Susan Clayton-Goldner continues to write novels that strike at our emotions and our worldviews. In this new novel we are faced with the concept of Racism and the effect it has on a community as well as on individuals. I must admit that the book smacked me in a way that I didn't like at first, that is because I have no room for racism. I was raised with the Christian Worldview that all men are created by God in His image. Thus, all men are created to honor and glorify God and delight in Him, at l ...more

OMG! Wow, I could not put this book down. Susan Clayton-Goldner is getting in the habit of serving up a story I think is going to go a certain way and then “boom” it drops into another gear. Character driven fiction is how I first described this wonderful writer when I found my first story written by her “A Bend in the Willow” (highly recommended by the way!). I think the term still applies to this story, another in a continuing series involving Arizona turned Oregon detective Winston Radhauser. ...more

I’m again almost at a loss for words .. but not quite. Susan has done it again in her crafting of ‘River of Shame’. As always happens when I read one of her books I was soooooo disappointed when I reached the last page as I wanted it to go on forever. The story again revolves around Detective Winston Radhauser faced with the unenviable task of solving multiple crimes in the area involving abduction, mutilation, racism, homophobia, white surpremacy and murder all of local teenagers. While the boo ...more

I have read all of the books that Susan has written and sent to me for my review and every one has been truly outstanding. This one, 'River of Shame' is by far the best one and I would recommend it to anyone who really likes mysteries. It was a book that I had difficulty putting away so I could sleep. She does excellent research on all her books and her characters are so realistic and true to every day life. So glad that she remembers me when she needs a review on her latest book.

Let's get through the preliminaries. I received a pre-release copy from the author to review. This is the 4th Winston Radhauser novel I have reviewed. I have no connection to Susan Clayton-Goldner other than her requests to review her books.

Ok. Here is the bottom line: I loved this book! It is the first Winston Radhauser novel where we have been totally inside his head. We get to see what he is thinking and what is important to him, how he approaches a criminal investigation, and how he goes abo

"River of Shame" is the fourth book in the Winston Radhauser series, and it continues the themes of the first three: family life and human relations, thrown into high relief by violent crime.

The story starts a few months after the end of book #3, and is set in the small town of Ashland, Oregon. Radhauser is supposed to be on vacation to help his wife, who is starting chemotherapy after giving birth to their son. But a series of heinous hate crimes, culminating in a murder on Radhauser's own prop

Winston Radhauser has a complicated life as this book begins. Radhauser is a detective with a small department in Oregon. This is Winston Radhauser’s second chance at having a family. He values them so much more having lost his first family tragically.
In this small town everyone knows each other’s business which is a good thing and a bad thing.

Racial crimes are being committed here. Something unheard of. Someone has formed a white supremacy group. Who is responsible for these hate crimes? Are

Our favorite detective Winston Radhauser is back and solving more crimes in Arizona, OR. Radhauser is a very kind and good hearted man. When he walks into a crime scene he lets the scene and the bodies tell their own story. He takes the time to look at each little minuscule detail. Each crime scene has a story to tell and Radhauser reads each and every crime scene like a story or book.

River of Shame is about racism, white supremacy, and homophobia. It is about high school kids being branded wit

River of Shame, (A Winston Radhauser Mystery 3), Susan Clayton-Goldner

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:, suspense, General fiction (adult)

My third book from Susan, and its as fabulous as the other two. I missed the first Radhauser mystery, but feel as if I know him now. He's the kind of policeman all should aspire to be, won't give up, seeks the truth, not the convenient answer and is such a genuine caring man.

When we meet him at the start of this book I understood why his wife was

Looking for a series to sink your teeth into with characters well fleshed out that you can relate to? This is a series I highly recommend!

Ms. Goldner’s serial detective Radhoser gets involved in a personal level with the hate crimes taking place in peaceful Ashland, Oregon. He has employed a high school student of bi racial background as a stablehand while his wife Gracie recovers not only from C-section childbirth with their baby Jonathan but also from the chemo she postponed to have the baby.

River of Shame - the 4th book in the Winston Radhauser series. I've read them all, each one a very different murder mystery, but all share the depths of grief Detective Radhauser lives with in his own life. His wife and son loose their life in a car crash caused by a drunk driver. Each book, and each story bring to mind how feelings of grief, loss, and loneliness affects his life and thoughts as he pursues finding the motive and the person who caused the death of another.

This is the fourth book in the Detective Winston Radhauser series.

Another gripping mystery from Susan Clayton-Goldner. As always, there are multiple suspects and possible motives. And as usual, it turns out to be somebody you would never in the least have expected.

Poor Gracie Radhauser! She’s recently undergone a radical mastectomy for breast cancer, just had a baby, and is due to begin chemotherapy today. And although her husband, Winston Radhauser, is supposed to be taking time off work to hel

Another magnificent story by Susan Clayton-Goldener!!! I always have to think about how much reading time I have before I pick up a novel by Susan Clayton-Goldener. If it is late, I won't be able to put it down, as a result, I will be reading late into the night. Her writing is beautiful. She packs a sentence with beautiful descriptive words. You feel like you are there experiencing exactly what the character sees. The beautiful writing will follow you all the way to the end of the book.

Susan Clayton-Goldner has done it again with book #4 of her Winston Radhauser Mystery series. I started River of Shame thinking I'd figure out whodunit as I've done in other mysteries I've read. Wow! Was I wrong. This is one of the best books I've read in terms of an ending that comes from left field. There are clues throughout the book yet the end is still jolting.

Her characters are vibrant, even colorful, each with a rich depth. She makes the reader love or hate her characters. Susan weaves a

This is the third book I’ve had the extreme pleasure of reading by this newer author and if you have not read her yet you are missing out on watching ‘a star being born’! Each of her books has been amazing and all different crimes with the exception of the same general location. And I have to say the detective who solves the mysteries is someone you’d want living next door to you – extremely kind and humane.

The crimes this time are “hate” and “racial” in nature. Horrible and inhumane acts deliv

Susan has done it again with a great book! This story brings in very controversial issues in our society including racism, homophobia and opiate abuse. What makes these topics so believable are they exist in small town America, Southern Oregon, not a big city like LA or NY or Chicago or Detroit. Susan really makes you realize big issues can happen even in small town America.

Detective Radhauser is a very realistic character and so are other people in this book. This story could happen anywhere in

WOW!! Susan Clayton-Goldner has done it again. What a great mystery this was and I sure did not see the book ending in the way that it did. And the way she brought racism, homophobia, and opiate addiction altogether was really good and it probably happens much more than any of us realize.
As always, the characters are real ---- they are your friends --- and I can’t wait to find out more about them. This book is a real page turner. I

Susan Clayton-Goldner has done it again in her 4th book of the Detective Winston Radhauser series! This book keeps you guessing until the very end. The reader can tell the amount of research the author must have done to write about how a detective operates. Her topics of crimes are current and important. Nice mystery. Wonderful addition to series. I have only read book one in this series and this is book four. Stands alone very well. I need to catch up and read the books I missed.

I found the subject matter disturbing and can see this happening unfortunately in our society today. Why, I do not know because if you close your eyes then how can you tell who to discriminate against? I personally fin

This was a great mystery on its own, so if you haven't read the other books in the series yet you will still be able to appreciate the mystery and follow along as the drama unfolds. Real life issues shine through in this fast paced mystery novel!
The suspense aspect was very well done. It gave the characters something to deal with and showed their ability to connect while under pressure. It also focused on a community as a whole and how others dealt with the type of crime.

The first three books in the series were page turners that I read non stop without bathroom or eating breaks. River of Shame is beyond belief good. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Racism, hate crimes and opioid abuse, as well as child pornography, all feature in the latest installment of the Radhauser murders. Radhauser finds himself working reluctantly with the FBI to look into the hate crimes, which come all too close to his own home. We learn much more about Radhauser, his home and friends.

This chilling story has many twists and turns and the ending is totally unexpected. Very readable.

Ms. Clayton-Goldner is simply not writing them fast enough! 😃 This was quite the emotional read, which I had to stay up till 2 am to finish. One minute I was crying, then I was shaking with rage. There are characters you will absolutely love and characters you will absolutely hate! I highly recommend it!

This is a mystery at its best. It will make you want to cuddle up for a while and get lost in the story and world Susan Clayton-Goldner has created.

Radhauser is such a great main character, I feel like I connected right off the bat and that really helped me get invested in the story.

Radhauser's voice was so easy to get into my head.
