When ace high school detective Jimmy Kudo is fed a mysterious substance by a pair of nefarious men in black—poof! He is physically transformed into a first grader. Until Jimmy can find a cure for his miniature malady, he takes on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and continues to solve all the cases that come his way.
In this suspense-filled volume:
Jimmy, Rachel and Richard take a vacation aboard a cruise ship, but little do they know that the patriarch of the wealthy Hatamoto family is about to be murdered.
With the perpetrator still aboard, can you figure out whodunit before Conan does!?
Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Wer und was steckt dahinter?
Ahh, Case Closed. Detective stories and hilariously bad sci-fi all in one. :)
This book covers two stories - first, a series of murders on a ship and second, the case of a doctor receiving strange mail from an unknown source, containing toys and money, along with a morning glory once a year. The first story is okay - solid and fast-paced but with nothing particularly memorable. But the second... oh the second.
Not only was the cause of the mail and the conclusion of this story pretty startling and a bit... sad? Not exactly the right word, but close. But in this book, we also get the first instance of Rachel (Jimmy/Conan's girlfriend from when he was normal, and who he is living with) starting to suspect that as illogical as it sounds, maybe that brainiac brat who's staying with them might actually be Jimmy.
It would have been easy for them to have never brought the idea up to her, but they did by the third book, which I really appreciate. Rachel's a clever, smart and resourceful lady. It would have felt like a betrayal of her character to never have her question the suspicious timing and the similarities between them. Conan's solution is clever even as it's obvious. (And the one slight issue with it made me laugh, though I suspect it was way more obvious in Japanese than in English)
Conan is on a vacation cruise with a wealthy family when one of the guests is murdered. Who did it? The cranky grandfather, the creepy cousin, or the innocent-looking girl about to get married?
In the second mystery, a doctor keeps receiving used toys sent by a mysterious person every year on August 3rd.
To make things more awkward, his girlfriend is starting to suspect his real identity. (He is a high school student famous for his solving mysteries but some mysterious enemies turned him into a 6 year old kid.)
Chapters 020-029 Favorite Case: Hatamoto Family Case
Having a lot of false evidences lead you conveniently to a suspect from the very start, chances are that suspect isn't the real culprit. And that was what happened in this case. It was actually a smooth move to have Ichiro as the culprit. I know that a lot of times, the ones who seem unlikely to do the crime ended up being the culprit. Yes, he has his own motive, but it appeared not strong enough to kill his grandfather. And since money was a real deal in the family, you would think that money was linked to the real motive. But just like what Conan had said, he indeed dug his own grave with his last move. He thought that by stabbing himself, it would make him less suspicious and more a victim, but it was what made him more rooted as the culprit. But if it weren't because of Conan's deductions, I can never link all the three incidents with each other to know who did it.
In The Monthly Presents Case, I remember how suspicious Ran was about Conan's identity. It was just a really small case. I think it was made like that just to remind us that Conan was actually Shinichi and we should never forget about it. Sometimes that reminder would surfaced whenever the Black Organization was mentioned but a lot of times it was not. I mean, all the time it was about Conan solving the cases and as a great amount of time passed by, we were getting too familiar with the image of the child doing all the work that we seemed to forgot that he was actually in the middle of his own case as well. That he was actually a teenager stuck in a child's body. It was just great to see that there's at least one person that was able to see even just a small shadow of the truth about Conan's identity.
Kasus hanya dua tapi lumayan komplek. Kasus pertama tentang pembunuhan yang dilatar-belakangi intrik keluarga. Perebutan harta warisan.
More good mystery stories here. This book has only two stories, with the majority of the book being a murder mystery on a large ship. It's a good story though I mostly saw the end coming after a certain point. My beef with this story is the ship apparently sailed itself. We never see or hear from any crew and at one point everyone on the ship is supposedly confined to one room while the suspected killer is roaming around. I guess the killer might've been at the helm, since someone had to keep the ship from running aground. I know it's just a fun manga, but that omission was glaring!
★★★☆☆ - 3.0 This was definitely not my favourite volume of these Manga. I don’t see me remember the cases for long, yet it was still an enjoyable read at the time. The volume includes two cases. The first of which should have been built for me to love. A set of characters assembled on a ship, a death within this enclosed setting and a bunch of family members as suspects. Yet it lost me somewhere through. I think it could have been one or two chapters shorter and the conclusion to me was predictable and slightly underwhelming. Then the second case felt like filler to me. Yes, it was emotional and had high stakes. I didn’t enjoy reading it though. I felt about it in the same vein as when a dog is introduced and immediately I am worried he will be hurt. Yes, it works, but it feels cheap, as if the author didn’t want to spend time making me root for characters, so they chose to select a vulnerable character that I will sympathise with either way. Ultimately, these chapters were not about the case but the development between Ran and Conan and though that was entertaining, the result of it was underwhelming in the end.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Rupanya aku sudah baca volume ini ya? Agak lupa. Kukira lanjutannya bakal petualangan Detektif Cilik menyelidiki rumah Shinichi. Hahaha.
It’s hard to rate this objectively: I’m a huge Agatha Christie fan and a sucker for locked room or closed circle murder mysteries, so, of course, I ate this one up.
There’s something to be said for familiar story setups, though, especially when paired with clever craftsmanship. Case Closed has perfect pacing, which makes up for its sometimes-predictable plot; the dynamic panel work keeps up momentum by keeping readers’ eyes moving across the page. This constant flow makes climactic moments that break pattern feel all the more satisfying. (Basic rules of comic/manga layout, I know, but I just have to praise its application in this manga in particular!)
Plus, the narrative layer involving Jimmy’s shenanigans as he attempts to be taken seriously in his child form add charmingly varied stakes to the story, maintaining a more lighthearted tone even as the shadow of a larger syndicate threat looms. These volumes are quick, easy reads—I think in part because the creator has clearly done his research (I always appreciate his mystery novel recommendations on the extra pages, haha).
I look forward to reading more of Conan’s adventures!
Yg lagi di kapal sama kiriman hadiah rahasia. Klo dipikir2, aku klo jadi Ran juga bakaln curiga sih sama Conan, cuman emang pasti ngerasa gak masuk akal. Tapi keknya, Ran udah tahu deh klo Conan emang Shin tuh dri yg vol.
Definitely my favorite Case Closed book so far! The plot was so fun. I love murder mysteries that take place on a boat/train - everyone’s stuck together for a while, you get a great cast of characters and a time limit for figuring out the mystery. Makes things very interesting!
As always, I love this series with its delightful art style, clever paneling, and dramatic line work! In this volume, there were only 2 mysteries (not a bad thing) because the first mystery was longer and more complex (a good thing, since it contained many characters involved in 3 murders on a boat!) whereas the previous volumes both contained shorter 3-4 mysteries each. New gadgets from Dr. Agasa keep appearing, and the tension rises as Rachel starts questioning Conan’s identity for the first time! Oof
Two cases in this book, the first being very classic whodunnit where everyone is confined to one location. I almost rated this as 3 stars because of the second case but then it turned into a really emotional story and I was hooked. Unfortunately this is also the beginning of constantly being teased with Ran always “almost” knowing the truth…
Another great read! I’m going to go out and pick up volume 4 today!
Reread of 2025: 3.5 Stars i still stand by what i said before - but just reading it this time and not rating every individual chapter made me realize that i enjoyed this a lot as a whole and it is deserving of at least a 3.5
Detektiv Conan 3: 3 Stars [5.30 - good]
This was a very weird Volume to rate.
We have 2 cases - both of which I really enjoy - but both of which have a high negative to them. The first case is starting off amazingly. I adore the first half of it - but the ending is simply bad in my opinion. Should've definitely been a different killer or atleast someone with a better motive/plot. This sadly truly drags the case down for me. But regardless the first three chapters were really great. The final two chapters really should've been one as well. It dragged towards the end.
The second case is one I ADORE. I remembered it and went YAY immediately. And then I remembered the subplot and went NOOOOO immediately. in hindsight I don't mind the subplot all that much - I actually sort of like it... But while it was happening I was like. NO PLEASE STOP. and just wanted the case. I am very confused about what I think here^^
All in All I think this Volume is good but it has it's little moments that dragged it down for me. Nontheless very enjoyable and two Cases that had a lot of greatness within them.
I've come across a lot of really, really good manga in the past few years-- a Bleach book even hit my Best Reads of 2007 list-- but volume 3 of Case Closed may be the best manga I've yet read. Vol. 3 follows the same rhythm as the rest of the series, with two stories. The first has Conan and the gang solving a mystery on a cruise ship, and it's your basic Case Closed; good, solid stuff, a lot of fun, but nothing special. It's the second story that really got me-- a doctor who has been getting a million yen a month, accompanied by toys for his child. Unable to figure out who's sending him these gifts, he turns to Conan and co. to help him figure it out. This story shows Aoyama's ability to inject real depth of character into the folks in the stories, and it works very well. Excellent stuff, this. *****
