The amount of information in the book that has helped me with what's needed for potty training is around 10% of the book. The rest was filler. It even had recipes in it... not what I was looking for.

About 10% of the book is actual practical method and advice... the rest is filler about her life, the history of nappies and selling the My Carry Potty which she created. (To be fair, this is one of the reasons I bought the book - I've seen the My Carry Potty in action and it is great!)

Her method is definitely aimed at toddlers older than my 20 month old, despite the fact that he's showing all of her 'signs' that he's ready. She recommends a very sweet and fun reward system where you build up stars for asking to sit on the toilet/potty, doing a wee or doing a poo and then get prizes once you reach a certain number of stars. At 20 months, my toddler has no concept of waiting wor working towards a prize, so I don't think this method will work unless there's an immediate reward.

She also encourages cold turkey on the day time nappies, pants and trousers straight away, and getting out of the house asap (she suggests day 3) so that your little trainer gets used to no nappies outside the home too.

All in all, a good method that makes sense and is definitely less intense than some. Not sure it will work in its entirety for us, but will definitely adapt some of the ideas when we're ready to tackle this!

I found this book to be a thoughtful and thorough book about potty training, although the concepts are pretty basic. It’s worth a read. I will be incorporating my toddler’s baby doll and a second potty for her while we are potty training. Now I know that I can use both the baby’s potty and the trainer seat. Thanks!

Brilliant book for potty training. Method is so easy to follow and adapt to suit your little one. Answers pretty much any question you would have as well.

"Potty training doesn't have to be a battle; it can be a magical time of connection, trust, and progress."

Potty Training Magic promises a fast, fun route to nappy-free bliss, but in practice it reads more like a laminated checklist than a genuinely helpful guide. The method centres on a three-day plan, complete with sticker charts, celebratory dances, and a 'potty party' atmosphere. There are useful reminders (watching for readiness cues, keeping routines consistent), but much of the advice feels recycled from any generic parenting blog.

The tone is relentlessly upbeat, which might motivate some parents, but it often feels borderline patronising. Jenner writes as if every toddler will respond with enthusiasm and immediate success if you follow the steps exactly. There's little room for nuance: no strategies for kids who scream at the sight of a potty, refuse to sit still, or regress after a few dry days. The approach assumes compliance, not chaos, making it feel disconnected from the reality most parents face.

Illustrations and exercises are bright and engaging, but some are over-engineered (like the 'potty passport' and themed reward charts that require more prep than the actual training). It's as if the book is trying to turn toilet training into a party rather than a developmental milestone that often involves tears, tantrums, and laundry.

Setbacks are glossed over. If a child isn't 'getting it', the advice is essentially 'try again later', with little guidance on troubleshooting or adapting. The book does offer clear steps, creative reward ideas, and a consistent message about patience, but it never fully embraces the messy, unpredictable reality of toilet training.

Two stars: cheerful, readable, and well-intentioned, but too rigid and idealised to be truly useful for parents navigating real-world toddler chaos.
