This was ok. I didn’t love this book even though I loved the premise. There was something missing in the execution. It felt rushed to me and there were sentences that didn’t make any sense. I didn’t feel the love between them.

Sweet story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thing that struck me about this story was the difference in the female lead from traditional females in these type of stories. I love the fact that Adeline was a widow, and a young one at that, who knew what she wanted and was not on the hunt for a man.
She is feisty and speaks her mind, is not afraid of not looking perfect, and has a perfect plan for her life.
But I also love Lyon and his resolve to make sure she becomes his. I love that the author di
A good story , likeable characters, but for some reason I found it hard to stay focused on the story .
It felt a little jumpy and didn’t flow as easily as I hoped , please allow for the fact this is a personal thing and may be great for you .
I didn’t stop me from enjoying the general storyline or the plot of the book , so please bare this in mind .
I’ve read the author before and her books have been wonderful .
I look forward to reading more from her .
I loved this synopsis and was quite eager to jump into this story. Sadly, I struggled right from the start.
Adeline and Lyon are okay. They’re both decent and loyal people...they’re just boring as hell. It seemed like they just butted heads every time they met and nothing was ever accomplished. I couldn’t see the jump from irritation to lust to love. The other widows do have promise, but I’m not sure their stories will be for me
Plot wise, it was fairly lackluster. The writing was filled with pa
Adeline, Lady Wake, is the main character of this story. A young widow from a loveless marriage and determined to stand on her own two feet. She is a strong woman; but, also sensitive and almost beaten down by her husband when she is unable to produce an heir for him and his title. She is about 21 years old, so pretty young. Her late husband made her stay at his country estate, so she hadn't been in London in quite a few years.
When she leaves the country and moves back to London; she makes the
This is the first book in the new First Comes Love series and it does a nice job of introducing the ladies and setting up the premise of the series. We learn just enough about each of the ladies who will be featured in the later books to be intrigued by them and to want to read their books. The writing was good, the storyline had great potential, but was just a tad on the blah side. Also, I don’t think we ev
The Earl Next Door is the first book in the First Comes Love series by Amelia Grey. The series revolves around three young widows who lost their husbands at sea when the ship they were on went down. They have come together to start a school for the girls who lost their fathers in that same shipwreck.
This is the first of the widow's stories. Adeline, Dowager Countess of Wake was in a loveless marriage and the main thing she felt when she heard her husband was dead, was relief. She enjoys having h
The Earl Next Door is the first in a new series by Amelia Grey, and the first book by her that I've read. This historical romance is created on a unique premise of Adeline Wake, a widowed countess who is newly moved to a home where she is also starting up a boarding school for young “unfortunate” girls when she meets neighbor Lyon Marksworth, Earl of Lyonwood, in a not so “meet-cute” exchange. What transpires between them in this initial meeting shows the young Earl that Lady Wake is a feisty an ...more
Great opening scene!
I found that the opening scenes involving Adeline, Dowager Countess of Wake, Lord Lyonwood the rather delicious future Marquis of Marksworth, a case of a mistaken use of a house and a fabulous crimson corset were hilarious.
The scene where Adeline is so annoyed by carriages blocking her doorstep, as it were, where she confronts Lord Lyonwood and his cronies adds further amusement.
Adeline in full flight is brilliant.
A definite five stars for these amusing interludes but to my
OH wow, what an amazing tale! Dynamite High 5 Stars for this tale! This is a new author to me and I must admit she has blown me away with her writing! Truly impeccable! Lady Adeline, a widow, with the help of her two widow friends start a boarding school for unfortunate girls to help teach them how to sew and other useful tasks in order to help them learn a trade to avoid a life of poverty. There is just one problem, her school sits next to the Marquis, Lord Lyonwood who at first mistakes her an ...more
This is a quick read about a widow who keeps running into her neighbor in the most inappropriate ways. You can fly through the book fairly quickly and it will keep you entertained throughout. Nothing spectacular, but a fun and enjoyable read.
Another series to look out for.
A widow finally finds her wings. Stowed away from the world following her marriage and being married to a disinterested and unkind man takes a toll on Adeline. When her husband dies and she is out of mourning, she finds her purpose in life.
She buys a house and starts a boarding school for underprivileged girls along with her two friends. Only, her neighbour is an interesting man and there is a growing attraction that neither can ignore.
In a world where historical romances are sometimes redundant, Amelia Grey brings a breath of fresh air to the genre with The Earl Next Door, book one in her First Comes Love Series. The premise of the book focuses on three widows who have decided to start a boarding school to help daughters of men who were killed in the same shipwreck that killed their husbands. In doing so, they hope to fill a need by giving these girls the tools of a trade and thus the ability to care for themselves, and possi ...more
A fun, passionate romance to heat up your summer! This book was charming, delightful and sizzling! Regency Romances have really evolved over the years, and I enjoy them more and more! Adeline is a spirited young widow, who lives next door the Lord Lyonwood. The first time they meet, he thinks that she is about to open up a house of ill repute in their London neighborhood, and it doesn't help that she greets him wearing a red corset. Not great. Not even good. Very mediocre. The writing style was the main problem. Some odd Americanisms and anachronistic phrasing, some weird places where I wasn't sure who was doing what to whom, and far too much time spent puttering around in Adeline's head, rehashing everything we've already been told before.
That was the second problem. So much telling and not enough showing. The third problem was how these two magically sensed how the other felt. Constantly. No one has that good a connection
This was excellent, the author's style is really coming into its own - the dialogue was witty, fun and original, the characters were sparking, but also deep and interesting and the story flowed smoothly. I wholeheartedly recommend!
This was a most entertaining read. The encounters between Adeline, Countess of Wake and Lyon Marksworth were very amusing. Even though they were attracted to each other Adeline’s experiences with her first marriage hindered her from entering into anything more meaningful. The addition of a school for needy girls provided an interesting extra. I enjoyed the meetings with her two friends, Julia and Brina. When Adeline becomes a widow, after being in a loveless marriage, she vows to remain one. Lyon is a bachelor looking for love before marriage. When the two end up living next door to one another sparks fly, but will wedding bells ring?
From page one, the opening scene when the hero and heroine meet, I was in for the romance ride. They have chemistry and banter - which is my yardstick for romances - and it climbs as the story continues
This is a lovely and well written historical romance. I'm a fan of Regency romance, grew up reading Georgette Heyer, and I can say this one is a very good one.
I was hooked since the first pages, I really liked the "comedy of errors" with Lyon thinking that Adeline is a maitresse and Adeline wearing something not suitable for a recently widowed lady. It made me laugh and appreciated how it was written and how the characters were introduced.
I think that the characters are the main force in this bo
