A really irritating main character. And the author didn't try to make characters complicated. If developed well "bad guys" could be more interesting, and the plot was promising. The main character just ruined it all

description
Before The Broken Star is a new series from the amazingly talented Emily R. King and it's a new masterpiece.
Everly Donovan's family was murdered when she was younger by a traitor thought to be a friend. She would not have survived her family's slaughter if not for her Uncle finding her after a sword had been thrust in her chest. Her uncle Holden miraculously saved her with the help of some sort of clock heart and Father Time (a God, I think, Evie didn't really know the details).

Emily R. King has done it again. She has taken me from the hustle and bustle of my every day life into a magical world of adventure and suspense. Before the Broken Star is yet another work art by Emily R. King.

My blog: A MAGICAL WORLD OF WORDS

Source: Netgalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts are my own.

3.5 stars.

I haven't read The Hundredth Queen series yet (although I'm dying to) but when I got the chance to read and review King's latest novel, I couldn't say yes fast enough.

King's writing is lyrical and melodic. Sometimes too much so - in the first chapter, the sentences are unnecessarily purple prosy and hard to read - but generally the writing is beautiful. I also like h

I received an advanced copy via the publisher from Netgalley for an honest review.

Wow.....just, wow! This novel I think is an all new level of amazing and something that I completely did not expect, but entirely in a good way. Emily introduced an incredibly amazing, whole new world that just sucked me in and kept me completely guessing. Tying some amazing mythology, religious beliefs (in the novel, not preaching), and some fantastic bad ass women with a steampunk flare! This was a whole new amaz

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 out of 5.

Is it possible to absolutely love a book, but detest the main character? That is exactly what happened here. There was so much going on and the secondary and minor characters as well as locations were amazing, but Everly (with the gorgeous name) was just not likeable. At no point in the story was she redeemed, but I loved the stories and the Cat and Fox and fell in love with Jamison and gasped and oohed and ahhhed my way through the

Once again, Emily R. King crafts an immersive and fantastic new world with a strong female lead I couldn't help but feel for and root for. Everly is complex and her flaws are real (I can't stand the trope of the perfect female lead, and I applaud King for not taking the easy way out and simply making Everly a perfect, bland Mary Sue, especially considering her traumatic past would NEVER have made that believable!). Her motivations carried her (and me) throughout her wild, intense journey.

King has created a beautiful and intricate world with a mythology that is unique. This world grows more and more interesting the longer you read, revealing new wonders throughout. The protagonist Everley is a fantastic character whose complexities and flaws make her a real person to the reader. She is relatable and understandable because she is not perfect. King has a beautiful, fast-paced book that keeps the reader engaged from page one.

Before the Broken Star is the start of a new series by Emily R. King who wrote the Hundredth Queen series that I read. I enjoyed this new book and the new heroine Everly Donovan. She is feisty and tries hard to do what she thinks is the right thing—but just as in real life—it doesn’t always work out. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Emily R. King is a reader of everything and a writer of fantasy. Born in Canada and raised in the USA, she has perfected the use of “eh” and “y’all” and uses both interchangeably. Shark advocate, consumer of gummy bears, and islander at heart, Emily’s greatest interests are her four children. She’s a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and an active participant in her ...more
