Timothy's Adventures

Rate this book
Getting along with others can be difficult, especially if there is something different about you. In author Tanya Packers book Timothys Adventures, youll meet Timothy, who lives in a big multicultural city. Join Timothy, his puppy, and his buddies as they make new friendships while sharing Bible stories that help them deal with racism, bullies, and other difficult situations that they are dealing with. Each chapter includes a devotional with questions meant to generate meaningful discussions for the entire family while having fun at the same time.

These stories can each stand alone or be read as part of a sequence. The author brings together typical adolescent experiences, deep spiritual realizations, and inspiration that combine to move young readers to become genuine thinkers about their lives what I would call authentic theologians.
Dr. Martin Brokenleg, Reclaiming Youth at Risk

Tanyas devotional is a beautiful resource with elegant and accessible prose, charming, and warm characters that are most human. The questions at the end of each chapter invite further exploration of some of our most sacred stories.

This is a devotional that is ideal for kids to read with their family. There are fifteen chapters, each one detailing a situation in young Timothy's life. Bible stories are woven throughout and given as examples of how Timothy can use those examples to solve problems in his daily life. Difficult topics such as racism and bullying are addressed in a tactful manner.

Themes include: second changes, consequences, love, God's creation, and blessings in disguise.

Each chapter ends with a Parent/Child Discussion Time which sums of the chapter and provides discussion questions to help the child/reader process what they've learned. The writing is at a level that will be easy for young children to understand, but the book also works well for middle grade students.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

This devotional demonstrates how the daily adventures and problems of an average child can find answers, inspirations and support in well known Bible stories.

Each of the fifteen chapters has Timothy explaining a situation he's run across during his daily life. A caretaker then loving reminds him of a place in the Bible and discusses with him how he can use that to help answer his questions or solve his problems. At the end of each chapter, there is a 'Parent/Child Discussion Time', which quickly sums up that chapter and then leads into several questions to help open up discussions and encourage children to think about what they've heard/learned.

Timothy is a calm and thoughtful boy, who is surrounded by loving family and friends. Still, he runs into situations which make him wonder about things and problems which he's not quite sure how to handle. The adults are always presented as being very patient and caring as they gently introduce the Bible passages, which relate to his situations. These verses are ones children will know well. I appreciated that not all 'answers' are the obvious ones, but the author does dive a little deeper at times.

A black and white illustration accompanies each chapter, which earns this book bonus points. The discussion hints at the end of each chapter also open up a nice variety of directions and offer guidance to whomever is using this book. It works best as a read-aloud and would work just as nicely in smaller settings as well as in larger groups.

The writing is simple, making it also useful for even slightly younger audiences, although the material itself definitely slides better into the middle grade. The wholesome atmosphere as one would expect with a devotional for this age group rings loud and clear, making it a lovely one to grab up and use.

I received a complimentary copy and found it well done. So, I'm leaving my honest thoughts.

This children's book follows friends Timothy, Benjamin, Claire, and Tyrone as they reminisce about church picnics and then race down the block towards the church to meet their new teacher, Paul. ( Reader’s will recall that in the Bible, Paul entrusts Timothy with important assignments.)

Paul begins by relating to his classroom Biblical stories such as Saul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. And, each short chapter throughout this book provides a time for discussion with questions and comparable biblical verses.

The next lesson Paul relays is the story of David and Goliath in the chapter titled, Love, Forgiveness and Slingshots.

About halfway through the book, in the chapter titled Sewing One Friend at a Time, is the story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors.

The final chapter Drama Behind the Scenes is about the importance of love and celebrating other's success.

This book is written to help children recognize their history and native language and to appreciate the beauty that surrounds them. It's geared to assist children in dealing with situations they are facing today such as bullying, jealousy, racism, and other difficult circumstances. It also teaches children the importance of coming to the aide of others, like friends and lovable little puppies.

Timothy's Adventures was provided by the author, Tanya Packer, for an honest review. Packer also provides other devotionals for children such as Kaylee's Easter Treasure and Kaylee's Adventures and she's currently working on a YA fantasy novel.

Timothy lives with his mother (Mom) and grandmother (Nanny or just Nan) on the fourth floor of a big apartment building. His father (Daddy) had been killed in a big accident two years earlier by a drunk driver, and his grandfather (Poppa) has also recently passed away. Timothy has friends at church and at school all of whom have different backgrounds and characteristics, but he also meets some children in various situations who are not so friendly and make fun of others. What should Timothy’s attitude be when people are mean? How should he react in such circumstances? Is it possible to learn any important lessons from these events?

Getting along with others can be difficult, especially if there is something different about them. In this book by Tanya Packer, author of Kaylee’s Adventures and Kaylee’s Easter Treasure Box, Timothy, his puppy, and his buddies make new friendships while sharing well known Bible stories that help them deal with racism, bullies, and other difficult problems that they are dealing with. Every story can stand alone, or they can be read as part of a sequence. Each of the fifteen chapters includes a devotional for parent-child discussion time with questions meant to generate meaningful conversations for the entire family while having fun at the same time. A sequel, Timothy’s Special Christmas Nativity, is planned.

This book explores biblical stories using a contemporary setting and relatable characters. There are questions and suggested bible readings at the end of each chapter that link to the story. It gave me things to think about and I am a teeny bit older than the target audience.
