Please note that this book was originally published as A Narrow Victory
Felix Olliphant was found stabbed to death at a New Year’s Eve costume party for the turn of the millennium.
Seemingly liked by everyone, motives for his murder are hard to find. There was one suspect, but no evidence.
Hillary struggles to solve this baffling case. And she has to contend with a new colleague, Jake Barnes. Young and rich, he says he wants to give something back to the community, but Hillary has her doubts.
Will Hillary finally be defeated by this cold case and will she lose her boss and love interest to a new job?
Hillary Greene has returned to Thames Valley Police HQ, acting as a cold-case consultant for the Crime Review Team, looking into murders which the police have never been able to solve.
She wasn’t sure she wanted to go back. But solving crimes is irresistible for Hillary Greene. And it doesn’t hurt that her new boss is devastatingly handsome.
Faith Martin is a pen name of English author Jacquie Walton, who is best known for her popular detective series, starring Detective Inspector Hillary Greene.
DI Hillary Greene and her cold case unit were digging into the death of a successful, well-liked young man that had occurred at a fancy dress party on New Year's Eve, 1999, as the new millennium rolled over. The previous team who had worked the murder case had had no evidence and little to go on - Hillary was determined to find the answers to Felix Olliphant's untimely death.
New team members, Jake and Wendy - as alike as chalk and cheese - plus existing members Jimmy, Hillary's 2IC and young Sam, were separated on their cases with Jimmy and Sam almost ready to crack their case. And Hillary, with either Jake or Wendy with her as they went about their interviews, was feeling the pinch of nothing much to go on. But she'd get the answers eventually. Meanwhile Hillary's boss, Steven had found he was to be moved from his current job, and subsequently promoted. What would happen once he moved away, with their relationship having firmed over the past weeks?
Murder at Midnight is the 15th in the DI Hillary Greene series and I'm enjoying it very much. Hillary's talent with interviews; with nutting out the "bad guys", was well known, and once again she showed her special talents in Murder at Midnight. I'm looking forward to #16 soon. Recommended.
DI Hillary Greene #15. My copy was renamed Murder At Midnight.
This time, Hillary is working on the cold case of interior designer, Felix Oliphant. He was at a swanky New Year Party in 1999. But the more Hillary learns about the murder victims, the less likely that anyone would want him dead.
When Hillary is investigating the murder of Felix Oliphant, she quickly comes to the conclusion that there is not really any suspicious circumstances. Felix had been involved in a fatal rta (road traffic accident) where the other driver blamed him for the death of his son. She also has two new team members, Wendy Turnbull, who's a goth and Jake Barnes, a millionaire who "wants to give something back to the community ".
I really enjoy this series by Faith MARTIN. I like the fact that there seemed to be no motive for the killing of Felix Oliphant. And when they re-interview witnesses, they just kept hitting brick walls. With very little suspects, just how was this case going to unravel? Vey well indeed, I say. We have, at the end, a bit of intrigue about Hillary's personal life that only makes you want to find out more. So roll on the next book in this series. This is a real cosy series to read. They can be read as a standalone but it's best to read them from the start.
I would like to thank Joffe Books and the author Faith Martin for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm just loving Hillary's new direction in life with these books. She's a far more laid back, philosophical character working as a consultant in the CRT but she still has that fierce, steely intellect! Lots of threads abound in this novel with Hillary and her newbie team really behind the eight ball reviewing the murder of a man no one hated. Add in Hill's misgivings about one of her newbies real reasons for joining the team and her high anxiety about Steven leaving as her boss and moving onwards and upwards and you have a book fraught with tension. Will Steven give Hillary the old heave ho? ....... or is there something else in the offering? You'll just have to read to find out what is on the horizon for Hill's and her team in the next novel!
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “A NARROW VICTORY.”
Hillary Greene is still on the job as an investigator/consultant of cold cases. It's a small team she has, one retired oldster who has become her right hand, a young woman who dresses like a goth who is an intern and a young man, very rich, also an intern who has his own secret agenda.
Felix Olliphant was found stabbed to death at a New Year’s Eve costume party for the turn of the millennium. By all accounts he was a very nice man who had no enemies .. but someone sure wanted him dead.
After doing the rounds of questioning friends and family what's she's left with is not leaving her very happy.
She has a murder victim, who everyone said did not drink. But he'd been drunk when he was killed. This was a man who felt guilt about a dead child in an auto accident that wasn't his fault. He was a man who mourned the loss of a gay friend in a tragic accident. And finally he was a successful businessman with a cold hearted business partner.
Hillary is going to have to dig deep to find a motive for this man's death ... and the killer.
I really like this series. The characters are solid and interesting to follow. I like the mix of professional with Greene's personal life. I like that she lives on a boat ... a very small one at that and drives an old, but reliable car. There's just nothing I don't like.
Although this is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend starting at the beginning. It's a fascinating series.
The final sentence in this book has me salivating for the next one!
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Netgalley / Books n All Promotions / Jill Burkinshaw for the advanced digital copy of this continuing crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I love these books. Hillary is continually viewed as a sort of superhero, but I love that strong, independent woman vibe. Having said that, I am also happy that Hillary is FINALLY in a satisfying love relationship, though I know that sort of thing can turn on a dime.
The book does seem to follow a basic formula that makes it similar to all the others, but it is compulsively readable and fun. Great characters, fun puzzles. This one seemed a bit short.
I have read everything Faith Martin / Hillary Greene since the Oxford Canal. They have gotten progressively less interesting, more strained, less fresh, more formulaic. Greene's matrimonial interests add little in my opinion, only taking up space, adding to the page count. The constant fawning over Greene's conviction rate, anointing her with Super Copper status, gets pretty old pretty quickly, and is repeated so often that it, too, seems intended as padding. There is excessive attention paid to characters' attire, and this author seems to be queer for silver grey suits, watery grey eyes, and anything in mint green. But probably most off-putting to this reader is the "instant denouement" that this author uses to excess. The protagonist and her team are nowhere and flailing for some direction, some answer, and then, all of a freaking sudden, like a flash of lightning, the heavens open up and she instantly knows who did it, why they did, when, where, how, and what. And then everyone repairs to the local for a pint. Bull puckey. I'm growing sick of British procedurals, and this series is a principal reason.
I received a free copy from NetGalley and this is my honest review.
This was my first novel by Faith Martin and my introduction to DI Hillary Greene. Since Hillary is working on a cold case, the investigation centres around re-interviewing a string of witnesses and potential suspects. The case involves the murder of a man at a party on New Year’s Eve. The murder took place some nineteen years previously.
Mixed in with the suspect interviews, we get details of Hillary’s life. Hillary is in a relationship with her boss which has taken a more serious turn, but is the boss as interested in her as she is in him? They both have their insecurities.
There are also two new, volunteer members of Hillary’s team who are keen to learn from her, though one of them is not as straightforward as they seem.
I enjoyed the banter sprinkled throughout the writing as Hillary jokes with her police colleagues. Hillary is also highly competitive and competent, and is keen to keep up her impeccable reputation. The jokes kept the story moving along nicely.
In all this was a nice, well written murder mystery.
Another modified version of earlier release under differing title... something to be aware of since the Hillary Greene books listed on goodreads do not match up with the latest editions available on Kindle Unlimited. I read this in between yard work tasks as it did not take great concentration. It fit the usual pattern; the romance with her boss is going well even though she struggles to accept good things given her past history with men. Hillary is given a couple new young pups to train in cold case review, one of whom has ulterior motives for being there. She is on to him, knows he broke into her office and stole her password, etc. None of this is dealt with in this book since they are busy figuring out who murdered a handsome young man decades ago. Hillary figures it out and brings the cold case to s successful conclusion. She also bags a proposal. One must read further to see what happens with both cliffhangers. (the motives of the young man she is training, as well as the fate of her romance)
Another good story in this series. Although by now I'm getting used to the way the plot is build, so there are not many suprises anymore, I still like the series a lot. In this book a new second storyline is started, and even a third, so I'm looking forward to the next book. I do not have to repeat here what happens in the story, because you can read that in the reviews that were posted earlier. I would like to say that I'm very happy to have 'discovered' this author. This series is a bit addictive, I think. I haven't read all the other books yet but I will surely do so in the future.
Thank you Netgalley and Joffe Books - for sending me this book and thus giving me a few pleasant reading days.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Murder at Midnight, the fifteenth novel to feature former DI turned civilian invesigator, Hillary Greene.
Hillary returns to work after a refreshing holiday and is plunged immediately ino a fresh cold case murder investigation. Interior designer Felix Oliphant was stabbed to death at a millenium fancy dress party in a house he'd recenly worked on. The case looks like a lost cause wih all the potential witnesses having hazy, drunken recollections and too much forensic evidence to be of any use Hillary and her small team have their work cut out for them. To further complicate her life her love life takes an unexpected turn and new recruit, millionaire Jake Barnes appears to have a motive other than his stated wish to give something back for joining.
I thoroughly enjoyed Murder at Midnight which with its mixture of baffling investigation, lighthearted tone and persoinal complications held my attention from start to finish. It is not a profound read but it is entertaining and engrossing. The plot is well done with small hints which allow Hillary, if not me, to put it all together. This is a definite improvement on the early novels where it was easy to guess the perpetrator early on. The situation with Jake is also well done as it had me slightly tense as he ruthlessly focuses his attention on Hillary. This is not resolved by the end of the novel so I'll be on tenterhooks in the next one until his intentions become clear.
The novel, of course, hangs on the character of Hillary Greene. Approaching 50 she is smart, savvy and wise except when her own emotions are involved. I love her measured approach to the investigation, her humour and her ability to to pull the disparate threads of her investigation into a cohesive solution. I'm not so sure that the motive in this case is entirely plausible but it's certainly a fun journey to get there.
Murder at Midnight is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending
After a two-week vacation, one of which was spent with her lover and boss Steven Crayle, Hillary returns to work to find two new faces as “interns.” Jake Barnes is a multimillionaire and Hillary wonders just what he is doing at the station. Wendy Turnbull is a Goth but is very keen to dig into police work. The former DS, Jimmy Jessop and Sam Pickles are still on the team.
They get the fifteen-year old or so case of Felix Olliphant. He was stabbed to death late New Yeay’s Eve or in the very early hours of New Year’s Day while at a masquerade party. Felix was an interior designer and had re-done the home in which the party was held. Although not much of a drinker, he apparently was very drunk when someone helped him upstairs to a bedroom to lie down.
With 100 or so guests at the party, there are a plentitude of suspects. Sam and Jimmy are tied up with a robbery case, so Hillary takes the youngsters to the interviews. Friends, business partners, former girlfriends, family – all are interviewed. The interviews all agree on one thing, Felix was liked by everyone and was very even-tempered. But someone wanted to kill him. And of course they all denied any involvement.
When Hillary and Wendy go to interview the bartender at the party home, Hillary notices a picture that the man has on his bookcase. Suddenly, she puts it all together.
While Hillary is right about having her suspicions of Jake, he seems to do the job well. Wendy is gung ho to work the cases and is coming along nicely. Jimmy and Sam solve their case as well, so a double celebration is held in the pub. Steven is almost scared to talk seriously to Hillary about their relationship.
This book is as well written and plotted as any of Faith Martin’s novels. Although shorter than usual, it still packs a punch. It is full of action and descriptions of the plodding side of police work – the not so glamorous part. I love Faith Martin’s Hillary Greene series and will continue to read them for as long as she write them. Well done again, Ms. Martin.
I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great little book for me to read, enjoy and review.
These are easy books to read but they are becoming all the same. I’m fed up with constant superficial attractiveness, I don’t need to know what everyone wears to work everyday, it is either the author is that shallow or needs a word count. Also they are predictable, Hillary always has a niggle that she can’t place, which always drops into place and she suddenly just knows who and why and the team marvel at her legendary interview technique. I could go on about the frustrations, and yet I still read them! I am now at that point I just want to know how it ends, and they are easy to read before bed as I’m never gripped enough not to fall asleep.
I have loved each and every book in the series featuring Hilary Greene. Each time Faith brings out another Hilary Greene book, I drop everything to read it and devour the book within a couple of hours. I am a Hilary Greene groupie. I eagerly picked up a copy of Faith’s new book ‘Murder At Midnight’ and began to read. Oh my giddy aunt, I absolutely, totally, utterly and bloody well adored reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ but more about that in a bit. Hilary Greene is no longer a police officer in the strict sense of the word. She retired from the force a short while ago. Her superior officer knew that she wouldn’t be able to stay away though and he employed her as a civilian to work on the Cold Case quad. Hilary is a woman of a certain age, who isn’t particularly ambitious any more but she finds an enormous sense of job satisfaction from the fact that she helps to solve cold cases and achieves justice for the victims of such crimes and their families. Hilary has carved out a new life for herself in that she has lost a considerable amount of weight and this has led to more attention from the opposite sex and occasionally from her own sex. At the beginning of this book, we learn that Hilary is still in a relationship with her immediate superior, although the relationship seems a bit rocky. They both know that they can’t have a relationship and expect to work as they have been working. Hilary works well on her own but equally she works well as part of a team. Hilary wouldn’t ask anybody to do anything that she wouldn’t be willing to do herself. This book sees Hilary’s team gain 2 new members. Hilary isn’t exactly sure what to make of them and to start with she holds them at arms length until she susses out what’s what etc. It’s fair to say that Hilary is one feisty, strong, stubborn and determined woman. I certainly wouldn’t want to come up against her. Hilary on the rampage frightens colleagues and criminals alike. Oh my days, I was addicted to this book from the moment I picked it up and began to read. It didn’t take me too long to get into the story and reading this book felt like reuniting with old friends. The more I read, the more I got into the story and the more I had to read. The pages and time flew past in a blur and in next to no time I had finished reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ which I was gutted about. I enjoyed everything about the book so much that I just wanted it to continue. As usual I took to Hilary from the start and I naturally felt protective towards her. To borrow a phrase from a television programme ‘you mess with her, you mess with me’ or at least that’s how I felt. The author’s writing style and well thought out plots are so convincing that I really did feel as though I was an invisible member of Hilary’s team. I found myself interacting with the book. Yes, before everybody shouts, I know this is a work of fiction but if I really enjoy a book, I tend to live the story. There were times during this book where I found myself tutting, shouting and so on as if the various characters could hear me. To conclude, I absolutely adored reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ and I would definitely recommend it to other series. The series featuring Hilary Greene just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait for the next book. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Felix Olliphant's body was found during a party. He was brutally murdered, and it was determined that he was drunk at the time. This fact is highly disputed because everyone interviewed said that he was a teetotaler. Yet, the autopsy showed a high content of alcohol. This was in 1999 and ex-DI Hillary Greene and two new team members are now working to solve this as a cold case.
There is no doubt that Hillary will solve this case, because she has a reputation that is second to none. She looks up every lead and talks to everyone she can find, although it has been many years since the murder. Meanwhile, one of the new team members is rather suspect and she must also keep an eye on him.
I have read the previous two books in this series, although I do wish I read the rest, and enjoyed this as much as I did those. Hillary is as solid as they come and has a an incredible work ethic. Murder at Midnight is a smooth and easy read. I really like Faith Martin's writing style and loved reading this book. This is a great police procedural story with a nice twist with Jake, one of the team members. As mentioned, this book is part of a series, but there are enough explanations easily made that it can be read as a standalone. I really need to read the next in the series, because this was left with just the right cliffhanger. Indeed, I can barely wait!
Many thanks to Joffe Books, Books n All Promotions and to NetGalley for this ARC to review and this is my honest opinion.
Hillary is back off a two week holiday and faced with two new recruits. The first is Wendy Turnbull, a friendly, if not overenthusiastic woman with a style that could only be described as Gothic. Then there’s Jake Barnes, a millionaire wonder kid, nicknamed The Boy Wonder, who claims that he wants to give back to his community but he seems to be hiding something.
Wary of both her new recruits, she given the task of solving the stabbing of Felix Olliphant, during a New Years Eve party at the turn of the Millennium, a case with no usable DNA or accurate witness statements.
Her love life seems to be hotting up with her boss Steven Crayle but he’s offered another job, what does the future hold for them?
Another intriguing cosy mystery from Faith Martin! It’s nice to be back with Hillary Greene for another book. This is a series I’ve consistently dipped in and out of over the past year and while I will suggest this could be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend that you’d read a few of the previous books first.
The case is a particularly tough one with a lack of eye witnesses and forensic evidence and I have to say I didn’t see the ending coming at all!
The introduction of new characters Wendy and Jake was a great idea too, giving a little more depth to the story and introducing a slightly more varied cast.
Also if like me you are enjoying the perpetually single Hillary’s new love life, the ending will have you dancing with excitement.
Overall Murder At Midnight is an intriguing cosy mystery that has left me very excited for the next book.
Another intriguing and entertaining read, with Hillary Green displaying her unique and captivating style of crime solving. Yet another mole on the team what is he up to, and what is he after only time will tell I guess. Intriguing, captivating and downright entertaining. The storyline is an interesting one, the characters are cool but the excitement meter is getting a bit lower, a bit blase I find.
Couldn't quite decided between 4 & 5 stars. Would have gone for 4.5 if I could. As usual Hillary trawls through a pile of seemingly unhelpful evidence and interviews getting nowhere fast until suddenly she sees something just as she's about to close an interview. It's certain that if she hadn't done the interview herself and in that place the case would likely not have been solved. The result was a complete surprise to the two young would be recruits as well as to, at least , This reader. Once again, however, there appears to be a cuckoo in the nest. Will all be revealed in the next installment?
Somehow this series just keeps getting better and better! Every book is consistently good.
Hillary is just getting back from a two week vacation and has some new team members to meet. Wendy is a surprising goth who has a lot of enthusiasm. You can't help but like her. Jake is more of an enigma. He's one of those young guns that made millions in the dot-com boom and now says he's looking for a way to "give back." The top brass loves it, but Hillary isn't so sure. She and Jimmy are going to keep an eye on him.
Meanwhile, Hillary and Steve have a little conundrum in their relationship. Steve is being offered a promotion that will take him out of the CRT. It's what Steve wants, but there is a major downside - less time with Hillary. Hillary wants Steve to keep moving forward in his career and she's sure this will mean the end of their relationship, but she's having a difficult time accepting that.
The case is focused on young interior designer named Felix. He was found murdered at a 1999 New Year's Eve party. He was stabbed to death and buried under coats in a spare room. Everyone Hillary talks to tells her that they can't imagine who would want him dead. He was a nice guy and didn't get into trouble. He was involved in a car crash, where a drunk driver rammed into him and killed a young boy. That was traumatic. There were also rumors about him being gay, but nothing to substantiate it. Hillary can't get a bead on who could be the murderer.
The case was a good one. I actually didn't see it coming at all. There is also a little side plot happening with one of the new guys. It will be interesting to see where that leads. I'm glad it's not looking like another person out to get Hillary. I don't want anymore of that.
This book has a very intriguing case and the start of a new subplot arc. Plus we’ve got some personal drama for Hillary and Steven.
We get Hillary mostly back to her old form here thankfully. I was getting pretty tired of the “distracted Hillary can’t do her job efficiently” plotline. In this case Hillary is given a murder case that occurred on NYE 1999…the dawn of a new millennium. According to what they say in the book this is nearly 18 years ago but that does not jibe with the previous timeline established in the book where it can be at most 2012. Not sure if this is a continuity editing problem or what but it annoyed me every time it was mentioned. The case is super frustrating for Hillary, who is breaking in a new team with two new interns. Jimmy and Sam are working on a separate case so it’s just Hillary and the youngins. One of the newbies is a young goth girl and the other is a multimillionaire who has decided that he needs to “give back.” Hillary doesn’t believe this for a minute so we’re on watch for his actual agenda. Lots going on here.
In addition to that, Hillary feels like she is at a crossroads with Steven as he gets offered a new posting by Marcus Dunleavy which will most definitely result in a promotion. Hillary is sure Steven is going to dump her…why would he stick with her she reasons. It’s sad to see her so lacking in confidence on the personal front.
This book is a very enjoyable read. The resolution to the crime is surprising and the information on the other two subplots looks to be continued in the next book. All in all just what you want in a book of this kind.
Hillary is back at her desk. This time the case she has been given to review is that of a man murdered but not really any suspicious circumstances. The nearest to it is that he was involved in a fatal RTA in which the other driver despite being over the speed limit and over the alcohol limit blamed him for the death of his son. Otherwise the victim is an unassuming person leading an everyday life. But this is Hillary and nothing is ever what it first appears. One of her new team has a hidden agenda. Little does he realise how astute our Hillary is. She doesn’t have a top reputation for solving crimes that others have failed at for nothing. This was a slightly different read in the series as much was about the past and the new team. To me it didn’t quite have that same edge as the other books which made me want to find out “whodunnit”. This one just seemed to drop from the pages. That said I still enjoyed it and look at it as setting up for the next one in the series as the background story with the new team has only just begun. This is number 15 in the series. Others have said this stands alone- maybe due to the background given but there is too much about Hillary in the other books that you wouldn't pick up from this one read. It leaves us on a knife edge about Hillary’s personal life. One I have to find out more about. If you enjoy a comfortable crime series then this could just be your cup of tea. Hillary is back from holiday and on return to work she is greeted by two new civilian recruits to her CRT department. Wendy a rather fiery goth and Jake an extremely rich young man who allegedly wants to give something back. Hillary being Hillary doesnt think this rings true and decides that Jake needs watching by herself and her right hand man Jimmy until she can figure out exactly what his angle is. DS Steven Crayle hands Hillary another unsolved murder case to investigate. Felix Oliphant a young successful interior designer was found stabbed to death at a New Years Eve party for the Millenium. Felix was a man apparently liked by all and though one suspect was highlighted no evidence was ever found that would have led to a charge of murder being upheld. While Hillary Wendy and Jake turn their attention to discovering Felix`s killer, Jimmy along with Sam are trying to clear up a string of burglaries. The story flows well and clues eventually appear that lead to Hillary, in a sudden blinding revelation, realising who the killer is. Hillary`s personal relationship with Steven moves up a notch when he is offered a promotion and a move which leads him to ask Hilary a very important question. Unfortunately I`m going to have to wait for the next book to discover her answer. A thoroughly enjoyable read with a super cast of characters who work so well together, this has to be one of my favourite series. I have no hesitation in recommending it. Thanks to Joffe books for the chance to read this as an ARC.

Hillary has come back from vacation and has two new members of her team, Jake, known as Wonder Boy, and Wendy, an enthusiastic young woman with weird hairdo and clothes. Jake is very weatlthy from selling his dot com company at the right time. Hillary is a somewhat perplexed at the real reason he joined the police. Hillary is given a new cold case - the murder of Felix Olliphant, a young man who everyone seemingly like. He was murdered near midnight on New Year's Eve of 1999 at a costume party. He had been involved in a traffic accident where a drunk man came to the wrong side of the road and hit Olliphant's car. The grandson of the man in the wrong was killed. There seemed to be no problem with who was at fault, but Olliphant was very upset about the young boy.
Hillary, Jake, and Wendy go back to find and interview all the suspects and other people involved. One clue which wasn't resolved, is that Olliphant's blood showed he was very inebriated, whereas all his friends and family claimed he didn't drink. After talking with many people, Hillary finally gets a thought that something is important. When talking with one more person she finally realizes what happened. She has no evidence, so it all depends on getting a couple of people into interview rooms at the station. The end of the story, as always, is exciting.
DI Hillary Greene, is back from a short vacation. She meets her two new team members, Wendy Turnbull and John "Jake" Barnes. Wendy is dressed in goth and looks like a teenager. John is a millionaire and wants to help do his part to give back to society. Hillary doesn't trust him, she gets strange vibes from him. Together they are looking into an old cold case of Felix Edward Olliphant. 32 yrs old at time of death, at a New Year's Eve party at the end of 1999 or early 2000. As they go through the witness list from the original officer, they find it is incomplete. Conflicting information about the deceased. Then there is Hillary and Steven, her direct boss at work. They are in a relationship. Everyone knows it, and he is offered a new job away from Hillary. She is sure this is the end of their being together. Hillary does find something that points her into the direction she feels she needs to solve this case. What is it? Not telling. What happens with her and Steven? My lips are sealed tighter than an evidence locker. What about her new help? Strange things going on there too. You will need to read the book to find the answers. I would like to thank Net Galley for a copy of this book for me to review.
This is the next chapter in Hillary Greene's life as a civilian in the police force. She is working the cold case side of police work now and is presented with a case from Millennium Eve when an interior designer is stabbed to death at a costume party. The original lead detective didn't manage to solve it and there were more than the normal problems with it as most of the suspects at the party were drunk. Added to the cold case, Hillary now has two new team members, one of whom has some ulterior motive which isn't revealed, and her boss decides to take the next step in their personal relationship. Despite all this, Hillary puts her nose to the grindstone in her usual fashion and we are taken along for the ride, privy to all the details which finally give Hillary the answer to the problem. This is written in Faith Martin's usual style, very easy to read and sprinkled with enough clues to help the reader attempt to solve the case. I never manage to but I devoured this book in the same way I have devoured the rest of Faith Martin's books, eager to find the solution and desperate for the next book. If you like police procedurals, you will love this one.
I usually read 1 book per month due to only reading in bed unless I'm on holiday. I found this book so difficult to get into it's taken me 4 (FOUR) months to read. I have been looking forward in the evenings to going to bed with my kindle and read a few chapters of Hillary Green's police procedure exploits but something changed with this one. The suspect interviews became inane to me (just my opinion) There was nothing to make me want to work 'who done it'. I was just disinterested in the plot and the characters. There was nothing interesting about the victim to make me look for an angle. I'm not liking the twist with 'Boy Wonder' or the character. Wendy the 'Goth' is totally unbelievable and no one would take her to an interview in a murder case. I like Jimmy, the ex sergeant but he's on the extreme sidelines in this novel. Totally forgettable and very unusual for Faith Martin's work to leave me cold. But, everything else Faith has done is mostly excellent and therefore, on to the next instalment for me and hopefully, I will see things differently in "Murder In Mind" #16 in the Hillary Green series.
Former DI Hillary Greene is back at work following a holiday. Her superior, and lover, DI Steven Crayle has given her a new cold case to take a look at. Felix Oliphant, an interior designer was stabbed to death during a fancy dress party on New Year’s Eve 1999. The original investigation couldn’t come up with a viable motive for his death or a suspect. Hillary also has two new recruits, Wendy Turnbull, a young and eager goth, and Jake Barnes a dot.com millionaire who sold is company for a fortune and now wants to “give something back to the community”. Jake may be competent and keen but Hillary can’t help but think that he has an ulterior motive for joining the CRT. Hilary also has to contend with the news that Steven has been offered a promotion to Oxford and believes this means an end to their relationship.
I absolutely love this series by Faith Martin and can’t wait for the next one to come out.
Thanks to Joffe Books and Faith Martin for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review
