Good, easy to read, verse-by-verse commentary on Mark. Phillips makes a number of great observations about the passages, putting them in geographical, political, and cultural context. I have read a number of his commentaries and will continue to read others that he has written. In my study of the Gospels this year, it is fitting to have read through Mark and this commentary first, as it seems to be the backbone of the other Synoptic Gospels.
Dr. John Phillips was born in Britain. He served in the British Army in Palestine where he saw many of the events which led to the birth of the State of Israel. After the War he joined the Bank of Montreal and went to Canada. In the Canadian north-west he founded and pastored a small church in a bi-vocational capacity.
