Olivia is an American living in a Middle Eastern country, Behruz, a part of the royal family and under the Sultan’s domineering rule. Rebellion and violence forces Olivia to seek out her old lover, Rashid. She begs for his help to escape and he agrees. As they travel throughout rugged landscape fleeing for Iran, desire and love explode between them. Can she keep her dark secret from him or will he discover the infant she’s caring for is in fact, his and hers?

Escape from Behruz is an unexpected delight to the reader’s senses through descriptive narration. As I was reading, I closed my eyes and could smell, taste and feel what Olivia experienced. I connected with Olivia immediately and her fear became my fear. The second-chance romance between Olivia and Rashid, while angsty, rang true. The suspense of whether they’d be caught and hung kept me turning the pages. My heart swelled several times, especially at the end.

This is not your normal sheikh romance. Judy Meadows accurately portrays political unrest and the powerlessness a woman experiences in the Middle East. It’s romance with depth and, I for one, can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: He stood gaping at her like the Behruzi men around him. Something in his essence reached for her, and he wanted... Never mind what he wanted. Never mind the memories that assaulted him and pulled on his heart. Losing her two years ago had almost killed him. He would never let himself be that vulnerable again.

My Rating: 5 stars

Olivia and Rashid could have had it all. They were young in love, and soon to be separated by distance and then by lies. Two years later, Rashid is back, but Olivia’s life has changed. She is now a member of the royal family and the sultan has ensured she will never leave his “protection.”

Rashid is a man on a mission, a man with a cause, but he will stop at nothing to keep Olivia safe when the palace and the land come under attack from rebels. As he spirits her away, her young “nephew” in tow, he will have to face the fact that Olivia is no longer his, unless Olivia tells him her most heartbreaking secret, that she never stopped loving him, but she has someone else who needs the protection the sultan promised.

Picture the lands, the people and the unrest in a land where sultans rule and women are mere property to possess. Feel the cultural barrier between the fair American, Olivia and those around her as Judy Meadows tells of true love freely given in a land where love is second to duty and obeisance. Discover how far the love for a child will push the limits of one’s heart as two souls traverse a country in crisis to escape the clutches of power.

ESCAPE FROM BEHRUZ is true romance that doesn’t need graphic details to be erotic in its own way. Judy Meadows has done a remarkable job of creating turmoil of both the heart and the land as she brings a Middle Eastern love affair to life amidst the horrors of rebellion.

Well this was a wonderful journey.

I loved how the information in this story was given to me. Bits and pieces of the past until the whole story was revealed. You know you are enjoying a story when you look up an item mentioned several times (a chador). I loved the sense of family that came from the times with the nomads. I loved reading about a different way of life and how even though both characters still loved each other, both were understandably afraid of being hurt again.

To be true to my own rating system I did deduct one star. Even though there were machinations keeping the couple apart, one part was true when they were together 2 years ago and Rashid did not deal with that until AFTER he was with Olivia.

'Old yearnings tingled from her shoulder where Rashid’s hand had rested right to her core.’

Oregon author Judy Meadows traveled throughout Afghanistan when it was still peaceful, and she lived in Iran for a year and a half. Her son Steve was born in Tehran. Judy now is a doula (Child birth attendant/assistant) and a childbirth educator. She has published two books to date – MIDWIFE IN BEHRUZ and ESCAPE FROM BEHRUZ – romantic novels that are enhanced by both her experiences in the Middle East and her calling as a childbirth educator.

Judy’s experiences bring the aromas, sights, and emotional response to the Persians well. He story is a love story between the American Olivia and the Behruzi Rashid. Before she delves into the plot she offers a scent of the atmosphere of place – ‘Rashid was coming back. She wouldn’t see him, of course. Abu-Khan would make sure of that. But he was coming. Olivia pulled back the heavy silk curtain that framed the only window in the room. A sliver of anticipation sliced through her. Maybe she would see him. She gazed down at the lush expanse of lawn and the high stone wall beyond. There were soldiers, more than usual, milling around the guard station by the main entrance to the palace. One of the officers must have barked some command, because the soldiers suddenly formed a line and snapped to attention. They began maneuvering their rifles from side to side in a drill she’d seen many times before. Why were there so many soldiers? What was going on? A soft tapping interrupted her musing, and she went to the door. It was Jamal’s young nanny, Nargess, with Jamal on her hip. “Good morning, khanoum.” The girl pronounced the title of respect for women in the guttural Farsi of her village near the Iranian border. “Do you want me to put Jamal down for his nap?” “No, I’ll do it. Thank you.” Olivia took the sleepy toddler in her arms and settled his head into the hollow between her shoulder and her neck. She breathed in his baby sweet smell and thought, once again, each precious moment like this was worth all the sacrifices she had made to be with her son. “Nargess…” She had to ask, “Is there any more news?” Nargess took a deep breath. She frowned. “The servants are all worried, khanoum. Nur overheard the generals talking about a meeting that’s supposed to take place at the university tomorrow. They’re sending soldiers to interrupt the meeting. Abu-Khan wants them to teach the dissidents a lesson.” A chill ran through Olivia. Teach them a lesson. That meant bloodshed. “What about Rashid? Have you heard when he’s coming? Will he be staying in the palace?”‘

Scene set, the synopsis reveals the involving story – ‘Rashid will help Olivia and the baby she’s been caring for escape the violence in Behruz, but he must guard his heart. He can’t risk being hurt by her again. Olivia has her own reasons for keeping her distance from Rashid. If Rashid learns that the baby is actually hers—and his—the sultan of Behruz will make sure she loses everything that matters to her. Their escape involves traveling with a group of nomads across the mountains into Iran. As they trek together by day and sleep beside each other in a nomad tent at night, the attraction that has always drawn them to each other grows ever stronger, Can Olivia survive the trip without revealing her secrets and without losing her heart to Rashid once again?’

A fine little romance woven well with intrigue and mystery – and love. A refreshing read.

I voluntarily received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  This story reminded me a little of 1991 movie Not Without my Daughter, in a very broad sense.

This is a story of fighting for love, family, and survival through incredible odds.  Rashid is on a mission to Save Olivia and find out what went wrong two years ago after their one night together and she disappeared from his life.  Oliva a virtual prisoner in the Buhruz Palace and must keep her secrets safe from Rashid or risk losing it all.

When civil unrest threatens the palace’s safety Rashid convinces Olivia to go away with him to where he can keep her safe.  On the road together, living as man and wife the old feelings bubble to life and everything Oliva holds secret threatens to break her and Rashid apart.  Will they escape Behruz together or apart?

The story was sweet, and I would have liked a little more grit and realism for an escape story during civil unrest in a Muslim country.   However, the writing was excellent, very vivid with the details of the landscape it felt like I was there.

I like the usual setting and story line to this romance, It was interesting being set in the middle east with an American woman living in that way of life especially during a revolution. I enjoyed the change of scene but would caution that there is some explicit content in the bedroom-- actually tent scenes. Overall a fun story but I feel it is not for the teenage readers.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Escape from Behruz is a well written romance that draws the reader into story, giving a glimpse into Middle Eastern market places and lifestyle. I loved the descriptive passages as Rashid, Olivia and Jamal make their escape, the sights sounds, smells and people all culminating to paint a picture to delight the senses. Although Olivia and Jamal were threated by danger, most of the story concentrated on their escape from Behruz. The romance between Rashid and Olivia was ignited some years before and when they see each other again under dubious circumstances, they both realise that nothing has changed between, apart from the threat hanging over Olivia's head. Rashid doesn't understand her fear but nevertheless does what he must to get her out of the cauldron of unrest that is threatening to erupt. Whilst an Alpha male, Rashid doesn't come over as arrogant nor does he make demands. Instead his tender caring for Olivia and considerate preparations really touch her heart. I could easily see this book being made into a movie with beautiful stringed melodies wafting through the breeze as the party of bedouins make their way across the mountains. I really did enjoy this book and would be interested to see what Ms Meadows has as an encore. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

Where to begin. I confess, I’ve been caught under the spell of Rashid, a protective and thoughtful man who has come back to Behruz to rescue his loved one from her golden prison and deceitful sultan. But let’s start from the beginning. Rashid is the nephew of the sultan of Behruz who has been married to an American woman. Unfortunately his wife died of disease leaving behind her sister who fell in love with Rashid. From their overwhelming passion she had a son. Under unpleasant circumstances, Rashid left Behruz to get back to the USA and Olivia is abandoned to her fate with a pregnancy. Since the sultan isn’t able to have an heir he convinces Olivia to give her son up for adoption. Her life is completely at his mercy so when a rebellion breaks out, Rashid is determined to go back and rescue Olivia. From this planned getaway the reader will read about a spectacular journey in which he/she will live and breathe the nomads life and its surroundings. Will they finally reach their destination and live their happily ever after? Will Olivia finally reveal the existence of her son to Rashid? That is the reader’s duty to discover. Let me just say that I enjoyed reading this book so much. The characters have a pure soul without any sort of prejudice towards a life that is so simple yet very particular.

Olivia, a beautiful American lady is a child by heart, full of affection and caring for people and animals and knows her priority well. At the critical time of uncertainty, she finds soldiers doing the parade and overhear rumor of bloodshed to teach dissidents lesson by Abu-Khan that caused her worry. Olivia used to live in Palace with a toddler, Jamal, and Nargess, the nanny informed Olivia about the attack to University planned by Abu-Khan in which Rashid was also going to attend for a meeting, so Olivia rushed to Rashid to stop him from attending that meeting. In one hand where Olivia makes her way to search for Rashid, Rashid visits the palace and discover about the disappearance of Olivia. In the outskirts of Behruz, Olivia found Rashid while asking about the veterinarian to treat a sick puppy and accidentally was located by Rashid. After getting the puppy treated in Reza’s pharmacy, they return back to palace in a taxi and there they get some time to remember their moment of intimacy that happened two years ago. This tale is full of political instability, deception and among this chaos, two hearts have emotions and feeling for each other. How Olivia, the American lady reaches Behruz, what had happened between Rashid and Olivia, what is the future of their romance? Will they ever be together? All these questions urge the reader to go through the story in detail.

Escape from Behruz is a very well written Romance novel who has everything you can wish for. The story itself drags the reader in. The story is very well written and the story-line has a clear red thread so it is easy to follow. The characters are very well developed and you start to like them quickly and it dont take long until you start feel for them and with them. I like that the setting is different than for the most books I read. I like the foreign feeling, and how it is very relevante to see it from different perspective. The different perspective and the setting is very important for todays society and culture.

I enjoyed reading this book, it contained everything I want a good romance novel to have. The language is also great and you can feel that the author has worked with the story, the character and the language. The flow is great and it never feels forced like it can feel in some romance novel.

I like that there is a story to the book and not just romance. I have unfortunately found to many romance novels and books that the only thing about them is the romance and sex but that is not the case in this one and that is something I really enjoy. A well written book that deserves a read.

Wow what an amazing journey.  Olivia has lost everyone she has every loved.  Under the care of her brother n law she feels she is a prisoner.  Not allowed to go anywhere or talk to anyone.  She dreams of the man who abandoned her two years ago and the baby she was forced to give away, then care for when her sister died.  She dreams of the day that she can escape or be rescued.

Rashid has returned for his love only to find that she is cold towards him.  He should be the one who is mad for abandoning him two years ago.  But he is determined to make her realize she loves him.  As danger and a country of unrest hits close to home, he must rescue her and get her out of the city.

This was such a well written story.  The book reveals bits and pieces of how she became to be in the situation she is in.  This keeps the reader invested in the story and the end result.  The story flows nice and smooth and is not rushed.  This book has enough danger and mystery to draw readers in and hold the attention throughout.  An amazing adventure of true love and the obstacles the characters have to overcome in order to find happiness and a future without fear.

Rashid and Olivia had a steamy affair that ended badly. Both have had their hearts broken and neither see a feasible way to be together after this betrayal. Unbeknownst to Rashid however, Olivia was pregnant and gave birth to Rashid’s son. To guard and protect her newborn son Jamal, she hides the fathers identity from Rashid’s uncle, the Sultan of Behruz. Planning an escape to regain her freedom, Olivia is relieved and apprehensive that Rashid has returned to help her get away from his uncle. Rashids return has rekindled old feelings that Olivia and Rashid both would rather keep buried, but can they survive the escape as well as their hearts? Will Rashid ever learn the truth about Jamal?
I thought that this was a nice romance book. It was full of hidden dangers, broken hearts, and the slim chances of redemption. The author helped create a satisfying world, and the cultural clashes between Olivia and the people surrounding her appear authentic and believable. I think this was a nice romance, an escape from the everyday.

From the very first page, Judy Meadows pulls you into Olivia’s world, where every decision feels heavy with consequences. Olivia is a layered, complex character—both vulnerable and strong, torn between her past and an uncertain future. Her emotional journey is gripping, making every twist and turn hit that much harder.
The story moves at a solid pace, mixing quiet, introspective moments with high-stakes action. Olivia’s transformation is inspiring, and the ending strikes the perfect balance between triumph and bittersweet reality. It’s a story about love, sacrifice, and the fight for freedom, and it leaves you thinking long after you turn the last page.

Overall, Escape from Behruz is a moving and thought-provoking read. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely worth picking up if you love stories that blend romance, political intrigue, and strong, relatable characters. If that sounds like your kind of book, don’t miss out—get yourself a copy of the book and dive into Olivia’s unforgettable journey!

Escape from Behruz is not only a sweet love story, but also a reminder to western women the freedoms we have that we take for granite. Judy Meadows introduces Olivia, an American woman living in the shadows of her dominate brother-in-law, Sultan Abu-Khan. As an unwed pregnant woman, her sister and husband pressured her into giving her baby to them to adopt, providing an heir. The bitterness of being abandoned by Rashid was the deciding factor, never realizing the evilness Abu-Khan would impose on both of them.

I found Escape from Behruz enchanting. Judy Meadows places you right there in the story as you hope Olivia and Rashid can trust each other enough to discover the truth. Meadows writes with a passion as the story unfolds. Her insight into the activities within this middle east territory shows she studied her subject and wove it into the plot. I really enjoyed reading this novel and would recommend it.

This book by Judy Meadows tells the story of Rashid and Olivia. Olivia is trying to escape abuse and mistreatment in Behruz while also trying to save her unborn child, who is possibly also Rashid’s. Rashid works to help guide Olivia through her troubles while also making sure the sultan of Behruz doesn’t find out about their relationship which will only cause more problems. As they journey together through the desert and mountains, Rashid and Olivia find themselves growing stronger in their relationship and even feel a strong spark of attraction that they thought was once gone forever. They must work together to survive in more ways than one.
Meadows has written a unique story in this novel. It’s well-written and features beautiful descriptions that will make it feel as if you’re experiencing the setting and situations in the book yourself. If you’re looking for an interesting book to try out, you’ll want to add this one to your reading list.

There's a lot to like in this book. The characters are believable, with real emotions, and the conflict makes sense in the context of the clash between Western and Middle Eastern worlds. The world-building itself is extremely well-done - I really felt transported to a distant land, and could very much picture the sights, sounds, smells, and overall feeling of being in "Behruz," and later, the mountains bordering Iran.

If I have one criticism, it's a very minor one. Given the setup of Abu Khan's anger, power, and determination to keep his "son," the resolution felt a little too pat. And it was all handled off-camera. But as this was a shorter novel, it needed to be wrapped up more quickly. So it didn't really bother me, I just would have like to see a bit more struggle before the final obstacle was overcome.

Other than that, the writing flowed very well, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Escape for a couple of hours with this story.

Olivia is the American sister-in-law of a despotic sultan, trapped into staying in Behruz after the death of her sister, in order to have contact with her child. The political situation in the country becomes highly volatile and even though Rashid thinks she rejected him two years previously, he is determined to get her to safety by fleeing the country but first he has to get her trust and agreement (kidnapping her wouldn't be the way forward!) However, Rashid is unaware of the reasons why Olivia has remained in Behruz and how downtrodden she has become from constant bullying. Highly recommended story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

I hadn’t read this author before, and the book is different to what I would normally read, but it was good. A little repetitive at times though.

Olivia and Rashid had had one bliss filled night two years prior, and then no contact was made until a chance encounter on the streets.
Olivia has kept a secret from Rashid for all that time. A secret that could change how he feels about her.
Right now, she must flee Behruz. Abu Kahn is under attack and it’s no longer safe for her to stay under his protection. Rashid has a plan to take her away.

These two clearly had a blossoming relationship that could have gone somewhere had it not been for Abu Kahn’s meddling. The fact that they tip toe around their feelings and the goings on two years ago, makes it drag out a touch, but I can see why they would be reluctant.

Escape From Behruz by Judy Meadows takes place in the middle east and is a well written, believable love story. This book tells the story of love between Olivia, an American, and Rashid. They have conceived a child together, although Rashid is not aware the child is his. There is a lot of chemistry between the two characters, romantic and otherwise, but the focus of the story is about escaping from a tumultuous area in Iran. The action starts right from the beginning of the novel, however, the story could have benefited from laying a little more groundwork or background to really set the stage for what is happening. The book slowly reveals what is happening and this does keep your interest piqued until the end. A fairly predictable, yet solid plot moves along and keeps pace until the satisfying ending. Interesting and a little different for your reading enjoyment.

Escape from Behruz is a romantic adventure/thriller by Judy Meadows. Olivia is our FMC and she is living in Behruz as a warden to the royal family, including Jamal the heir to the royal family of Behruz. She has been living in Behruz since she was a young girl and now takes care of Jamal, who is also her secret son. Rashid, her once lover returns to Behruz with no knowledge of Jamal being his own son and not the heir to the throne.
I really liked the interaction between Olivia and Rashid. They are both trying to fight their feelings in the beginning as they were both hurt by the royal family's actions and eventually try to rebuild themselves together as their own family. The story was very engaging to read from my perspective as I love a forbidden romance/second chances/ secret child troupe in books. This was an excellently written romance book and that was a great ending!

ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
They were both in love, but at that time it was not enough.
They parted heartbroken.
Olivia was pregnant, but she never told Rashid.
Rashi still loved Olivia, but he was unsure on how to proceed.
Behruz is in turmoil. A lot of unrest at the moment.
Rashing agreed to help Olivia and her "nephew" to escape Behruz.
They might be on the run, but they cannot deny that they still have feeling for each other.
Will their love be strong enough this time?
It was a very sweet 2nd chance romance.
Loved the storytelling + the characters!

Welcome to the story of Olivia and Rashid. This beautifully written novel by Judy Meadows tells us the story of young love in a foreign land. It tells of love and loss, commitment and loyalties. You quickly get wrapped up into the story of these two young people as they journey through the novel. What I loved most was that in addition to having a great story to read, you learn about foreign customs and how traditions can influence your decisions. This book was like a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend reading this fabulous novel by Judy. I did receive this book as a gift from Judy for my open and honest review.

A Review of Escape From Behruz by Judy Meadow

Rashid and Olivia - 4.5 Stars

This was a new to me author and I was impressed with the storyline. It's different from what you normally think of when you read a book set in the Middle East. There were several twists and turns that were unexpected. The author provides some really great descriptions of the location and the people of the area. It was wonderful to see how kind and friendly people of a different culture could be to a blonde hair American woman. I would definitely recommend it.

A beautiful tale of escape by foot in the beautiful, inspiring country of Iran.

The story itself is great but what I really loved was the imagery that the writer managed to implant in my mind so vividly. I’ve traveled extensively across Asia but have never had the chance to visit Iran. It’s a place that’s always interested me and I’ve always wanted to see and after reading this I know without a doubt that it’ll be the next place I visit.

A tale of love, desire, passion, and hidden secrets, it kept me interested the entire way through, and the ending was just perfect.

What a great book.

I had a real tough time connecting with this book, mainly because of the main character, Olivia. I had a hard time connecting with her from the beginning, her somewhat weak personality frustrated me a bit but at the same time I understand the author was trying to write for a specific culture. However, there was not enough culture or historical context for me to forget her weak personality and focus on learning or understanding the lesson an author was trying to teach. It was an awkward middle place.

Unfortunately, this book was not for me and I can not really say who I would suggest this book for.

Olivia lives in Beirut with her brother-in-law, the Sultan, and his/her son, Jamal. When the political situation in Beirut worsens and Rashid returns to the city, he will do everything to help his great love and the child escape there.
Their escape is not so simple, since they have to escape the violence and the Sultan himself.
While they make the trip to Iran, the attraction between Olivia and Rashid reappears. Will they be able to overcome the problems of the past and be happy now?
This is a very interesting story, just like the characters.

This book is rich in culture and details one of the things I enjoyed the most is the way the author wrote the main characters in a way that I was able to read about the raw feelings of the character which was written beautifully and no matter what they were passing from they were able to overcome it head on. ” I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery.
