Shortly after the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, photographer Simon Marsden and author Duncan McLaren embarked on a journey of discovery through the former Communist State of East Germany, aiming to capture on film this 'lost world' that had remained hidden from Western eyes for nearly half a century. Beautiful and awe-inspiring,"Beyond The Wall" is a unique, historically important photographic collection. Black-and-white photographs throughout.
2.5 stars This book is a little odd and unfortunately not at all what I expected (perils of ordering on-line, sight unseen.) I had hoped for a photographic essay on what the DDR looked like in the early days of reunification, but it's actually focused on the remains of Schlösser, Burgen, Gutshäuser, etc.,i.e., remnants of the landed gentry. Nothing wrong with that, just not my interest.
