I enjoyed the illustrations of New York City. The illustrator has a loose painterly approach to illustration, and that gives the street scenes a lot of energy. One thing to note is that this was produced before 9/11, so the World Trade Towers appear. If you're teaching your kids about the famous landmarks of New York City, that may raise the issue of terrorism in your conversation.
