This book is literally the calm before the storm, but that also means it’s extremely boring and not necessary. It’s just to set up who will die in Earthquake: spoiler, it’s Olivia, because she has brown hair and she’s not a twin (only there is a continuity error and she shows up in book 8 of SVU not dead at all).
But I suppose I should tell you something about this book. Sigh. Jessica and Liz are turning 17 after having a junior year that has lasted at least 5 years or more. The twins plan separate parties to surprise one another, but when all their friends find out there are two parties on the same day (Friday, June 13th - also the birthday of the Olsen twins), they work to sabotage the separate parties and turn them into one big joint party at the Wakefield house.
And that’s it. That’s the large majority of the book. The last twenty pages are the earthquake (after Prince Albert the retriever foreshadowing it all book by barking like a lunatic) and the ghostwriters trying to set up the suspense of who will die. By the end it seems everyone will, and they probably should have, because what a cool ending to the series that would have been!
There are two subplots about side relationships (read: ones the twins are not in). Ken and Olivia fight because Olivia paints a nude portrait of Ken (from imagination, obviously she’s a virgin). Get the fuck over it, Ken. Good lord. This series was so afraid of genitals. Winston and Maria briefly split up because Winston spills to everyone that Maria still sleeps with a teddy bear. So? I’m 32 and I still sleep with a baby blanket. These teens and their non-problems are making my head hurt.

This one (and the other books around this storyline) really pack an emotional wallop especially if you've invested a lot of time into this series. 💔

Elizabeth, Enid, and Maria are sitting around trying to think of a birthday party that both the twins will like. They ask if Elizabeth has picked up a present yet, but she hasn’t thought of anything yet. Olvia is giving Ken a special present of a portrait of himself painted by her. Elizabeth decides they’ll rent the Beach Disco, hire a DJ, and invite everyone they know.
Jessica is with Lila thinking of the exact same thing. Lila suggests a auction but knows Liz won’t go for it. She hasn’t dated anyone after breaking up with Todd and Devin. Amy suggests a rock concert, but Jess knows Liz won’t like that either. They come up with something simple but elegant. They’ll have a jazz quartet under a rented tent with dancing on the beach.
We find out t who;e at the prom, Elizabeth manipulated Tood and Devon (Jessica) to think they were both there with her. Arron suggests that he get out of Sweet Valley atleast for the summer. While playing pool with Bruce, Winston, and Ken tease him about him still having time for them now that he’ll be going to Harvard. He seems a little more grim than usual,
The next show, Spike gives Randy control of the show, She makes fewer mistakes and he lets her talk. She takes the opportunity to play her rap tracks. A caller calls in with compliments and an issue about his girlfriend. He thinks his girlfriend is messing around because she says “he’s just a friend”. Randy probably plays “Just A Friend” for him by “Biz Markie” or “Mario”. The show goes by. Randy gets two phone calls which Spike says is big. He says Randy can do the show until Mickey comes back. Rany names her show “The Future Shock Show.”
The twins try to pump each other for information. Jessica tries to get out of Liz what she’s going to get her for a present (and has a suggestion of her own-a turquoise mini dress-. Liz tries to find out if Jessica is throwing a surprise party. Bruce gets home and doesn’t find an acceptance letter from Harvard. But they *have* to accept him after all his grandfather and great-grandfather went there. Mel (the owner of the Beach Disco) says that they’ll have to have a hefty down payment and guarantee at least 100 people. Liz agrees to it.
Lila and Jess skip to pay for the tent. Only Jess took Alice’s card and the salesperson sees the signatures are off. So, Lila has to pay for the tent. Olivia shows Ken her painting.. It’s of him in the nude. They have a full-blown argument over rights. Olivia thinks she as the artist has the right to show it to whomever she wants. Ken as the subject says it’s an invasion of his privacy.-Gotta agree with Ken on this one-. Jessica gives Lila the number for the catering, Elizabeth does the same to Enid for the party invitations. While at the post office, they run into Devon. Liz invites him to the party but after he leaves he’s upset she didn’t invite him as her date (even though he knows they’re just friends). Lila realizes (and tells Amy) that both twins are throwing the other surprise parties. Bruce finds out Ranny Ayala got rejected from Harvard. If she got rejected he doesn’t have a snowball's chance.
Maria and Olivia keep Liz from spending a fortune on food and party favors. Olivia is acting surly and finally tells them about the problem she has with Ken. Liz tells her she needs to decide if putting the portrait in the show will be worth losing Ken. Maria is with Enid later when Lila calls and says she’s come up with “The Plan” that will allow them to be in two different places at once. She’ll need there help and some of the others.
Enid tells Todd about the plan whose conflicts if he wants to go to either or both of the twins party. He does want Liz as a friend but it’ll hurt too much to see her now. Olivia goes to see Ken and they end up having another argument about the portrait. Ken tries to make Olivia see sense that he’ll be a joke if they see that portrait (hmm does he really have that little to see). But Olivia doesn’t believe in reputation. So, he ends up giving her an ultimatum either the picture goes or he does.
At school, Jessica tries to talk to Lila and Amy about the party, but Lila reminds her of the money she owes her. They give her noncommital answers when she asks questions and tell her they have other plans when she asks them to help her plan the party. But Jessica realizes they must be planning something to do with the party. Elizabeth also tries to get Maria, Olivia, and Enid to go with her shopping but they all say they have to study. She keeps picking days but each day she picks her friends say their busy with school stuff. Bruce finally gets a response from Howard. It’s a rejection letter. He’s been rejected from all the other schools he applied to as well and he didn’t bother to apply to a “safe” school.
Steven and Billie show up on the twin's birthday. They both get CDS as gifts (but different ones). Devon sits in class wondering what to get Liz. He wants to get her an armful of roses and a ring but he knows he has to keep it in the “friend” realm. Jessica and Lila have to set up the tent on the beach. They’re stopped by two guys who turn out to be the beach patrol and tell them if there’s going to be more than ten people they need a permit or the party’s off. When Liz and Enid go to check on the party, its booked by a movie star. Then the cellist calls Lila and cancels. Jessica thinks Lila is trying to sabotage her party. Just then they experience a small earthquake. Lila and Jessica leave to go try to salvage the party. Jessica still not wanting to admit defeat.
Enid and Liz experience the same earthquake on the ride home. When they get there everyone is there for their surprise party. Alice and Ned give Jessica and Elizabeth a new, white, jeep. Winston and Maria make up from him earlier telling the secret she sleeps with an old teddy bear. Bruce announces at the party that he’ll be going to Sweet Valley University. They run out of ice and Winston goes to make an ice run. Billie tho goes for him. Meanwhile, Prince Albert has been ansty all day. Olivia is looking for Ken but can’t find him. She has the portrait with her.
Olivia finds Ken outside and gives him a redone painting of just his head and shoulders. She says she’ll never show anyone the other one. She just couldn’t destroy it but she will if she has to. Ken says he wants her to put the new one in the art show and give it to him after. The other she can do what she wants with. Then he makes her promise they’ll never fight again and that she’ll love him forever.
Steven interrupts Jessica and tells her he needs to go get Billie whose car has died. Jessica doesn’t want to give up the keys. She wants to be the first to drive her new car. She decides to go with Steven. Devon sees Todd talking to Liz and it clears the confusion in his mind to give her the bland gift he bought her. Todd meanwhile is telling Liz he’s going to North Carolina for the summer for a baskeball scholarship. They say their final goodbyes. Devon gives Liz a book called Techniques of Journalism. They start to argue about the gifts meaning. Maria and Annie try to interfere but Liz tells them it's ok. They continue to argue and Liz is just about to slap him when another earthquake hits.
Jessica and Steve hit a telephone pole. The roof of the house is torn to pieces. Winston rushes to the house to find out if Maria and Annie who were trapped in the kitchen survived. Lila and Toodd are in the bathroom with the door jammed.
My Thoughts:
Ok, Ok. I didn’t do the end justice, but all the students who went to the house are either outside or inside and it’s up in the air which are okay and which aren’t is how it’s left off. I didn’t think I’d have any comments on this one. I had nothing for Elizabeth and Jessica planning each other's parties. Tho I did find it hard to believe that someone at school who’d gotten an invitation to each didn’t come up to one of the twins in confusion and ask something like “So you're having two parties on the same day?” COME ON! This is Sweet Valley High. Since when do they know how to keep secrets? But then I did have a thought. Was Olivia HIGH on paint fumes or something because NO! Being an artist does NOT give you the right to paint someone ANYONE naked without their PREMISSION and entire it in an art show. I found this notion so absurd that she would get MAD over this. So, she’d be ok with Ken entering a nude picture of her in an art show? I know Ken probably can’t draw but what he should have done was say ok so let me enter one of you in the show? Then she actually compares him to the models she draws in the nude. When I went to art college (well I often think of that way loosely) we had models like that in a class about figure drawing. But I’m pretty sure they volunteered. I can’t say fo sure but I’m sure they were probably even PAID. The point is they WANTED to do it. Then I don’t know about how other schools do it but the models we had were FEMALE and often on the “thick” side. NO MALES! And I’m pretty sure there was a reason for that had to do with being appropriate. It’s probably more appropriate to have a naked female pose than a male because males .. well.. Let's just say our parts don’t “extend” but then again this was just the college I went to. I have no doubt there are male models that pose for students in art classes that are comfortable with their bodies and can somehow keep “that” in check as they’re being drawn. I just couldn’t believe Olivia acted so dumb and couldn’t see the logic in this. I think there was an episode on Family M atters were Myra does a nude painting of Steve. I thought what was going to happen was she was just gonna change the head and make it had a different face and hair color as a compromise. Yes, some men do have beautiful bodies. I think Jordan Calloway is one of the finest, men on the planant. His body when he was on Black Lightning was just RIDICULOUS!!!! But that doesn't mean, I can decide one day to "compliment" him by one day deciding I'm going to do a naked sketch or painting on him and then posting it on line. That would be the OPPOSITE of complimenting him. It would be disrespecting him. Then he'd probably hit me sue me with a nice fat amount and I'd have to take the picture down. But it's sad to saw that today it IS like that. People today just do whatever they damn well want to and its because they have NO CONSEQUENCES! I don't even need to tell you why this is and who started it. Ken had ever right to be furious! If Olivia can make a portrait and show it to all the students, what's to say in the future she won't think it's "her right" to when they do have sex to take pictures of Ken on her phone and then show them around to all her friends?

Well here I am sobbing at 2 am just like when I first read this when I was around 15.

I loved this book and longed for it years after I had lost it. Recently I finally reread it. I loved the twins' and then their friends planning and mini sidestories. Warning: it's cliff hanger. Don't start reading till you have the other two books of this sequence. This is the only carefree book of the sequence and last one of SVH.
