What if you discovered that those closest to you were not who they seemed?
Tech sleuth Sophie Ang, her lovable dog Ginger, and her partner, Jake Dunn, tackle a new case involving a famous hula festival on the Big Island--but that's only one of the hot situations demanding Sophie's attention. Repercussions from the past and the return of a deadly relative threaten to tear apart the fragile life Sophie's trying to build. Everyone around her seems to want more from Sophie than she can give, and one of them plans to take her life.
In the midst of a volcano of conflicting agendas, Sophie must find a way to truth, victory and freedom.
Toby Neal was raised on Kauai in Hawaii. She wrote and illustrated her first story at age 5. After initially majoring in journalism, she eventually settled on mental health as a career and loves her work, saying, “I’m endlessly fascinated with people’s stories.”
Toby credits her counseling background in adding depth to her characters–from the villains to Lei Texeira, the courageous and vulnerable heroine in the Lei Crime Series, to the wounds and psychological implications of the heroes of the Scorch Series.
Can these characters just become real people? Please? Sophie Ang has been one of my very favorite characters for several years, since making her debut in the Lei Crime series. In the Paradise Crime series, she is definitely shining. She is learning so much about herself and how to interact with people and it's so endearing to read.
Wired Fear takes place not terribly long after the events of Wired Secret. Sophie has moved on with Jake, and they are opening a branch of Security Solutions in Hilo. They are adjusting to many things - new homes, new office and staff, new locations, and new relationship dynamics.
There are a couple themes being explored in this book. One I won't get into because spoilers. Another is a take on good vs evil - if someone does evil to bring about good in the long term, is that okay? And also if someone does good for evil reasons, what does that mean? Is life as clear cut as "good" vs "evil" or are things carried out in murky shades of gray? And now I'm feeling like the ever present vog was intentional, to represent the shades of gray coloring everything on the island...
Anyway, Sophie. Jake. Alika. Connor. Did you think the matter was settled? It seems to be, in the end. But there are big changes coming so who knows what will happen?
This book has a more introspective Sophie than ass-kicking Sophie, but that's okay. She is not a machine designed to rule the computer world and fight. She is a human and still must come to terms with what that means. Jake does plenty to make up for it. And we see familiar faces and old enemies again. While one storyline is resolved, I am sure this is not nearly the end of another.
Very thrilling story. The story is a continuation of a series, but a complete stand alone all by itself. Sophie was a brilliant character with multiple layers and the commencement of her life with Jake is beautifully brought out. But it was the plot which kept me hooked. A complex plot with sudden twists and turns which just could not guessed was brought out so beautifully and left me amazed. Enjoyed reading the story.
Omg, Sophie talk about drama, drama, drama but then it wouldn’t be a Sophie story without the drama and the action always an abundance of both. The beginning was great and set the scene for the story, the progression through had my anxiety pitching to extreme levels leading to the crescendo near the end and then balancing out yes that’s right Sophie’s life seemed to really balance out at the end now I realize with this being a Sophie Ang story that it may all turn upside down again but I really liked the ending it felt right, it felt perfect for Sophie.
I really felt like by the end Sophie had pretty much compartmentalized most of her life and everyone in it has a place and more importantly Sophie is happy I love how little things were tied up in this story and threads were ended but also focuses shifted to new threads and it will be interesting to see where these lead I am still very exciting, anxious regarding Sophie's mother and what her real plan is, how this will all play out it seriously has me worried even though I know Sophie has a solid team around her her Mother is a serious threat to watch out for.
Wired Fear (Paradise Crime Book #8) by Toby Neal is electric! This novel may be read as a stand alone but to fully understand the characters as well as the impassioned feelings between the characters, it should be read in the order in which it was written. It will totally change your perspective on this novel!
Super Tech Sleuth Sophie Ang & partner Jake Dunn have opened a new branch office of Security Solutions on the Big Island. Sophie is desperately working on living a “normal” live after all she’s been through and Jake is doing his best to support her. Things are going almost too smoothly. They should have known that would be a short term situation! Quickly everything changes. There are major crises all around. The biggest has to with Sophie and choices she must make that will determine the course of her future.
As always, Neal has provided her readers with an excellent plot that keeps you engaged from start to finish. Her characters are complex with none being more so than Sophie! With the setting being the gorgeous background of Hawaii, who would ever complain? Neal always teaches her readers a little more about the Islands, it’s culture and its people.
I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
Returning to Maui, Sophie reunites with Jake and asks him to be her lover...he agrees as long as they are both exclusive. Soon afterwards Connor opens a new branch of Security Solutions where he and Sophie are free to choose the cases they handle. Things go well for a while, until Sophie makes a life-changing discovery and has to make a vital decision regarding which direction her life will now move in. Outside influences include Pim Wat, Sophie's evil mother and a violent upheaval in the Chang crime dynasty from previous novels. As usual Toby Neal's brilliant sure-to-be-bestseller is an outstanding development of her wonderful character Sophie Ang and the intense interaction between, Sophie, Jake, Aliki, her father and even Terence Chang and others of his entourage in a spectacular edge-of-your-seat thriller, that deserves 10 starts out of 5! Grab a copy today and catch up on previous novels in the series if you haven't enjoyed them all yet - satisfaction is guaranteed!
Author Toby Neal has written an original fast paced story with Wired Fear, filled with twists, turns, threats and triumph. Her character, Sophie Ang, a tech sleuth that swears creatively in Thai, continues her journey of self-discovery and healing amidst an investigation to uncover a possible crime involving a hula festival on Big Island.
Sophie again partners with her affectionate dog, Ginger, and work associate and lover, Jake. Filled with explosive situations, dangerous deranged criminals, a relative with suspect intentions and three men that she has loved, Sophie moves forward to untangle the threads of the investigation and her heart.
Neal’s consistently creates compelling and complex personalities for her characters, captivating you with their idiosyncrasies, charisma, and intelligence.
As with all Neal’s stories, there are multiple layers for you to unwrap in her characters, enough adventure in the sub-stories that keep you captivated until the last page and all together she leaves you craving the next installment in the series.
What a roller coaster ride! Once again Toby Neal has written a winner! I loved this book so much and hated for it to end! The characters we all love (and some we hate), make appearances in this book and omg the story just grabs you and won’t let go! There are surprises that some may not have seen coming. There is so much that happens in this book that I just can’t stop thinking about it! This is one book you won’t want to miss out on! If you love a good love triangle and if you love twists and turns in a book and action and suspense this is the book for you!
I received an advance copy of this 8th book in the series. Sophie just gets better and better and… more complicated! With the Changs after her, Pim Wat in the background, she’s also juggling (trying to figure out!) her love life. I think I had a couple of teeny heart attacks during this one, but that’s become the norm for this Wired series. Thrill a minute, danger around every corner and in every doorway, more complications in a pretty troubled life. Phew!!! But… just maybe Sophie’s dark and disturbing side is about to be relegated to a far corner of her psyche??? Was happy to have more of Doc Wilson in this one. I love Doc Wilson!
Wired Fear by Toby Neal Another fine story about Sophie Ang and her partner/boyfriend Jake Dunn and Security Solutions owner Sheldon Hamilton aka Collin. They are hired to investigate missing funds meant for the annual Merrie Monarch Festival held in Hilo Hawaii. Enter Sophie's nemesis Alan's Chang who had finally been tried and convicted due to her testimony and escapes with the priority purpose to avenge by killing Sophie and Jake. Another storyline enters involving a love triangle and expected baby arrival (whose baby is it)? Are you excited yet? I don't want to give any spoilers but this is a page turner to the end which comes too soon in my opinion. Will Sophie be safe? How many times can she survive the attacks made on her life? Will Akane find and kill Sophie? Will he kill Jake? Who is the baby daddy? What about Sheldon/Collin who still loves Sophie unconditionally. How can a girl decide? oh, to have such problems ....
Sophie and her trio of dedicated men are faced with new challenges, personal and career. A new client has a case with ties to someone from Sophie's past, and her friend Lei Texeira. The personal struggles she deals with are set for another round with Dr. Wilson, and the newest life changing news might be what settles Sophie. A few moments I had to catch my breath and remember that Neal is giving Sophie moments of enrichment, courage and maturity that she will need to embrace her changes. And other times I wanted to cry for her mess of emotions. This is definitely a series to be read in order, the characters are deeply developed in history and emotions. I was fortunate enough to receive an early copy, my review was unbiased and voluntarily.
As Sophie is recovering from yet another physical attack, she realizes she might be pregnant-but who is the father, Alika or Jake? The Chang she testified against & was sent to prison, escaped on the way and Sophie is at the top of his revenge list. An exciting read with lots of action.
Wow! Sophie is back, and I really enjoyed following her again as she navigates her world of relationships. Who will win her - Alika, Connor, or Jake? What will we learn about the enigma that is Pim Wat? Can Dr. Wilson help her with the many dilemmas she faces? Surprises abound in this must read continuation of the Wired series. It really should be picked up as a film script…it’s that good!
Sophie and her dog Ginger and partner Jake are off again solving another mystery. An amazing mystery read that has you gripped and you’re lost in the story. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
Romance, passion, heartache, anger, revenge, you'll find it all in this continuing story of Sophie. Toby has done it again!! This book lets the reader see another side of Sophie that we haven't seen before! The whole book contains plot twists & turns that you cant put the book down! I'm never let down when I read Toby's books! Now, to wait fir the next installment!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this Paradise Crime series book. As all books in the series this is packed with action and some unexpected plot twists as well. Also as previous books in the series it’s impossible to put it down once you immerse into Sophies world. Also you get to learn something about Hawaiian culture as well. As always - can’t wait for the next book to be released.
Tension builds as situations draw down. I didn't like whenever I had to put the book aside. I was there sharing experiences with Sophie, Jake, Connor and Alika.
I finished my arc of this book in one day it was that good. From the beginning we start off with a bang and just continues on from there. With sophie dealing with personal issues and her mom and still trying to sort her feelings for jake and her feelings of guilt over alika.
I have read all in the Paradise Crime Series. WOW. That's all I can say. Toby! You left me on the edge of my seat yet again!! Incredible. She leaves you wanting more. I just returned from Oahu, Waikiki specifically, & saw it through her eyes. Wonderful series.I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes adventure, fun & lots of romance. Excellent writing, with wonderful detail. Thank you for Amor gr8 read Toby!!.
Toby!! You did it again! You left me hanging. Excellent read, gr8 story, many twists & turns. Did not see the 3-way romantic interest. This whole Paradise Crime Series has been a wonderful read. Can hardly wait for November & the new book. Recommended for anyone who is interested in romance, mystery & twists & turns. Thanks Toby!!
Holy cats, can it get any better. Sophie is a magnet for trouble. Jake and her end up tying loose strings in this page turner. With her personal issues, the Chang's and Pim Wat, nobody is safe. Absolutely fantastic and will leave you waiting on the edge of your seat for the next installment.
Another amazing Toby Neal book. In this one Sophie grows and matures so much. I love how much she has learned about herself and changed since the first book. This book is more about life than adventure, but it is currently my new favorite! Each Sophie book is better than the last. I eagerly look forward to what happens next! Thanks for all great entertainment!
You will never get bored and keep the book down. Full of action!! I keep wanting more of these characters! This book in the Wired series is filled with action, not only around Sophie, but also with the Changs and Pim Wat. There are a lot of developments in Sophie's personal life and they keep the book in constant motion. I fell in love with Sophie long ago, when she started with Lei. I have always related to her because of the way Toby Neal describes her work, her struggle with depression, her dilemma between the three men in her life, and her confusion when she faces a crossroad. Toby's writing makes it feel real and gives you a door into their world, you're not just a reader, you're there. Whether you're with Sophie or you are Sophie is left up to you, but you have both choices. Every time she fights against something or someone, you can feel the struggle inside. This is my first 5 star review for the Wired series (others were 4) because unlike other books, I quite liked this ending. I was always disappointed in Sophie's choice among the three men at the end of each book as I was biased towards one of them, but this time, though it wasn't him, the ending made me mushy and happy. :D I was an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Neal is a gifted writer, has good story lines. Each series makes you want to read the next series. I cannot put the book down. Sophie finds herself dealing with a mother whom she finds out is a spy with a secret organization, who wants Sophie to join her, she's dealing with the paternity of her baby among the three men she cares about ,but finally realize which one she loves and also dealing with a psychopath from her past.
WIRED FEAR Cousins that owe favors to one another, when one is a District Attorney, and the other of crime. Justify’s by saying the family needs you. With tools Akane now feels in power once again after the trial, and revenge the name of the game. The list, with the female investigator at the top, and her partner. The Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, her firm gives a grant to it each year, has come to the new security offices of Sophie and Jake’s. Discrete with them being outsiders to look at missing money. For Sophie, she still has revenge against her mother. In this she becomes more real, and readers will like that. How does Jake play into this role, we hope permentaly. For Jake, his love is strong, and always goes that extra for her. The story is real, captivating, page turner, full of action, the author has gone beyond giving us another drama filled story. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
I loved this continuation in the Paradise Crime Series. Sophie is such an amazing character and the entire story has answered a few threads along the way. Thank goodness Connor finally figured things out! And that dastardly Pim Wat, good old mom, haha. Ugh. This story was well put together, well thought out, even though Ms. Neal said she wrote it off the cuff it reads as a completely believable and thoroughly interesting book I am so greedy, I need the next book, SOON! Of course I recommend it and all the rest of her books as well.
Omg! I love, love, LOVE Toby Neal!!! This book is everything that I hoped and so much more!! Toby did an outstanding job again. After surviving yet another attempt on her life, Sophie finds that life has thrown her another curve and what a curve it is! She finally realizes with whom her heart lies and I’m beyond excited about her choice! Her mother, while somewhat useful but not without a price, remains an issue but Sophie refuses to let her barge into her life and attempt to control her. Things are changing for Sophie and she may finally be well on her way to a long deserved healing path. I’m so super excited for Sophie and where her new journey takes her. I can’t wait for her next adventure!
This amazing chapter of Sophie’s life is totally unexpected! I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting! It’s full of the action and suspense we’ve come to know and love about Toby Neal’s writing. But this one took me by surprise. Sophie has the same issues with her three men, and the Chang’s and her Mom, (families, we all have them), but now there’s something else in the mix! You’ll just have to read the book to find out! I am an arc reader, but this review is mine.
This series gets better and better with each book. The plot flows easily and the reader is anxious to see what will happen to Sophie, Jake, Alika and Connor. Just when it looks like there will be a resolution there is a plot twist. Can't wait for the next book. The entire series is worth reading more than once.
