A sudden aerial invasion of Earth by aliens and machine life forms brought humanity to the brink of extinction. The number of human survivors who took refuge on the moon to organize a counterattack used an army to reclaim Earth. However, the war reached a stalemate for thousands of years. In turn, humanity deployed a new unit of the army as the ultimate weapon i.e. the YoRHA army.

YoRHA models 2B and 9S were fielded as part of a reconnaissance force to investigate local Machine behavior and assist local Resistance forces. During their time on Earth, 2B and 9S suppressed hostile Machine Lifeforms, making contact with other characters present in the world. These included local Resistance leader Lily; Devola and Popola, a pair of ancient twin androids; Pascal, the pacifist leader of a non-hostile Machine collective; Adam and Eve, twin humanoid avatars from the Machine Network; A2, a member of the evil YoRHA; and Emil, the being around which Pascal formed his village.

What happens when man-made mechanical robots evolve? That's what happens in this series, interestingly these mechanical robots are very interested in human habits and learn them for themselves: sadness, disappointment, love, joy, learning and hope. Until the combined essence of human-like mechanical robots and automata emerges: Adam and Eve. Adam is very interested in humans and automata, he desires to be like them and wants to coexist, but it is difficult for 2B and 9S as protagonists to accept. Until the death of him brother Eve made Adam understand the meaning of sadness, depression and disappointment, why would he live in this world if he was alone, until the sadness caused him to become evil and want to move everything.

Perhaps this is a picture of the future where mechanical robots have complex systems that are able to make their own wishes and learn a lot until they evolve similar to humans. Interestingly, YoRHA automata, which are also actually man-made complex mechanics made to help humans take over the earth from alien-made mechanical robots, also seem to have feelings, but because of a doctrine that they should not feel it as automata, that's what Adam asked from mechanical evolution is a prologue that is quite interesting in the future. And at the end of the story 9S seems to have caught a virus when he hacked Adam, in the block chain data of his memory there is a wish from a mysterious mechanical robot, with two red-haired girls I think they are Trojan viruses xD

May the glory of man live forever.

I got more out of this than I expected to, actually. It doesn’t have as much art as I was expecting, which is both a blessing and a curse. In addition to the art and two short stories (both also included in Short Story Long but translated much better here), there are maps of all of the areas in the game and 9S’ notes on how to navigate them; 9S’ and Pod 153’s analyses of various locales, characters, and events; bios of the major characters; and in depth info on machine specs and fish species. So while it doesn’t have lots of delicious art, it does offer some fun supplemental stuff and potentially useful info on where to fish and how to access certain areas.

Those are times I wished I knew japanese. However, seeing all those pictures and drawings from the game made me understand the post-apocalyptic world of NieR:Automata a little bit more.I really wouldn't think possible to fall more in love with this game. The wonderful depictions of the ruined buildings, the steampunk/futurist architecture, the analysis(maybe?) of each character's design and battle patterns is truly jaw-dropping.

Beautiful book with some helpful bits of information (I discovered a secret spot thanks to the notes), written in a very interesting and unique format.
I really enjoyed reading more about this world, especially through the two short stories.
I wish it had more illustrations, and I'm really looking forward to volume 2!

Just a warning, but if you've also read Shirt Story Long, both stories included in the World Guide are from it.

Loved that this was presented to us as a report given by 2B and 9S. It really makes it fit in with the rest of the game. I'll definitely be looking into the second volume of this at some point!

Very good! Not exactly a normal book as there were very few words, but the short stories at the beginning and end were both very good. Also all the pictures and diagrams were bangers
