Feldbrugge (emeritus, East European law, Leiden U., the Netherlands) presents 13 papers from a May 2002 symposium entitled "Beginnend recht," translated by some contributors as "incipient law" and others as "law's beginnings," with the translated subtitle reading "the development of law in a society, as seen from the viewpoint of legal history, legal anthropology, and legal theory." After a broad theoretical consideration of the definition of incipient law, a series of papers explore several of the earliest legal systems of Indo- European peoples and consider commonalities.
