Riggs never fails to create amazing characters, fascinating settings, and plot lines that take so many twists that it's impossible to know anything for sure. One thing I do know, however, is that I'm going to age a thousand years stressing about all this. I've only been into this series for ONE WEEK and not only have I finished all 5 books, but I'm already dying of the wait for the 6th.

So anyways... The ship has officially sunk. No Emma and Jacob in this book. Like we had the first trilogy with these couple, but the newest ones replace her with Noor. It is an unsettling feeling.

I finished the Conference of the Birds in two days and now can’t wait to get my greasy mitts on the final installation into this killer series. I cannot decide whether I even want this series to end! 3 stars (though Not for the right reasons) The desolation of devils acre is the sixth book in the miss peregrines home for peculiar children series, or as I like to think of it; the third book in the second trilogy of the miss peregrines universe.
If we look at the second trilogy (books 4-6) and compact it to the first than I must admit even though I very much liked map of days I found myself being underwhelmed by the last two instalments of the series.

THIS WAS JUST WOW WOW WOW.
I was SO hyped for this, and although there are a few things i have to say about this book, it truly delivered. SUCH a good finale!!

First of all, that opening section of the book, is perphaps, no definitely the BEST opening segment I've ever read. I was shaking, gasping and actually squeaking a little. it was so intense, and well written, hands-down the best part of this book! (view spoiler) 5 stars

Then comes the middle section of the book, which was so packed with action it was sometimes hard to keep track of. On one side, I loved the action, it was fun and scary. ON the other hand, it sometimes felt a bit much. Like everything was happening at once, and it was so packed. i think if the book had another 100/150 pages it would work a little better and it wouldnt feel so rushed and packed. the action and fight scenes were still really great tho, even if they were a bit packed. I loved this book. It was super action-packed and the fight scenes were really great. However, some aspects and characters were under-utilised, and couldve had great potential. Also, this book felt a little repetitive sometimes, like so many aspects of this was just a new version of what happened in Library of Souls and Hollow City. (view spoiler). Do I regret reading all six books? No. But also I regret reading very few books in life. I'm not sure I would have made the same choices in the story had I written or edited this book. The relationships felt a little stale and forced, in general but especially between Jacob and Noor, and I wondered a few times whether some characters were acting unusual or if I just forgot what they were like since I've read the last three books as they were released instead of quickly together.

Riggs is good at plot twists-- there's often unforseen turns throughout the book, partly because the world he created is pretty eccentric. Maybe because of this, I felt lost at times in this last book. I felt like he opened up ideas without fully exploring them, at least to my satisfaction. Perhaps there are plans for more books to flesh some of those ideas out, but it felt rushed and incomplete at times.

I feel like these books are marketed to the general ya crowd, which is probably the right audience. However, I do think maybe readers should know that there's a pretty high body count in this book, and death and bleak philosophies are at the core of the book. It's not problematic, per se, but also not everyone's cup of tea. I did feel like the author/ Jacob were overly apathetic about how many people died in this one. There was basically no consideration of death and killing, even though there's a lot of it here, and often at Jacob's hands.

I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters. I wanted to care about everyone, but the plot moved fast and Jacob mostly spent time with half a dozen people. I still felt I had to keep track of maybe a dozen more characters on top of that, and it was just too much. Also, too many characters have names that start with H. I had to stop and think about which H character was mentioned every time.

The ending itself was very neat and tied everything back to the beginning pretty nicely. That being said, everything else is so morally grey that I was not totally pleasantly surprised by the happy ending. I wanted more grit there, but instead even Noor, an outsider to the beginning story, is content to go back to the Cairnholm loop.

I usually can sum up the basic idea behind a book or series pretty easily when I'm finished. This series was clearly touching on discrimination, fitting in, being weird, and finding confidence at its core. There's the ww2-esque fight against a clearly evil force that almost wins (with frequent allusions to real ww2). Books 4-6 touch on government and authority, as well as how Jacob's relationships change as he matures, most particularly shown through Jacob's relationships with Emma, his grandpa, and Miss Peregrine. That being said, I'm not 100% that I get what Riggs was really trying to say. It wasn't clear he knew himself and was maybe just exploring ideas without a clear philosophy. Or maybe I just didn't get this book, which made me fall away from the other five, too.

I'd give it 2 stars, maybe 2.5. Mostly I was disappointed that the author seemed to lose control of the story. It was very interesting and I would recommend the series to others... But I felt that the story wasn't quite what it should have been. Maybe that's the editor's fault, I guess, but the last three books needed a bit more polishing. Stopping at book three is probably an ok move, though finishing all six isn't a total waste of time, either. ...more

It's my favourite fantasy series of all time and I have a very strong sentimental attachment to it. I grew up with these characters and love them so much. But this, I'm sorry to say, was a major disappointment.

I think the main issue is there were just too many things going on. The character count got way too high for any author to control. Jacob and his reckless self-victimisation I-want-to-be-a-hero vibe just doesn't develop past that, and his relationship with Noor wasn't explored properly at all. Especially in contrast to Emma and Jacob's relationship. With Emma and Jacob, we saw the whole journey of their relationship which was extremely complex with many layers (I mean... she dated his grandfather and when they met she was loop trapped). So I wasn't a fan of Jacob-Noor at all - they barely developed and it felt very forced. Although I do appreciate Noor's representation, I still think we needed more.

On the topic of characters... what happened to Horatio and Julius? Sharon? Miss Wren? Addison? Where was the closure? The characters just disappeared off the face of the earth. Fiona - did she get her tongue back? Maybe some mother dust? Enoch, is he okay? How does Emma really feel about Jacob and Noor and why was there no awkwardness? Horace and Julius? Millard was barely in the book... I mean what happened to his invisible army? Enoch's army of dead did barely anything. Surely Fiona would have been more useful in battle... And you're telling me there wasn't a single strong battle-ready peculiar left? Did the Americans all die? Did their war rage on? What about Leo?

It was just such an unsatisfying ending. It was so picturesque. Too perfect. You really expect me to believe all powerful Caul and his army couldn't kill a single main character? I honestly wanted someone to die in some kind of unpredictable plot twist. I liked the 'Jacob turning into a hollowgast' twist, but I needed more than that. The battle was so lacklustre - where were the peculiar powers? No where near as epic as Gravehill or library of souls. Also, Noor's power. You would think she'd be more powerful than that. Because yes they can steal light (which is such a cool power) but what does that really do in combat? Not much.

Sophie. What was up with her? What was her peculiarity? I wanted to know more. She just kinda made the call and had Penny. WHERE IS THE DEVELOPMENT??? And Sebbie. Where was the projections of light during the battle? Hughs bees? Bronwyn throwing people around? Where were the plot twists? It felt so dead and lacklustre and Jacob-centred. We get it, Jacob can control hollows. I expected more.

Onto the writing. It was so slow paced. The fight lasts what, 50 pages? The conclusion is literally about 30 pages long. We had 30 pages after the big fight. To resolve all of the above... which Riggs unsurprisingly failed to do. Also the descriptions of Murnau cracked me up. I mean to me he looked like Jabba the Hutt... The ending felt really rushed and the story felt tired. He had 500 pages to develop the characters, which just... didn't happen.

There are a few things I liked. I live for Addison. The plot twist with the prophecy was also clever. Bentham was a nice touch and so was Miss Avocet's death. But there were just so many other minor things that bugged me:
V’s ressurection for like 3 seconds... really?
Jacob self-obsessed self-pitying behaviour
The WWI scene was a bit much
Julius and Horace... queerbaiting?

I love this series and always will. The first 5 books have a very special place in my heart. But this, this was an astronomical disappointment. ...more

In this final volume Mr. Riggs gives us what we've liked about the series. Adventure, friendship, peculiarities, romance, doing and experiencing things one didn't think were possible and rising above oneself. Giving us what we like, Mr. Riggs repeats hims Quite satisfactory ending of the series. In this final volume Mr. Riggs gives us what we've liked about the series. Giving us what we like, Mr. Riggs repeats himself, but it feels like revisiting, not a mere repetition, and feels good. After the 5th book (which I didn't like as much as previous books), I was afraid of a spoiled ending, but Mr. Riggs did it right this time. One could argue that not as good (and fresh) as the first trilogy, but better than the 5th book. It still pales in comparison to the 1st trilogy but nevermind. Though I wonder what Ransom could do if he had put the story off for say 3-5 years.

The beginning was magical and disorienting, and I thought Jacob would become [no spoiler], and that it would be awesome and unexpected, and I wondered how Mr. Riggs would pull it off…, but it was a false trail (and done to channel Jacob's confusion at the moment), so at first it felt like saving Jacob and Noor from V's loop was a cheap trick. At least it felt non-magical and mechanical compared to the false trail. But it made sense later.

At some point I thought that the new adventures were good but a bit shallow, because for me nothing compared to those moments in the first books when Jacob confronted unimaginable, inevitable, his fate at last - whatever - and stretched to his limits just to extend them and become a new Jacob. These were both slow gradual changes of a character and break-through moments (as the first time he controlled a hollow in a boot or a horde of hollows in Cole's castle or even 'just' pulled the trigger on the light house). And as soon as I had accepted the idea we'd not see moments like those anymore, Mr. Riggs repeated even them. Though nothing new, it felt good to revisit that as well.

I thought Jacob's character had exhausted himself and could not stretch further, and I welcomed other characters in the spotlight (both heroic figures and just many peculiars fighting together for the common cause). At some point I even hoped Horacio would become the hero, having gone from a hollow to a savior of peculiardom. What a redemption and evolution it would be! But though a hero he is (even his name starts with "H", like his former master's H.), the book is still written from Jacob's POV, and Mr. Riggs will manage to have Jacob doing the impossible again, and again with a great deal of help from his friends. But this time Jacob is not playing first fiddle, and his motivation is different (no insecurity, internal comparison to his grandfather and urge to prove himself, only compulsion to protect his loved ones). And so, a mix of old tricks and character/plot development makes it quite fresh.

I liked that Jacob's relationship with his parents is somewhat reconciled in the end, that his relationship with Emma is normalized, that (for a change) there is not much romance (but there is definitely love).

As I said, many questions of PC series remain unanswered and some threads never developed, but that's ok. Let's assume they contributed to the richness of PC universe. I couldn't suspend my disbelief at some turns and twists but accepted them. Plenty of space for short stories and fan fiction. ...more
