Kakegurui Twin is a prequel to the story Kakegurui. It takes place a year before the main series and follows Mary Saotome, a girl that doesn't come from a particularly rich family. She gets a scholarship to a prestigious school but soon finds out that the school runs on gambling. She also finds out how messed up the school's system is.

I personally like this prequel more than the main series. Mary is a great protagonist. She can be hot-headed but overall she is a nice and likable person. It's interesting to see how nice she was before the start of the main series (where she was basically the villain in the first chapter), which only leads you to wonder what happened to have her go through such a drastic change. The gambles are unique and interesting to read, the antagonists are fun to read, and the art is beautiful.

A complaint I have is that the gambles can get a bit repetitive. By repetitive I mean it goes by the same formula most of the time. That's not to say that the gambles aren't entertaining, but the outcome usually ends with Mary winning by exposing a cheat and going all in. And since this is a prequel we already know what happens to Mary since she was doing fine at the beginning of the main series. Despite its flaws, the story thrives off of character moments which are always fun to read.

Kakegurui Twin is a prequel/spinoff to the Crazy Gambling Manga, focusing on Yumeko's frenemy Mary Saotome. A year before the events of mainline Kakegurui, Mary is an assertive working class student who arrives at Hyakkou Academy on a scholarship, earning the instant ire and suspicion of her wealthy classmates. Initially resistant to the school's all-gambling culture, watching her childhood friend Tsuzura Hanatemari's torment by a classmate plunges Mary into the deceitful jungle of high school gambling. It's largely more of the same, though Mary faces a new villain (the leggy, snake-eyed Sachiko, who drags around her personal "house pet" on a leash) and a side character, the idealistic Aoi, who schemes to bring down the Student Council for his own ends. While much of the supporting cast are bland compared to the original run's weirdos, Mary is a much more compelling protagonist than nutty Yumeko ever was, because in this incarnation she has fresh-eyed ambition, a class-driven chip on her shoulder and an admirable sense of loyalty to her friends which make her easy to root for. This spinoff likely won't win any new converts to Kakegurui-dom, but those of us already devoured by the "calm madness" will enjoy it well-enough.

I love the anime Kakeguri and Kakeguri Twin, I wanted to revisit Mary’s story and how she started out at the school and I am so glad I did! I definitely missed this story and I’m excited to continue it past the short anime series that they have for Kakeguri Twin!

I loved all the gambling games and I definitely couldn’t figure out how to beat them/ what the trick was until they stated what it was no matter how much I guessed. I think my favorite game was the last dice game but I really enjoyed the second game when Mary purposely spilt her drink to win!

Conclusion

Pretty true to the original, this spin off follows the same structure of every Kakegurui chapter: there is an unusual game for big stakes, the game is either rigged by math or a loophole in the rules or both, and our heroine through a mixture of superior cunning and recklessness comes out on top. Think of it as one Monty Hall problem after another filtered through manga aesthetics. If that sounds awesome to you, pick it up.

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Kakegurui Twin tom 1 to spin-off/prequel głównej serii.

Pokazane tutaj „rozgrywki” trzymają bowiem w napięciu do końca. Twórca umiejętnie podsyca emocje i adrenalinę, stopniowo odkrywając karty i zaskakując czytelnika pewnymi nieoczekiwanymi rozwiązaniami.

Only because I can't give zero stars. I'm not kidding; this one was even worse than the last one! And just just because the back cover gave no hint of how awful this nightmare prep school setting would turn out to be. Are there any redeeming qualities here? I don't know, I can't tell: the setting is so off-putting that it's leaving me nauseated. Blurgh!

personally enjoying this one more than the original, i find mary to be a better mc than yumeko (not saying i dont like yumeko and that she doesnt have her own charms, but i like to see mary get stressed out about losing vs winning— where as yumeko has the same stoic attitude accepting losing or winning. i also read the first few og kakegurui’s a very long time ago so, yeah lol)

When I found out my fave character had a spin off I couldn’t wait to read it aaaaaaaaa

AND it definitely didn’t disappoint, I loved it, loved how the games in their simplicity are so engaging and entertaining and how despite being set with the same format as the main story it didn’t feel boring nor repetitive for a second!

Im so obsessed with this series I can’t wait to read the rest !! I watched the Netflix anime first and absolutely loved it because of the story line being so unique and kinda twisted. the relationships among certain characters are so heartfelt. Its true friends sticking up for one another and trying to do the right thing.

Kakegurui is so ridiculous and I absolutely eat it up. I read this as a "try a bunch of volume 1's and see if I wanna continue them" and I've already watched the main series so I might just watch the anime for this one. these volumes are thick and spensive

Great opening to this spinoff prequel series following one of my favorites from the main series. A slightly slower start, and I need more time to get to know the side characters. But it’s got all the charm of the main series (aka still hella gay). Can’t wait to continue.
