She saw – and heard everything but never said a word … until now.

For the first seventeen years of her life, Yvonne was raised in an abusive, amoral, and unloving environment, brought up by her grandparents, and her grandfather’s 'live in' mistress, in a rural public house in 1950s Essex.

Somehow she survived but was emotionally scarred for life...

Her first problem was that

Too much description of surroundings - dragged on - so had to skip massive sections. Didn't enjoy it at all

I am just a bit younger than the author and can relate to some of the items she referred to in this book – a mangle to wring out clothes and having to wear a liberty bodice. There the similarities between us end. Truly incredible - The Girl in the Kings Arms. I was kindly gifted this book a couple of weeks ago. Normally I take a bit of time to read a book but Yvonne's writing style, her vivid description kept me glued and I found myself needing to know more. To give her account on what was clearly such a harrowing time and to be able to talk about it now is just very mind blowing and admirable.

Yvonne is clearly an incredible person, I really am pleased I read this book.

Book does not make sense but does raise a lot of questions. In fact, spurred me on to continue to write my own childhood memories as there are many similarities! There is a lot of droning on in the book about pretty dresses and possessions. Most the people she writes about lived through The world war(s) which is important to remember. I didn’t understand why the author wrote crass references to her mother in law, when she goes on to acknowledge her in-laws loved her like a daughter. I can imagin ...more
