The return of U.S. Marshal Jack Slade, a hell-raising cowboy who'll stop at nothing for revenge.

Hell does indeed exist. U.S. Deputy Marshal Slade can attest to that, and it's in Gehenna, Oklahoma Territory. On any given day there, someone's liable to break the law. Now, two heartless honchos are fighting over the place. And all the decent townspeople have to pray for their lives. The thing is, both tycoons want Slade as their pawn against the other, but the lawdog works for no one. In this battle, it's impossible to know whose side anyone's on. And Slade must be at the ready, or else lose the war.

Third in a series, I'd read the first two something like fifteen years ago and enjoyed them. It's nice to rediscover this series and realize it has gone on quite a bit further.

Jack Slade is now a lawman under Judge Dennison. He is sent to the town of Gehenna, Oklahoma, to find out why there is so much rustling, homestead stealing, murder, and just general mayhem going on and report back to the Judge. Well, Slade can't see a problem without trying to fix it. So he takes on as one man the job of an army of law men.

Brandt does a great job of keeping things realistic. Slade is capable, but he's no infallible superhero. He finds a town controlled by two rival villains, the law long since chased out. Slade is determined to restore law and order and bring the two leaders to account. The tactics he employs are clever and well-considered. I really enjoyed learning of the characters of the various people Slade comes across. So much of the dialogue was witty and even humorous. This is a great addition to the series. Now I have to keep my eyes open for the fourth one.

I love Westerns, it's a fact.
This ranks up there with my favourite authors western wise.
Deputy Marshall Jack Slade is an ex shootist/gambler who now fights for good though he sometimes crosses the line to get his results.
Two warring factions in a town where the civilians are suffering.
Slade comes in to sort things out.
One man against two armies. The body count piles up as Slade uses his skills to set both sides against each other to even out the odds.
Featuring gunfights, sexy women and a hero who does not compromise.
A great read.
