Mad at the world...

Aaron Dallas, the handsome co-captain of the Sweet Valley High soccer team, used to be friendly and likeable. But suddenly he's changed. He explodes whenever the smallest thing goes wrong, and lashes out at everyone, including his teammates and his girlfriend, Heather.

Elizabeth Wakefield is concerned about the change in Aaron. Her boyfriend, Jeffrey French, is Aaron's best friend. Jeffrey keeps making excuses for Aaron, and Elizabeth can't persuade him that his best friend really needs help—until Jeffrey himself becomes the target of Aaron's rage.

Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

All four stars go to the sub plot!

This book should’ve been called Jessica and the Tofu -Glo disaster 😂😂😂 (it totally would’ve been if this was a SVT one).

Aaron has family drama which causes him to act like a jerk.
Jefferey actually just is a boring jerk.
Elizabeth is massively judgemental jerk about Aaron’s girlfriend, Heather, who seems like a sweet girl.
Jess is on top scheming form and Prince Albert is the best 😂😂😂

I remembered the subplot but none of the main one which tells you everything you need to know; the world really does revolve around Jess!

Double Love’s podcast about this instalment is pant wettingly funny, especially with how much of a knob Elizabeth is. One of the funniest episodes yet!

Aaron Dallas is an asshole, but he's just misunderstood, y'all. Yeah, even punching people can be explained away by his "dealing with" his mom's leaving the family (maybe she left because her husband was an angry abusive dude? I mean several times its referenced that Aaron is dealing similarly to his dad). Also, Jessica sells Tofu-Glo beauty products to all her friends in that super sitcom staple subplot used by everything from the Brady Bunch and Three's Company to Saved by the Bell and Full Hoyse.

In which Jessica becomes a Tofu-Glo™ girl! That's right, Tofu-Glo™ health and beauty products are hitting the streets of Sweet Valley in this one, and no one is safe from disgustingly all-natural items like Tofu-Shampu and Soya-Soft moisturizer. Will the hideous stench of granola seep into this once idyllic California suburb for good? Read to find out! 😂

the older i get, the more i realize that elizabeth was such an asshole. the main storyline of this is that aaron dallas' parents are getting divorced and his anger is oUt Of CoNtRoL. he even punches bland, bland, boringass jeffrey french. but really, it's sort of elizabeth who is out of control. she gets on jeffrey's ass for supporting his friend and teammate, who's going through a difficult time and then puts aaron's ass on blast in the friggin school paper so everyone knows that if he gets into another altercation, he's off the soccer team. way to put a target on his back and your own, liz. she's also super snotty to aaron's girlfriend who she immediately writes off as vapid because she likes clothes. she designs and makes those clothes, you insufferable b. elizabeth is the worst.
the real star of this book though is jessica, who gets involved in a pyramid scheme. she becomes a "tofu-glo girl," selling soaps and shampoos and creams made at least in part by tofu. she doesn't try the product herself, has one big party to sell it to everyone her age that she can, and offers everyone a money-back guarantee if they don't like it. obviously the shit doesn't work and needs to be refrigerated and all spoils horrendously, attracting the neighborhood dogs. i don't know how a bunch of neighborhood dogs get loose to bark at the wakefield garage with prince albert the perpetual puppy of the wakefield household, but i guess dogs just roam free in idyllic sweet valley.
there was also a brief revelation that alice wakefield puts cheese in a food processor which seems insane to me unless you need to shred truly massive amounts of cheese. but more importantly, she might be a casual racist?

Definitely outdated

These books definitely haven't aged well! I used to love Elizabeth's character but re-reading the books now, really makes me realise how snotty she could be - she really doesn't come across well in this one. I confess I only actually read this book again for the Tofu-Glo sub plot - the products are supposed to be "natural" then gives a list of the ingredients!! (Perhaps I'm missing something though!!) The best thing about this one imo is the adorable Prince Albert.

Ugh, I hated Elizabeth, Jessica, Jeffrey, and Aaron so much in this book. Liz for being a hateful shrew to Heather because Heather dared to have different interests than St. Liz.

Aaron - for being a horrible person and not seeking help because of his Daddy Issues.

Jeffrey - for being a worthless enabler.

Jessica for being stupid and not reading a product label. And then actually profiting from her mistake. SERIOUSLY? They didn't bother to read the instructions! Why should thay win a frakkin' lawsuit?!

Never fear, Prince Albert is a yellow lab again. Actually a "golden Laborador puppy" It's a good thing he fell into the time warp that is Sweet Valley, now he can remain a puppy as long as the girls remain sixteen.

Out of Control
Aaron Dallas has been acting up lately because his mom left his Dad for another woman. During practice for a big game against Big Messa (Do they have any other schools in SV but this one?) one of his soccer teammates trips him and he goes off. The coach gives him a warning. One more time and he’s off the team and won’t play in the game.

Aaron is dating a girl named Heather and they double dare with Jeffry and Elizabeth to go to a movie. Aaron and Jeffry are besties because they meet at soccer, summer, camp last summer.
Only Elizabeth thinks Heather is a air-head that only wants to talk about clothes and Aaron. We find out Heather is one of those people that like to talk through the movie (this wouldn’t bother me. My family and I do this all the time back and forth about the plot). But it does Elizabeth.
It doesn’t get better at Casey’s. Heather tries to bond with Elizabeth (she’s also one of those people that even if you don’t know then well pour out their life story. BEEN THERE!), but she finds it awkward (I agree on that one! I had a friend who had a friend and my friend left me with her friend and she started telling me why her children got taken and a sexual experience she and my friend had).

Aaron and Jeff have gone to the next table to talk to some of the guys on the team. Shortly after a fight breaks out. Aaron starts getting loud and arguing with a guy over the play that was called in the game. Elizabeth leaves afterward with Jeffry when Heather starts baby-talking Aaron. This seems to calm him down. (And yes, it’s a little too private to do that in front of other people. Even if your guy likes it. Pull him to the side. I was cringing reading it). So not the best date.
Jeffry and Elizabeth have a tense ride home. Jeffry always seems to think Aaron is in the right and doesn’t realize he has a problem. Elizabeth (as usual) thinks it’s her place to write a article about another fight that goes down in another practice.

We get a short chapter about Heather who we learn designs and makes most of her clothes and wants to be a fashion designer. She just does the baby talk because Aaron likes it. And she just loves him and is trying to be a good girlfriend. She knows Elizabeth doesn’t like her, but she wants her to because she respects her (snorts. Heather, you don’t need to run up after “Saint” Elizabeth. You sound like a better character than she could ever be).

So even tho Heather talks to Aaron, of course, he gets in another fight. Strike two! Strike three comes when he gets into it with Jeffry over the article and punches him in the face in the hallway
(RUN HEATHER! DO NOT PASS GO!), But ignoring ALL THE RED FLAGS that down the line this might one day be her, she talks him into going to the counselor. The halls are buzzing in SVH. This was his final warning (don’t show up in the morning), is probably what Coach Green is gonna tell him for the big game. But somehow SVH is the laxest school in the world and the counselor has a sit down with Aaron and Mr. Dallas and it’s agreed the best thing is to let him keep playing. Of course, they win.

Where is Jessica in all this? She’s gotten involved with a get-rich-quick scheme to sell something called Tofu Glow. But she doesn’t know she has to refrigerate the stuff. She throws a party and it starts off good. (During the party Elizabeth imitates Heather’s baby talk and all the girls eat it up). But then the stuff starts to stink and all the customers want their money back.
Ned finds out the company has a suit and all the Tofu Glow girls get refunded the money the put in. It ends with Johanna Porter (who dropped out) coming back to SVH.

My Thoughts:

I have a LOT of thoughts about Aaron. My heart did go out to Aaron and his dad. It’s hard enough to have a parent walk out on you. Thankfully this never happened to me. When my parents divorced my dad has always been in walking range. I don’t remember going through the anger most divorced kids seem to go through in books. But I was much younger. But to lose a spouse to another man is just… The WORSE thing you can ever do to damage someone who loves you is walk away. And this seems like it was unexpected. Mr. Dallas probably thought that for the most part he had a good marriage and a loving wife.

I wanna say maybe his temper was why she left, but the book says this happened *after* she left. But I wonder were there traces of it *in* the marriage. If so that changes the story slightly. Don’t get me wrong she’s still the bad guy for leaving Aaron. Did she just forget she has a son? Couldn’t she have just told him she wasn’t leaving him just his father. And that she still loved him and would be there?

Heather, I liked from the start but I’m scared for Heather. For YEARS I dated a guy with anger and management issues. He was JUST like Aaron. ANYTHING someone did to him at work (and ironically, he like the guy who picked up the Tofu Glow worked for the city garbage department) set him off in a rage. While I never got his heat luckily, it’s a tricky card to play to be with someone like that. As we can see he hits his BEST FRIEND. How long I’m wondering will Heather say something he doesn’t agree with and he swings on her. And while I love Heather’s loving and devoted nature, she doesn’t seem like the type that would leave quick. I know she wants to be with him through this because she loves him butttt...

Also, are you trying to make us believe that in one session with this lady she’s just soooo good Aaron is cured with just one talk! BS! I’ve had anger inside me for YEARS that I knoooow won’t get cured with one session talking to anybody. Luckily, I have ways to channel mine.
Speaking of Aaron should have been not only thrown off the soccer team but expelled for all the fights he’s gotten into on school grounds. What kind of school is SVH? So far they’ve let a hacking attempt slide and several fistfights. REALLY? COME ON!

And I really don’t get why everyone wants to run to (or chase after) Elizabeth Wakefield. She often talks about Jessica and her friends but she’s ten times worse. At least they don’t hide under the façade of being “the good girl”. There is nothing good or sweet about Elizabeth. She’s as judgemental as they come. And then what gets on my damn nerves is she always wants to hop into (or the author always involves her in) other characters’ situations that she doesn’t normally have anything to do with. Like the last book when a senior call her for help. YEEEAH! She didn’t HAVE to write that article. And why is she covering a SPORTS event for a GOSSIP column? She was just being messy.

As for Jessica, Tofu Glow? The name doesn’t even SOUND like something anyone would want to buy. Is there not a Mary Kay company in SV? My stepmom did this for many years and found success. Sometimes you just have to use your common sense!

Aaron is the co-captain of Sweet Valley High's football team and he is an incredible player. The problem at the moment, though, is that he has developed an incredibly bad anger and is not hesitant at all to take it out on someone else.

Jeffrey Finch, Elizabeth's boyfriend, is a good friend of Aaron and tries to help him with his problem but to no avail.

It turns out his parents are getting a divorce because his mother cheated on his father which, obviously, is going to cause problems for Aaron.

The other them is Jessica's attempt to become a seller of Tofu-glo, some kind of new, wonder cosmetic. She gets the kit and goes selling it door-to-door.

Then she runs inta major problem (which is to be expected.)

Aaron's behavior gets worse and it seems as if he's going to be thrown off the football team before the big game against Mesa.

So it's up to Elizabeth and Jeffrey to try to help calm Aaron down and, as usual in these earlier novels, things do work out for everyone.

It's also interesting to note that as I'm reading some of these I notice they are not fluff. This one deals with a very major problem with children having to deal with parents undergoing a divorce and all the changes in the life that brings. There are also some children that will blame themselves for what is happening even though it might not be there fault at all.

It also shows the importance of having someone help and, if necessary, having that person to and get professional help.

These books are not just fluff.

Jessica getting caught up in an MLM scheme is probably one of the more realistic plotlines in this series (no sarcasm). And still very much relevant in the age of Younique and LuLaRoe.

Elizabeth was being such a snob towards Heather, but at least she admitted it in the end. The whole Aaron plot was so silly; I assume divorce rates are higher now than they were in the 80s, but no one I knew growing up went around punching people because their parents were divorcing, so... maybe Aaron's problem is actually that .

I had never read this title which has soccer star Aaron Dallas losing his temper all over school and Jessica becoming a salesperson for a beauty company with some sketchy products.

I loved that in this story we actually have some serious follow through with Aaron getting help for his anger issues and counseling with his father. That was so nice to see that the problems were actually addressed.

As always, I continue to enjoy my adventures with the Sweet Valley High series.

Chilled Aaron Dallas has become a rageoholic which worries St Liz (who judges his girlfriend for talking him down using baby talk) Lovely BF Jeffery French initially doesn't see anything wrong with bestie Aaron's behaviour, but when Aaron turns on him, Jeff is forced to admit that his friend needs help

I hate Liz so much! She's so judgmental! She's miles snobbier than Lila. And the tofu business Jessica starts up...I get that the company was dodgy but how out of date is it that she reads out a list of natural ingredients and Liz says it sounds gross and not to be trusted?? The only problem on that list was petroleum - that's not natural edible stuff!! And Jess said someone could eat the stuff!

For some reason I thought I remembered that Aaron was on steroids, hence his outbursts. But nope, not even close.

This book is memorable because of the infamous Tofu-Glo! 4 stars for that plot alone.

Also, remind me again why I liked Jeffrey as a kid? In the last book he called Elizabeth a stupid girl and in this one he called her a sentimental slob. What a sweetheart, eh?

So in other books, Aaron always seemed like a decent guy, but this one makes him out to be a Class A jerk! To everyone! Yes, he is a teenager going through a hard time but he should have realized his problems both sooner and more realistically. I couldn't even really feel bad for him because of how it was all portrayed. Almost only gave 2 stars due to this, especially when I add in how Jeffrey responds about him through most of the book. He actually annoyed me more than Aaron!
Not a favorite volume of the series.

Title: Out of Control
Series: Sweet Valley High #35
Author: Francine Pascal // Kate William
Overall Rating: 2 stars

I struggle to really be nice towards this book as I don't see why he was so angry all the time. Like, we get it, your parent's are getting divorced, that's a hard and horrible situation for a child to be in. But why weren't people supporting him rather than threatening to kick him of the team of the one thing he enjoys, or why were they enabling his anger? So basically the story is that Aaron used to be super friendly, but is suddenly a massive ball of anger and attacks everyone around him for no reason, including Jeffrey which Liz isn't happy about. So they try to help him....blah blah blah...happy ending as per usual.

I think this is just one of those books that I remembered being better than it actually was.

Aaron Dallas starts picking fights with other boys. He's obviously got a emotional problem. Coach Horner said if Aaron got into another fight he would be kicked of the soccer team. Everyone expresses concern but ultimately shrugs it off.

Aaron decides to picks a fight with his best friend Jeffrey which raises the question, will he get kicked off the team? I think this was the first time the book series addressed the issue of divorce from the perspective of the child affected by it. Unfortunately, the author did a poor job since everybody basically enabled Aaron throughout this episode.
