Tom Wascoe is a new Author for me. I’m not sure if this is Tom’s debut novel, and the fact I'm questioning this, means it’s either a cracking great start, or an excellent continuation of his work. Either way, it’s a resounding win-win for Tom.

Child of the Dust is a superbly captivating read. So much so, I checked out of life for a couple of days, and had close family and friends wondering if I was still alive.

The Author does a brilliant job of placing the reader right in the story from the beg

Vietnam in the 70s. Linh, a beautiful Vietnamese girl who works at the PX on the Army base. Richie, a GI sees her and believes it is love st first sight. The author is brilliant in setting the stage for their relationship to begin to blossom despite the cultural differences and scathing reputation of the GI’s. Linh is cautiously excited and hopes Richie will return to her shop. Even though I know it is Vietnam 1970 the sexual harassment and objectifying of the Vietnamese women by the GI’s to the ...more

Child of the Dust is an engaging story about a young man in the military and stationed in Vietnam. He quickly falls for a young Vietnamese girl while at the PX one day. Linh believes that he is just like the other GIs who come through there so she tries to shut him down, but the spark has been planted in both of them. She is attracted to him, but she doesn't want to be taken advantage of, or dishonor her family. But who can resist the lure of love when it calls?
This story is the first that I hav

An inevitable consequence of American military presence abroad has been liaisons between American GIs and local women, resulting in mixed race children who are often not accepted by their mothers’ cultures, and who find it difficult to adjust to life outside that culture. In no conflict has that phenomenon been more glaring than the decades long Vietnam War. In Child of the Dust, Tom Wascoe gives us the story of Rich, an American soldier, who meets and falls in love with Linh, a young Vietnamese ...more

Child of the Dust, a novel by Tom Wascoe, opens in Vietnam in 1970. Richie, a serviceman, is smitten by, Linh, a young Vietnamese woman. One thing leads to another and Linh has Richie's son. Richie desperately wants to marry Linh and to be a father to his son. He promises he will find a way. Sadly, not all promises can be kept.

Gripping from start to finish, the narrative is told alternately by the protagonists. Their lives took very different paths. Linh suffered immeasurable tragedies and losse

This is a powerful story of an American soldier in the Vietnam war who falls in love with a local woman named Linh, and has a child with her. Military officials refuse to allow the two young people to marry, and what follows is a heartrending story of their lives apart as the soldier, Richie is forced to leave the country and Linh is caught up in the war-torn turmoil in her country as her family tries to survive. It is an emotional story that depicts a part of history that is little known- what ...more

Thank you to Goodreads for providing me with my copy of this novel to review. The story starts in 1970 when Richie meets Linh for the first time while he is serving with the army in Vietnam. Due to red tape, the couple, although in love, are prevented from marrying and from Linh being able to emigrate to the U.S. The couple goes about leading separate lives until accidentally meeting again many years later. My only problem with this novel is that the dialogues seem very stilted, not natural. But ...more

Epic Life Story and Love Story
This is an awesome book that will take me awhile to digest. This is a love story involving an American GI and a Vietnamese girl that begins in 1970. While I don't want to give away any of this wonderful story, it is a historical epic that covers such an important period of time. The author seems to have covered this with great accuracy. It is quite an emotional roller-coaster for the survivors. I am so glad that I read this book. I know that I will read it again. I

This has to be one of the worst books that I have ever read. In fact, I stopped reading it when I was 50% through it. How it was ever published I do not know.
The “writing “ is incredibly infantile. It is like it was written by a young child. The story could have been interesting, but as it is, it is remarkably stupid. In fact a young child would make a better attempt of it.
I would recommend that people not waste their time reading this rubbish.

I got this book as a gift from my sister. It's not my genre of books partly, but I really enjoyed it! The story was really awesome and seemed to be real, well-written. I like how the author showed Linh Phan and her feelings and emotion. I can surely say it's one of the best book!

The back cover of this book reports: An American soldier (Richie) and a Vietnamese woman (Linh) fall in love and have a baby during the war in Vietnam. He attempts to marry Linh but fails to get permission from the Army and is pulled out of Vietnam. Linh and her son make an incredible journey to potential safety and security in Hong Kong. . .

What it doesn't share with you is the author's depth of his characters and the complexity of those times in Vietnam for both their citizens caught up in tan
