Beasts of Prey

Rate this book

Women convicted of murder are being sentenced to the wild.

A fast-paced, award-winning action-packed thriller.

One year has passed since Lydia Brone was convicted of murder and sentenced to serve time on remote Kormace Island—the Island of Killers—for accidentally killing her mother's abusive boyfriend.

After a slow and painful integration into a brutal, self-sustaining society of women, she was assigned the prestigious title of Archer, attracting both friends and enemies.

But now, none of that matters. Everything she cares about is gone.

Beasts of Prey, the gripping second book in The Feral Sentence serial, continues where the first book left off—in the chilling aftermath of a violent massacre.

All that remains is Brone’s relentless will to survive and her hope for a better tomorrow.

This book is the compilation edition of the second book in The Feral Sentence serial and contains all four episodic parts / novellas found in Book 2.

The principale caracter is not very stable. She's very impulsive for a leader. Can’t wait to read the next book.

The Feral Sentence Serie is truly a MUST-READ for anyone who loves really fantastic dystopian adventures. But this isn’t a light and fluffy read- be warned! This is gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE. There are potential triggers contain throughout the series such as violence, murder, abuse/domestic abuse, manipulation, and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of these subjects.
I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and I am soooo glad that I did because I was so hooked on the story within the first few pages that I practically inhaled the entire series in only a couple of sittings. It is entirely addictive- the characters, the ‘world’, the story makes for completely riveting reading.
Shade Owens world building skills are sheer perfection. I was transported into the story, struggling to survive right alongside Lydia and the rest of the cast. Ms. Owens writing is immersive, captivating, vividly exciting, and entirely addictive. I am hooked and will happily devour anything she ever produces, because WOW.
This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, dystopian thriller- with adventure, danger, violence, a fight for survival, friendship, battles, dramatic developments, savagery, fantasy, a remote island prison, jungle, no escape, politics, corruption, brutality, futuristic sci-fi, factions, war, games of cat and mouse/mind games, challenges, risk, betrayal, and SO, SO, SO MUCH MORE.
The Feral Sentence introduces (and follows) eighteen-year-old Lydia Brone who has been sentenced to Kormace Island- a penal colony for the worst of the worst inmates and is known as the Island of Killers. She is transported to the island after killing her mother’s violent boyfriend accidently while trying protect her mother- but the helicopter doesn’t ever ‘land’ on the island, instead Lydia is thrown from the airborne helicopter into the ocean, where she has to swim to the ‘safety’ of land. But this is only the start of her survival adventure, as just because she finally reaches land, doesn’t mean she’s ever really ‘safe’- at all. And so, the intensity and adventure begins.
Lydia, and the rest of the cast of characters are so well-developed with their own unique individual personalities, quirks, and flaws. Shade Owens has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and vivid- painting a powerful picture of Lydia, the island environment, and the quest for daily survival. Right down to the living conditions, camp, ‘native’ clothing, tools, food, jungle, animals, hunting, scouting, battle scenes, intensity, suspense, the ’feral’ vibes, and every other engrossing detail. Just brilliant!
The series contains:
-The Feral Sentence: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #1)
-Beasts of Prey: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence #2)
-Primal Instincts: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #3)
-Reign of Blood (The Feral Sentence #4)
-Game of Death (The Feral Sentence #5)

This would definitely make a fantastic movie or television series!
Highly Recommended Reading!!!

This is a serialized novel about an island that has been turned into a prison for women, but only those that have been convicted of murder. Each segment is about 70 to 80 pages in length. Four segments make a season of the series. You can buy the individual segments or buy collections for each season.

This is the second season.(segments 5 to 8) The second season focuses on Brone (the main character) being captured by the northern tribe of women. Along with a few of the other survivors of the raid, Brone is made a slave.

I was really hoping to start learning more about the island. While the reader does get to learn a few items, it is very little for 4 segments. It is also confusing about when this story takes place. At times, it seems to be very current from comments about pop culture that the women make. But then it also has comments that make it seem like it is 30 or more years into the future (2050 to 2060). New questions arise about what is actually going on with the island. A few are at least partially answered like why there are so many animals from diverse regions (they were put there so the women could hunt basically).

Being a serialized novel has advantages and disadvantages. Even though each segment is relatively short, the entire story ends up being huge. This format allows the author to develop the story and the characters slowly. This slow development means you can get a lot of detail but can seem to be dragging if you read a lot of the segments together. There is also the matter of every episode ending with a cliffhanger. This isn't bad if you have more episodes waiting but can be annoying if you have to wait a long time for the next part. But if you do read a lot of segments back to back, the series can feel like it is dragging and start to get old. I feel it is best to take a break from the series every so often.

At this point, the reader has read between 600 and 750 pages. The story has changed directions and changed most of the characters. After the first season (segments 1 to 4), the women of the southern village are out of the story for most of the second season. There are some indications that they may appear in the third season though. The second season seemed to drag on, with little development. In fact, the whole story seems to be still in the opening stages which is very long for over 700 pages. I could easily see each season losing most of a segment without losing that much of the story and greatly increasing the flow of the overall story.

Even though, the book ended with the normal cliffhanger, I still found that I was more than ready to take a break from the series after having read the first 8 segments back to back. I will read the next season, but I just need to step away from the series for awhile.

Shade Owens
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I liked that there was a recap of the previous book at beginning. Again, the pacing was great and I'm still really enjoying Shade Owens' writing style.

In this book Brone is starting to become more confident. She takes charge in certain situations and helps those she can. She has her moments where she loses control of her emotions and her actions but for me, that makes her character even more relatable.

I like how some of the main themes were resilience and strength despite the awful conditions of the island and the challenges Brone and the other women faced.

The exploration of the island outside of their village was interesting. I was surprised by some of the things that Brone discovered and I'm curious to find out more about who else is on the island.

The ending of this book was a bit better and I can't wait to read the next one.

An island vacation it's not

Brone has worked to survive, that seems to be all she can do some days. After the raid on her village she and Coin struggle to find survivors so they can regroup. Just as it seems they and a small group can finally reunite with friends the Northers strike again. As they navigate through the prison environment though the purpose is to break them Bronze survives. As Ellie told her Hope is the key. And that is the basis of this book. Life can be brutal, but Hope helps you survive.

This book just wasn’t for me. I found the main character hard to connect with, and most of the other characters didn’t work for me either. On top of that, a few comments came across as unnecessarily prejudiced, which made the reading experience less enjoyable.

What kept me turning the pages was the plot itself, which does deliver on mystery and tension. And while much of the book frustrated me, the cliffhanger at the end really saved it. Because of that twist, I might pick up the sequel someday… though definitely not anytime soon.

Author Julien is one talented individual! Although this story doesn't conclude, which would be a tragedy, it is well written, great character development, and above all, believable. Her characters do what you would expect real people to do and they stay true to form. Clean editing, a smooth writing style, and loads of suspense make this a great read. Looking to many more episodes of this wonderful series.

Could not put it down

I am so rooting for Brone!! I want her to just pulverize the Northers. Yet I am so sick and tired of Coin. I am hooked on this series even though there are times when I get lost and I have to go back just to familiarize myself with what is going on. I lose sight on who is what. But I will not give up on the book because I love it and so will you!!!

Great!

Book 2 of The Feral Sentence continues the story of Brone and her life on the prison island. I was just as absorbed in her tale as I was in the first book. Can't wait to read book 3!

Wow!! I cannot believe how good this series is so far. Just non stop, page burning fight for survival. Kormace island where women murders are dropped off instead of wasting Gov't money to house them. What ensues is a fight for their survival.

Better than I thought it would be. Imprisonment on a island for women convicted of murder. Is it the future for convicts? Kind of scary but interesting.

This book is like Survivors mixed with Hunger Games. It can be pretty brutal at times and you never know who is going to make it through the day or not. The characters are growing on me and I’m becoming more invested in knowing what’s happens to them. Good read, but not for the faint of heart.
