Awesome Book. I consider it Canon to the show. The idea for Marceline teaming up with BMO to face off pirates who stole something held dear to Princess Bubblegum is amazing!! I loved how the two saved the day with Marceline's Vampire Powers and BMO's smart thinking
Pirates have infiltrated the Candy Kingdom and stolen one of Princess Bubblegum’s prized possessions. Since the Candy Kingdom has no navy (sugar dissolves in water) she calls upon her good friend Marceline to retrieve it. With BMO, and his sonar abilities, by her side, Marceline embraces the Pirate Queen life and sets off on the dangerous quest to retrieve the treasure and save the day.
Marceline and BMO are easily two of my favourite Adventure Time characters, so I loved getting swept up in this stand-alone adventure with the two of them. The humour was perfect, and the pacing of the story was consistent, and there was always something new around the corner. Being Marceline, she faced every challenge head-on in her own unique way. Overall, this is a fun, quick read that would be enjoyable for long-time Adventure Time fans, or those dipping their toes in for the first time.
Nothing too interesting or illuminating in this quick side quest story, but I'm a sucker for Marceline and Bubblegum. It's fun to see their relationship shine through the story, especially now that the show has ended and confirmed their on and off again pairing. I also loved seeing BMO get involved in the action, although I didn't feel his/her voice came through as clearly as M and B's did.
While reading, I was struck by how refreshing it is to have this girly/non-girly pirate adventure, all of which feels cool and feminine in an unpatronizing way. The swashbuckling (sash-buckling?) ghost trio and the weird sexy sunglasses dragon were highlights as well. Adventure Time content consistently subverts standard storylines and tropes, finding creative, hilarious, unexpected solutions to truly bizarre problems at every turn. The characters are so empowered, imperfect, empathetic, and well-crafted. I can't help but come back to this series with every new story, knowing I'll love the world it continues to create and perfect.
2025 EDIT: A fun little Marceline comic, and great for Bubbline shippers, even though it is early days. BMO is a dear and a sweetie, too.
The cover is still a big fat liar.
Final Score: 3.5/5
Original Review:
AWWWWWWWWWW YEAH, an epic and fun adventure comic with Marceline the Vampire Queen as a pirate queen! (BMO is with her, too, not Finn and Jake - the cover lies. In fact they're not in the book at all). Here be ghosts, swords, skeletons, a dragon, a maze, antigravity, and a little Bubbline too! (They're still "just friends" at this stage, though).
'Adventure Time: Marceline the Pirate Queen' - proof that Marceline doesn't need to play music and carry her guitar/blade with her everywhere she goes to be awesome. She can achieve anything! for her Bonnibel Bubblegum! What stolen item has a desperate Bubblegum sent Marceline to retrieve for her from across the seas? Read and find out!
This is amazing!!!! The idea of Marceline teaming up with BMO to face dreaded Pirates to retrieve an item stolen from Princess Bubblegum is pure genius. The art truly captures the style of the Show. I read it over and over again! And I love every page of it. It's Canon taking place in Early Season 5 because mentioning of Finn's ocean fear and PB was wearing Marcy's rock t-shirt
Bubblegum and Marceline are two of my favorite characters from the show. So when I saw there was a graphic novel about pirates stealing something from Princess Bubblegum's chamber and her asking Marceline to retrieve it, I was all in.
Some of the books in the Adventure Time comics/graphic novel universe are hit or miss for me, but this one was great. A fun, engaging story, hilarious and adorable jokes and shenanigans, adventure, oddity, lovely artwork, and the always-amazing BMO all come together to make this one spot on.
Really enjoyed Williams' take on the universe and characters and how Sterling stuck closely to the original character designs but also created a whole new world of villains, monsters, and details with his own style. A great spin off that feels true to the show while still adding something new to the universe.
In this entry in the Adventure Time original graphic novel series, we see Marceline and BMO embark on a pirate themed high seas swashbuckling quest to return a stolen item to Princess Bubblegum. While pirates aren’t quite a new genre for the Adventure Time tie ins to tackle, I felt that the characterizations were quite nice here, with great interaction between the two fan favorites. Their piratical opponents were cutely designed as well, though sadly had nothing really to do once their theft had been completed, with the bulk of the story kind of meandering through an unconnected labyrinth. I would have liked to see more nautical adventures. Still, should be good fun for AT fans, especially Marceline and BMO lovers.
When pirates steal Princess Bubblegum's treasure, she asks Marceline to kindly retrieve it for her. With the help of a very eager BMO our favorite vampire sets sail to recoup the missing booty. There's not much to this one but Marceline battling foe after multi-colored foe (including a dragon wearing bitchin' sunglasses), and the pirates are vanquished a tad too easily for my taste, BUT the laugh I had when the "treasure" is revealed really made the trip worthwhile.
While this could seem like a silly one-off story at first, it still features the awesome team of Marceline and BMO who surprisingly work quite well together. We've seen this happen a few times across the different Adventure Time Comics but this title is a great celebration of their bond as friends and apparently adventuring companions.
Really nice and felt like a real episode starring tge awesome Marceline! A bit weird that the cover shows Finn and Jake when they don't have a part in this book though
just a really cute graphic novel! i loved marceline and BMO’s relationship in this, and the art is so wonderful. wish there was more interaction with princess bubblegum, finn, and jake though.
The art is amazing!! I love how the artist made the simple style of the animated show look so lively and interesting. Definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone.
Well, it’s a fun read. Although I think the timeline should be after PB gave the rock shirt to Maja, because PB and Marcy seem to have a better relationship after that.
Um, well...there's like a sentient Gameboy and a vampire (who has plastic ziploc baggies on hand), and they steal back a hair tie. I dunno...couldn't really get into it. Shrug.
