This is the first of Aurelio Rico Lopez III’s works that I have had the pleasure of reading and I am duly impressed.
This was just fun to read!
Not the Forgiving Kind starts out with a delightful bang! And a dead body. From there, Lopez leads the reader through a tale of Manananggal, Santilmo, and other beings from Philippine folklore in this completely entertaining and thoroughly engrossing Filipino Urban Fantasy.
Again, such a fun read.
Lopez’s irreverence and humor in both narration and characterization is an absolute pleasure to experience. I laughed. I cringed. I sometimes did both simultaneously. Lopez’s clever writing style keeps the story moving at a steady pace yet sacrifices nothing in the telling.
And what a story it is!
Did I mention that this is a fun story to read?
On a personal note, since Filipino Folklore and sociology is outside my general knowledge base, the content was fresh, the story wholly original, the characters wonderfully engaging.
So much fun to read.
If you’re looking for a fun, fresh read with dark humor, irreverent characters, and plenty of action, look no further!

Not the Forgiving Kind is a fast paced magic realism-horror, masquerading modern day Philippine lore. The death of one of their own tosses a final showdown amongst the many creatures shadowing the streets; a bloody, action-packed ride that reads like an B-rated NCSI episode. Recommended for fans of action-based horror!
