This first novel was on my bookshelf for a couple of years, and I have to say that the cover art influenced me to buy it. So I finally tried to read it. I probably should have left it unread.

Anob, is a space fighter pilot of the highly advanced Society, that rules Earth and neighboring space. She is on a routine patrol with two other pilots when her ship is destroyed. When she wakes up she finds herself on Beta, a planet inhabited by people who left Earth hundreds of years before and have taken a different evolutionary track, giving up on many forms of technology, living a simple life, but also a life where women and men have set roles, the men to protect, and where nudity is frowned upon. In the Society, men and women are not allowed intimate conduct and children are actually clones. Only a select 5 percent of the population to all of the work while the rest live off of the 5 percent who fight and take care of others

Anod is cared for by Nick, the father of the Prime Minister of Beta, Bradley SanGiacomo.

Meanwhile, the Xorak, another space race seems to be searching the planet for her. It seems that her ship was destroyed by a traitor Zitger, and he means to see her dead.

Anod eventually learns about sex from a couple of inhabitants of Beta, in violation of Society law and gets pregnant. Meanwhile the Xorak attempts to find her get more and more violent, prompting Bradley to show her a Xorak intercepter (space fighter, which Anod uses to try to get a signal to her Society and to fight the Xorak in space. The flight battle scenes are actually very good.

All of these events take ungodly long to progress and the book is way too long.
