAVE ALLOWED CONSUELA TO PARENT HER SON, WHOM SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN BOTH VEGAS & CHIPPY HAD, & SEND HIM BAKC TO SCHOOL WHERE HE CAN FOCUS ON WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FOCUSED ON! CONSUELA LISTENING TO CHIPPY IS WHAT RESULTED IN NEVADA'S YOUNG GULLIBLE BUTT BEING CAUGHT UP IN SOME REAL SERIOUS BULLSH*T WITH HIS PRO GF & HER MAIN TRICK. WHAT TYPE OF STORYLINE IS THIS? PARIS WAS BARELY WRITTEN IN THIS INSTALLMENT SAME AS ORLANDO HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN A STORYLINE EXCEPT FOR WHEN HER FAVORITE BROTHER TWIN( NOPE, I REFUSE TO ACCEPT ROMAN AS THEIR TRIPLET SIB!CUT THE CRAP, MS. HUNT! IT AIN'T BELIEVABLE!) RIO DUNCAN GETTING HIS ASS BEATEN BADLY TO THE POINT THAT HE WAS HOSITALIZED. ORLANDO'S LITTLE BROTHER RIO IS HOSPITALIZED UPON BEING BADLY BEATEN BUT HE WAS NOWEHERE TO BE FOUND?! LC TALKS HIS SON VEGAS INTO PROSTITUTING HIMSELF WITH CONSUELA IN AN EFFORT TO GET HER TO AGREE TO ALLOW THEIR SON TO STAY IN NY & HANG OUT WITH SLUTS AROUND HIM? SPEAKING OF SLUTS/PROSTITUTION... SINCE WHEN IS CONSUELA A MADAM?! THE MADAM IS MARIE, VEGAS'S FIANCEE---NOT WIDOWED CONSUELA! CONSUELA & VEGAS MET AT CHI--NOT MARIE & VEGAS! CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT MS. HUNT HAD GOTTEN HER CHARACTERS ASSOCIATED WITH VEGAS: CONSUELA & MARIE'S LINE OF WORK CONFUSED. MARIE GOT ALL OF THEM GIRLS IN HER STABLE KILLED (BOOK6)! IT WAS CLEARLY MARIE'S FAULT! IT'S AS IF MS. HUNT BELIEVED THAT SHE WAS WRITING A STORYLINE GEARED AT YOUNG ADULT/TEENS, BUT THE FAMILY BUSINESS IS FOR ADULTS---PERIODT! I WAS BEYOND PISSED THAT THE STORY IN THE BOOK DID NOT MATCH THE SYNOPSIS FROM WHAT IT WAS SAID TO HAD BEEN BASED ON. THANK GOD THAT I BORROWED-NOT BOUGHT BOOKS 4-6 FROM THE LIBRAERY! I WON'T BE BUYING ANOTHER FAMILY BUSINESS BOOK IN THIS SERIES UNTIL ERIC PETE/TREASURE HERNANDEZ, OR STEPHANIE COVINGTON ARE BROUGHT BACK IN TO WRITE FOR BOOKS IN THIS SERIES! ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE GONNA WRITE FOR THE KIDNAPPING OF PARIS & NILES SON JORDAN--STEPHANIE COVINGTON WOULD BE A BETTER CRAFTER OF THE STORYLINE THAN LAJILL HUNT WOULD BE IN THIS REGARD! I LIKED THE NILES MONROE THAT ERIC PETE & STEPHANIE COVINGTON HAD WRITTEN. LAJILL HUNT WILL ONLY F--K UP WHAT MR. PETE & MS. HERNANDEZ & MS./MRS. COVINGTON DEVELOPED AS THE NILES MONROE CHARACTER!
LC Duncan is the head of a criminal family that's New York City, it's home. He has children and grandchild with many of his grandchildren being full grown. One of his offspring has a copy running around the city who is the target of an association attempt and ends up with his offspring being beat up.
As time goes by, we learn that there is another crime family. This one is from Texas and is ruled by KD Shrugs who is so bad that he makes the worst thing that LC's family even thinks about doing absolutely upstanding. The problem that this horrible man is also a rampaging racist with ties to the Klan and also possibly access to the new person in the White House....one we know as john d trump. He, in the book and in real life one of the most likely in all of American history to be part of the klan, at least from the last 100 years, and if Shrugs is able to buy his influence, the entire nation will be in even worst trouble. Fortunately that ploy doesn't work.
So LC ends up winning the conflict and finds another offspring as a result. Also KD is behind bars at the end.
I recommend this book for those that like politically connected crime and the fight to save the better of the two options. There is also a great mystery.
Carl Weber always seems to come with the twists and turns in his novels, and the fifth installment of the "Family Business" series is no different. This time,LC Duncan is dealing with racism in spite of his and his family's success. The cause of this? A sheriff named KD Shrugs, who wants nothing more than to take the Duncan family down no matter what he has to do. Meanwhile,Nevada just has girls and sex on his mind, and that soon leads him to El Paso, which just also happens to be where KD is. What will LC do to stay safe? What will happen to Nevada? Rio? He's got his own trouble to deal with after he's attacked by a random person at a nightclub. Will he recover? Read it and find out! What other secrets might come to the light in this novel? Read it and find out! Definitely an action packed read!
All I gotta say is ((((Dam))) they did it again!!!
This book is so fire! I enjoyed it from beginning to end. There is so much goodness and mercy. Fully loaded!! The authors did a tag team, dynamic duo and wonder twins event. This book although chocked full of various subjects, it came together. It's dripping with more to come. They did the dam thing and I can't even go into any details because I don't want to give away the story. This reading enjoyment is filled with all the drama that spills out of the family business series.
Topics explored: racism, politics, sex trafficking, human trafficking, mistaken identity, organ donation, family secrets, substance abuse recovery, money, power, & respect.
LC Duncan and the Duncan clan are being challenged by the ultimate power-hungry racist, Sheriff KD Shrugs.
Sixteen year old Nevada Duncan is attracted to beautiful Kia and wants to help her find her sister, who is involved in the sex trade. Nevada runs away with her to El Paso, Texas to help her find her sister. El Paso is the last place any Duncan wants to be. That's the home of racist KD Shrugs.
Rio Duncan finds himself caught up in a case of mistaken identity for Roman Johnson and is brutally attacked at a nightclub. This mistaken identity will open up a can of worms for the Duncan clan that will rock them all!
I’ve read all the books in this series and this is my least favorite. The Duncan’s usually bring more action to the table. The plot seemed to be all over the place. I’m not naive enough to think organ harvesting isn’t as real as human trafficking but it’s a little far fetched to think that all these people where coincidentally connected in some way. Also, why didn’t we hear anything about London and Orlando, it’s like they didn’t even exist, and they had a lot going on in the last book. Lastly a long lost baby......why? Was that necessary? Maybe this should be the end of the series.
This one was one of the better written plots in this series although the reveals were outlandish. I liked how it all came together though and everything that happened was all tied together by the end.
What kept this from a higher rating is how poorly the characters are written. They are cartoonish at this point and characters who have been in the series from the start have not had any kind of development. There are so many characters it is difficult to keep them straight.
I know these books are meant to be stand alones as well as related as a series, but there are so many plot holes that are not explained if you’ve read the other books in the series. It’s annoying.
After listening to books 1-4 then ending with book 5, I felt like this book had an entirely different formula than what drew me in previously. We heard more about KD and his shenanigans, and less about the Ducans and their extended family. Everyone just seemed to be acting out of character, and others were all of a sudden gone from the story altogether. I enjoyed the first 4 books more, but still managed to be entertained regardless of how far left this particular story seemed to go.
From book one I have been in heavy anticipation of the sequels in this series. While all of them were fairly good, this one was slightly disappointing. True to his style there are plot twists and the book is still high energy but it seems to be lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. It is almost as if he was rushing to either meet a deadline or put out the sequel. It is definitely not boring or poorly written. Simply put, for me, it lacked the element of not being able to put it down.
I just first off want to say you didn’t hold nothing back when you wrote this installment. This book has brought a side of Chippy, I’ve been waiting to see. Nevada’s voice is heard clearly. He is definitely Duncan Royalty. I didn’t even see the arc of Roman until Rio ended up in his house. I was like omgggggggggg! This is definitely what I needed to remember what’s going on with the Duncan family. I am waiting for the next installment.
I gave this book 3 stars because of my loyalty to what Weber has created with this series. I enjoy it when Rio (the least violent and aggressive sibling) is brought to the forefront as a reminder that he also has value in the family. I also like to see the strength of Chippy’s role inside and outside of the family. The concept around the new family member is interesting. The Shrugs angle was a tasteless distraction that made the read more difficult for me. Overall, I would continue to read this series and Weber’s other books with characters from this series.
3.25/5 Still a hot mess but much more put together than the other entries in the series. I still dislike all of these characters but at least now I have a better understanding of their motivations. Lot of coincidences to push the plot forward and a lot of Weber’s political ideologies forced into the story gave this a soap operaish feel. There were actually some real stakes and a couple of suspenseful moments I wasn’t expecting. So far it’s my favorite entry in the series.
