An animal rights activist is about to get a crash course in werewolves. Lone Irish werewolf Declan O'Connell has lost everything to his arch-rival, Nathan Epoc. The head of an underground werewolf clan and a brilliant scientist, Epoc plans to use Declan to create a super-wolf. Regan Thomas, a determined animal rights activist, rescues what she thinks is an ordinary wolf from his notorious animal testing facility in Sydney, Australia. She gets more than she bargained for when the wolf turns into an extremely hunky, extremely naked man who immediately drags her into a world where the clash between two opposing werewolf clans could spell the end of humankind. Declan has survived without a clan for more years than he cares to remember, but sexy Regan stirs up all his fierce, alpha-wolf instincts. Now Declan has one last chance at revenge. But can he keep Regan alive, and resist the overwhelming attraction between them, long enough to stop Epoc?
Lexxie’s not a deviant. She just has a deviant’s imagination and a desire to entertain readers with her words. Add the two together and you get darkly erotic romances with a twist of horror, sci-fi and the paranormal.
When she’s not submerged in the worlds she creates, Lexxie’s life revolves around her family, a husband who thinks she’s insane, a indoor cat who likes to stalk shadows, two yabbies hell-bent on destroying their tank and her daughters, who both utterly captured her heart and changed her life forever.
Having no idea how old she really is, Lexxie decided to go with 27 and has been that age for quite some time now. It's the best of both worlds - old enough to act mature, young enough to be silly.
And silly she can be. Just ask her husband who frequently has to endure her bursting into song whenever the mood strikes her, feeling him up in public (one of her favorite pastimes), or rolling around in the sand with their dog - a large mutt of dubious origins who causes almost as much havoc around the neighborhood as Lexxie herself. Or squealing her way down the slide at the local park with her daughter!
Lexxie lives by two simple rules - measure your success not by how much money you have, but by how often you laugh, and always try everything at least once. As a consequence, she's laughed her way through many an eyebrow raising adventure.
This is a sexy action packed shifter romance, in which Regan, an animal right's activist discovers that one of the animals she's rescued from a lab is not actually a wolf, but rather a werewolf. Hardly believing that Declan is real, she is swiftly pulled into a world of intrigue and revenge, all while discovering that when in human form, she is attracted to him like no other. I really enjoyed this tale, with its combination of super steamy scenes and action between two warring Wolf clans. Declan might be a typical alpha male, but he's got his tender side too, and works hard to protect Regan from the fallout between the rivals. Regan is an empathetic character, a woman who knows her own mind and while finding it hard to believe that werewolves exist, when the proof is emphatically before her in the form of sexy, hard male Declan she's soon singing a different tune. And he knows how to hit all those sweet spots too. For fans of steamy shifter romances, this one is a definite winner. 4 stars.
Note: a copy of this story was provided by the author for review.
The focus is the erotic scenes, but I prefer a better story. Some of the character’s actions were not very smart.
STORY BRIEF: Epoc and Declan are werewolves in clans that have been warring with each other for centuries. Declan’s ancestor killed Epoc’s mate. Since then, Epoc has killed all of Declan’s relatives except Declan. Epoc now has Declan in a cage and plans to kill him soon. Regan, a human, is an animal rights activist. She breaks into Epoc’s lab planning to set all the animals free. Declan is in wolf form in a cage when she starts to free him. Epoc’s guards try to stop her, but she and Declan get away. The rest of the story is about Regan and Declan being on the run from Epoc and his clan. Regan’s brother Peter is a cop who is trying to follow and find Regan.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: A lot of long, explicit and erotic sex scenes. Not enough character development for me. I wasn’t interested in the characters. The overall plot concept was good, but I didn’t like the events that carried it out. A few things were done that were not very smart, described in spoilers below.
DATA: Story length: 246 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong/erotic with rear door activity. Number of sex scenes: 7. Total number of sex scene pages: 38. Setting: current day Sydney, Australia. Copyright: 2008. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.
CAUTION SPOILERS: Peter is a cop and carries a cell phone. After escaping Epoc’s guards, when Regan has a chance to call Peter, she calls his office to leave a message. Later while on the run she does this again, calling his office instead of his cell phone. The office then calls Peter on his cell to pass on the message. I couldn’t understand why she didn’t call his cell phone directly both of those times. She’s his sister; she should have had his personal number.
When Declan was temporarily unconscious, Regan put him in chains in a barn. She said it was to keep him in one place while she left to find a vet to come help him. The next minute, the bad werewolves arrive. Only Declan has the strength to save her, but he can’t protect her because she chained him up. She knew that werewolves were after them and so far only Declan had been able to protect her. I was shaking my head at this one. I couldn’t find any rational reason for her to chain him.
Peter does a terrible job of being a cop because he’s attracted to and being influenced by a beautiful woman who is a spy for the bad guys. Out of his stupidity and confusion he helps the bad guys kidnap Regan. Also, Peter thinks Declan is a bad guy and fights him even though Regan is telling him to stop. He was not fun to read about.
Argh, I find it frustrating when this site doesn't let me give 0.5 stars!
It's nice to be able to read something you can sort of relate to, even if it's just the familiar city names and settings. Somehow though, I can feel a bit of Americanism seeping through the prose, like the editor's deliberately made moves to "exoticise" (doubt this word exists in the vernacular, but work with me here!) Australia for the alienated audiences. Personally it's cringe-inducing but I guess for others it's pretty amusing and perhaps even exciting.
The sex between the protagonist couple, Duncan and Regan, is palpable to boot, but the romance is all rather absurd (as you would expect in these things. ;D). There's a fair amount of action and some rather brutal sexual violence but it's not gratuitous.
One point I would have liked to have seen elaborated on is the relationship between Regan's brother, Peter and his partner Yolanda. There's definitely a unique dynamic between them that wasn't resolved very well at the end of the novel. I'm hoping this will be continued in the next book, if any?
An Irish werewolf is on the run around Sydney in Lexxie Couper's Savage Retribution.
High-profile animal rights activist Regan Thomas sneaks into an animal testing facility, and manages to rescue a wolf...but he's actually Declan O'Connell, a werewolf. And the lab owner is Nathan Epoc, a Scottish werewolf from a rival clan. Epoc wants to siphon Dec's power. Dec wants to punish Epoc. And Regan wants to shag Dec...or run away from him, alternately.
This is a fun romp, as long you don't think about it too hard. Unprotected shagging with someone you've known less than a day? Dec could've had rabies, for all we know. And there's a lot of running/driving around whilst nude, but generally the public didn't notice (minus one kindy group).
The author does well in making detective Yolanda Vischka rather grey, her presence either a coincidence or a conspiracy. Thus Regan's cop brother is confused about his new partner, though suspect or not he totally wants to do her.
If you're looking for a Sydney version of Keri Arthur, Lexxie Couper may do the trick.
P.S. A pronunciation guide for the Celtic words would've been helpful.
It quite hard to find paranormal romances set in Australia (Keri Arthur writes some amazing paranormal Australian books, but the ones I've read of hers are set in Melbourne and I'm from Sydney.). Couper's Savage Retribution was a wonderful find and I devoured it in a day. The hero isn't Australian, but a very sexy Irish werewolf with a horrible history and an even more horrible relationship with the villain (I'm beginning to see a trend with COuper's works - her villains are all vile and nasty). The heroine is a normal human, but boy is she thrown into the deep end of the paranormal world when she saves what she thinks is a wolf.
I love the Australian setting and characters, and I particularly love the issue of animal testing addressed in the plot. Plus, the romace is scorching hot and the chemistry between Declan and Regan is instant and undeniable.
There is a scene where Regan is almost raped which may distrurb some sensative readers but it is very important to the plot and handled well by the author.
This was so good, but yet so different from what I've read of Lexxie's in the past in a good way. It still had her signature sexual tension between the main characters, she's a master at that, but the plot itself was interesting and fun as well. :) I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series, because I'm curious as to where things are going to go with the cast of secondary characters.
