This book is a series of dream-like adventures of a young boy who is struggling to accept the changes in his family set off by the arrival of his little sister. It has been lovely to watch the main character’s development towards finally finding his place within his family. It is, however, not just about the young boy’s journey but his parents’ journey, too.

Thank you to NetGalley for a Kindle ARC of
Mirai.
I was captivated by the sweet cover photo and the interesting recap of the book's premise. I can relate to Kun's predicament except in a slightly different way.
I was super excited to have a sibling except I asked my parents for a brother, not a baby sister. Imagine my disappointment.
Due to the tender photo, I assumed (incorrectly) that Mirai was a graphic novel, which I think would have worked better, especially in terms of its fantasy element ...more

This story was presented as an anime film first and then later adapted into the light novel as presented with this book. Much like your name. or even manga adaptations such as Wolf Children (also a film by Hasoda) or the Boruto series, it’s not uncommon to have the books come after the film/series is released. It doesn’t always work, and despite enjoying the story, I do feel like Mirai is an example of one better seen rather than read.

Intermittently Charming
This is the novelization of an animated film, and basically follows a four year old's adjustment to the arrival of a new baby sister, and his larger family's adjustment as well. The boy has a series of magical adventures in the company of his now grown sister from the future.
The story is mild and predictable. I guess there are family dynamics lessons to be learned here, but they're pretty basic lessons. For me, while the tale had its charming moments, it was for the most p ...more

Ugh.
First off, I probably thought I was asking for the library to put the MOVIE on hold, but hit the wrong button and got this book.
This book was written POST-movie. The writing is overly simplistic and often reads like a storyboard FOR a movie.
The characters are sexist AF.
The main character is far too reminiscent of that irritating little shit, Caillou - an animated kids' show where Caillou is a horrible, tantrumy child who's long-suffering parents' only idea of discipline/boundaries is a heavy ...more

4 stars.
When I got into this story, right away I thought, "This would make an excellent Studio Ghibli film". It had that same wonderful and lovely feel to it. I don't really know what I had expected but it was far more enjoyable than I had thought I'd find it. While this was aimed for Adults, I feel that it's better suited for teenage audience. Mamoru Hasoda's Mirai is a charming tale of 4-year-old Kun learning to accept his new baby sister and learning other important life lessons along the way.
I remember enjoying the movie so I had to read the book. However, this story definitely translates better to screen than book. Reading from the perspective of a near-toddler is occasionally frustrating and Kun's journey is depicted in a very visual and metaphorical way that was beautiful onscreen but jumbled and confusing on the page.

I took only 4 hours to finish this book. In my opinion, this book is light-reading. Full of family relationship. Mostly between a brother and younger sister. There is something surreal in this book like time travelling out of nowhere. The description of the surroundings is detailed and easy to be interpreted. Overall, this book is worth buying. But only for those who didn't want a complex plot.

Unfortunately, I've yet to see the movie Mirai but found a copy of this book in the local library. I'd say this would do well to read with children to middle-grade students, as the reading level seems to me that way. It was enjoyable for a small read, and I'm looking forward to watching the magic of Hosoda unfold once more on the TV screen.

Very cute book that made, in tumblr talk, my ovaries explode. A lovely narrative that I’m sure will be helpful to children navigate the waters of becoming an older sibling. I’m a grown-up single child but it even made me look at things that exist in my life through a longer perspective. I’m really looking forward to seeing the movie, too, now.

This story was presented as an anime film first and then later adapted into the light novel as presented with this book which kind of unusual though I finished this in one sitting and totally can't wait to watch the movie.

This book is a weird blending of very young adult fiction and bizarre scenes of fantasy. With all the praise this I'm hearing for the movie, I read it to the end expecting some plot twist to make it all worthwhile. That didn't happen.

I really should stop purchasing films-turned-to-books. I’ve already seen the film and no longer have interesting in reading the book adaptation.

Kun is a 4 years old boy that lost the only son title and he’s not happy. Love for her new sister didn’t emerge at the first sight. Through the story Kun faces several problems all related with his family and their love. He questions their love for him and the feeling of replacement is constant. But, with every problem comes a solution and from that we learn a lot how things are in life. Kun is not exception.
