With Prince Tzsayn captured by the Catherine's family Catherine, Ambrose, Tash, Edyon and March all find themselves fleeing for their lives and as the Brigantine army closes in they're forced into making desperate decisions in order to survive. As the group ends up separated once more they all have different paths to follow that are equally fraught with danger.

Sometimes the second book in a trilogy suffers from second book syndrome and ends up falling a little flat compared to the first but that

Demon World picks up right where Smoke Thieves leaves off. Each character having suffered tremendous loss or the uncertainty of possible loss, while still harbouring secrets of their own.

My heart is broken big time. The ending left me in a massive hangover and I need book three right now.

I was looking forward to this sequel, and mindful that there was every chance I wouldn't enjoy it as much as The Smoke Thieves, so overall I wasn't disappointed. It was a bit disappointing when the characters split up again after spending the whole of the first book coming together, but that isn't worth a lengthy grumble.

What a cruel cliffhanger! That is, I hope and believe it's a cliffhanger and not the conclusion to one of the story threads; that would not make sense as an artistic decision. A

When I read The Smoke Thieves last year I completely loved it, and The Demon World has been one of my most anticipated sequels of the year so I can finally see what happens next! While I did enjoy this every bit as much as the first book, I couldn't help but be a little bit disappointed simply because we spent the last book watching everyone come together so I was excited to see them all teaming up again in this book...but it's not long before they all end up separated again and I couldn't help ...more

SJH (A Dream of Books)
'The Demon World' by Sally Green is the follow-up to last year's 'The Smoke Thieves'. I had a rocky relationship with the first book in this fantasy series. There were some aspects of the plot that I really enjoyed and it definitely finished on a high note but I had issues with the use of multiple narrators making the story feel slightly disjointed and the overall slow pace of the book. I therefore approached the sequel with some trepidation, although I was intrigued to see how Green was going t ...more

I was sent an arc of this book via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
I have mixed feelings on this one, I loved the Smoke Thieves and I've been looking forward to it's sequel since I finished it. This took me awhile for me to get into, I found it quite slow in the beginning and I didn't start getting invested in the story and characters again until about 150ish pages.
I think the main problem for me was Catherine and Ambrose's relationship, I don't like the effect that being around Ambro

Rep: Two of the main characters are queer; also has a WoC main character

With our group of main characters narrowly escaping the siege at the northern stronghold, they escape into the Northern Plains to outrun their Brigantine pursuers. Necessity takes them into the demon tunnels, where the others, too, discover how unusual it is. Tash herself gets a chance to explore more of it, and comes away with more questions that she wants to try to answer. As their paths

I received a free ecopy of this book in return for an honest review. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity.

This is book two of what is planned to be a trilogy and to understand what is happening you are really going to need to read book one. This is a complex saga written for five different alternating viewpoints. Book one was the story of these five, very different characters being drawn together. Book two wrenches them all apart again.

Picking up immediately after the l

This book contains one of the most powerful endings I’ve ever read. I start with it purely because it hit me like a freight train.
This is a book version of a game of chess. It’s clever, and always many paces ahead of the reader.
The characters we see perspectives from are the ones you will always want ‘just one more chapter with’.
The separation of characters that began in the final chapters of Smoke Thieves continues on in The Demon World. It’s well crafted and would make for powerful tv.

Oh my goodness that ending!

We have a continuation from "The Smoke Thieves" which isn't as hyped as it should be.
The concept is interesting enough (and this is coming from someone who doesn't normally read a lot of fantasy!)
I actually really enjoyed the sequel, and I enjoyed it more than the sequel.
I found myself laughing out loud several times, which I never would've thought I would do at this sort of book!
The dialogue is humorous and very well-written.
Sally Green has done it again for me!

Guys, guys, guys–what an incredible sequel to The Smoke Thieves! Just like with the first book, I had a really hard time putting this down. And, for the record, that’s something that rarely happens for me with middle books in trilogies. I usually just find them…blah. But not this time around!

First, my girl Catherine. Woooooooow. I lived for her chapters. The drama! The potential of a love triangle! (Is it a love triangle? Discuss!) Her character development! She went from a girl who had to sign

I absolutely adored the first book, and I was not disappointed in any way this the second. Sally is an amazing writer, pulling you straight back into her world from the first page, it’s like I’d never left. I have a gigantic hole in my life now with that ending, I need book three yesterday. If you loved the smoke thieves you will love this, no spoilers but it’s another emotional ride, one you will have late nights with not wanting to put the book down and it’s well worth the trauma. This was basically the only book I was looking forward to this year as I don't really keep up with what is being released. I read the first book last year twice, Sally Green is one of my favourite author and I was so ready for a book I loved but this fell quite flat for me. It definitely suffered middle book syndrome, not a lot happened and the characters weren't strong enough to make that okay. Still enjoyable but I'm giving this 3 stars. I was going to write a full review for this book but I t ...more

This is the second installment of the smoke thieves series. At the end of the first book Princess Catherine learned that she had been betrayed by her father and was in great danger. The story continues where we learn of the lengths Catherine's father will go to in order to get hold of the purple demon smoke for his army of boys. We also find out more about the demon world - how it came about and what it is like to be there as Tash befriends and sets free a demon. Edyon and March continue their j ...more

Having read The Smoke Thieves, this book was one of the books I was most looking forward to this year. Sally Green created wonderful characters that I could not forget, a world I did not want to leave. I enthused about The Smoke Thieves to any one who would listen. I can't in good conscience now review this book, support this book, or its author any longer.

It took me a hot minute to remember who was who and what the politics of this world were but once I was ingrained in it again I was there. Like the first book, this is a slow burner but packed with action. Well told from multiple perspectives with some very interesting advances from the first book. I look forward to the next instalment cause I need to now how it’s all going to go down!

Brilliant! I enjoyed this follow up to The Smoke Thieves. It really keeps you reading to find out what happens to each character since the chapters usually end in a cliffhanger and then transition into another character. Enthralling!

Hi - I'm Sally Green. I'm the author of the real-world/ fantasy Half Bad Trilogy, which is made up of Half Bad, Half Wild and Half Lost. Most people read them in that order but there's always a few who don't. Many people who read them are teenagers but there's a lot who aren't.

I'm currently working on a new series called The Smoke Thieves, which is due to be published in spring 2018 and is definit
