“Baby, come to me.”

We are together; his voice intoxicates me, it’s as potent as whiskey. I hold on tightly, but he still departs; leaving me behind. I am Dorothy Kennedy-Denham, heir to Kennedy Electronics. I’ve outlived friends, my children and my love, Nicky. This small house evaporates, and I return to where it began. The lure to remain is powerful, but I have

Behind the Fan is a wonderful, moving story by Caroline Walken. This is my first read by this author and I am impressed by my first foray into her work. The book is a fascinating story being told by Dottie (Dorothy Kennedy-Denham) who is in her advanced twilight years (100). She has lived a long, rich, colourful, love-filled life…. but has out-lived her friends and her beloved Nicky. Now, her family worry about her health and think it’s best to move her into a nursing home. So, as the

What a great novel! My reading year has just started but I already know that “Behind the Fan” will be one of the best reads of 2019! I’m a huge fan of a well-written, gritty historical fiction and in "Behind the Fan" I found everything that I like in a story: a strong female heroine who bravely tackles a career of a burlesque dancer in an era when women were hardly emancipated; a love story that left me breathless; a sisterhood which I admired greatly and applauded those strong ladies for ...more

The story Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken is a wonderful book that I fell in love with each chapter that I read. I found myself getting lost in the pages and not wanting to put it down until I was finished. The story is an emotional journey that I am so glad that I took. I loved reading about the character of Dorothy Kennedy-Denham. She is an amazing woman. She is sassy, independent, and strong. She is a woman whose family decides that it is

As someone "with a past" this book scared me a little. While I already have a plan in place that if I die, a friend will come to my house and get rid of certain things so my family doesn't find them - I never thought about what to do if I am 100 and have outlived them all. I need to put something in place here. hmmmm....

BEHIND THE FAN is about a woman who has lead quite the life. She's had adventures and scandals and all sorts of fun stuff. Some sad and tragic stuff also. She lived her life a

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken
This was both an intriguing and fascinating story and so well-written by author Caroline Walken.
I stepped outside of my normal reading genre to try this book. I’m delighted I did.
The concept is not an easy one to pull off but the author did it in style. She uses flashbacks in time to tell the story; not a new idea, of course, but she gets it spot on.
It is essentially the tale of Dorothy (Dottie) Kennedy-Denham. She is now one hundred years’ old and her

It was a little poetic that the entire time I was reading this book, I was visiting with, and fixing my grandmother's computer. The book is beautifully written, but I think there is a lesson here. Instead of just ignoring that relative with the wrinkled face and white hair at family functions, go talk to them. Like the characters in this book, they could have this epic past and wisdom they want to pass down to you. Dottie is a hundred years old holding on to pass wisdom down to her ...more

I give Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken, 5 stars.

Dorothy Kennedy-Denham has lived a long, long life. At almost 100, she has out-lived her husband and her children. Now comes the time where she is no longer able to live in her own house any more. Her 2 granddaughters and 2 great-granddaughters come to clear her house and get ready to move her into a home. Little do they know just how life-changing this event will be for all of them. They are each broken in their own way. When they learn more

Caroline Walken was a completely new author to me. I was not sure what to expect going into this novel and went in with a completely blank slate. I didn’t read the reviews or blurbs, the front cover simply drew me in. Frankly, the lot of her available covers drew me to the author, I was kind of on one of those one-click late night binges.

This story gave us a backstage pass to the world of a woman that is grasped tight within the disease of Alzheimer’s. We get to follow along on her journey

So when I first read the blurb for this book I will admit I was intrigued, I had no idea what kind of story I was in for so I was really looking forward to jumping right in. Behind the Fan was a great read! It was nice to read something a little different and I loved the uniqueness of the storyline. I really enjoyed the characters and reading their story. This is my first read by this author and I sincerely enjoyed it. It took me a bit to read it because I'm just not big on starting in the present and then most of the story moving to the past, but in saying that in this particular story it worked. It was what made the book.

I absolutely fell in love with Dottie, her story and how she handled her grandchildren was simply awesome. I loved how the stories of the Grands and the Great grands all came out and then

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken is the first book I’ve read by this author but I wasn’t disappointed. I was drawn into the book and couldn’t put it down.

Dorothy never expected to outlive her family but she did and now they have decided it’s time she goes into a nursing home due to her health. When it’s time, her family begins to sift through her belongings and they realize there is a whole past they knew nothing about. Dorothy’s episodes take her between the present and her past and we get to

What a powerful, moving story! This book took my breath away from the beginning. There are few books that I wish I could forget what happened, just so I am able to experience the story all over again, but this book makes this list. This follows the life of Dorothy Kennedy-Denham, heir to Kennedy Electronics. She is well into her golden years and her family has decided to pack her life away into cardboard boxes and send her to assisted living.

Wow! This was truly an amazing read!

This is a beautifully told, multilayered story that intertwines with past and present, and between romance and paranormal. Very emotional and gripping.

The writing is strong and vivid, which only brings the settings and characters to life even more. Dottie’s story hooked me, and I loved how real and true she was as a character. Not to mention how her memories affect her relatives.

I highly recommend this wonderfully told story. Extremely moving.

Behind the Fan was a great 5 star read.
This was my first read from this author and I was pulled right in.

Dorothy’s (Dottie) story was a page turner. Due to some episodes of absence of presence (Alzheimer's), her family decides it’s time for her to go into a home.

As they are packing up Dorothy’s things they are discovering a past they never knew about and are surprised and shocked. We shift from past to present as the story moves forward. I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster with

This is my first book by this author and I loved it. I loved how her writing style went from present to past with ease and no confusion. This book is about an older woman who has dementia. This story took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next. I felt as if I was right there with the characters and going through the life this older woman has had. I highly recommend this book.

What a beautifully written book. The author does an amazing job weaving the plot together, developing these fantastic characters, and drawing the reader deeply into the tale. I appreciated how well the story developed, even when shifting from past to present (not all authors do this successfully). This was a mesmerizing page turner that I couldn’t put down until I finished it completely. Wonderful book.

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken is such a unique and one of a kind read! It’s an unforgettable story about life, relationships, family and a once in a lifetime type of love. This was my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last as I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken is a Paranormal Romance. I usually do not read anything that is in the Paranormal genre, but I gave this book a chance. This story is about Dorothy Kennedy-Denham, her family has decided to put her in a nursing home due to memory loss. Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken was not at all what I was expecting. I didn't realize it was going to centered so much around family.

I'm about the age of Dot's granddaughters, I was quite young when my Grandma died and wish I could have had a relationship with her as an adult. I could definitely see her being as fiesty as Dot in her old age.

Dot had an amazing life and her stories proved it. This story will stay with me for quite a while in the best possible way.

Behind the Fan is the first book I read by Caroline Walkin and it will not be my last. I found that her writing style to flow and interesting. The way she was in the here and now and then she was in the past was made reading the story enjoyable. Dorothy Kennedy-Denham is the main character and she has Alzheimer’s. It is amazing how your body goes on like the energizer bunny and one day do not even remember member of your family and friends. With this story I had ups and downs, laughs and cries, ...more

I couldn’t help but be intrigued when I first came across Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken. It was such a different, yet refreshing read. I was very impressed with this authors writing style, as the world development is outstanding. The characters were easy to follow, and I couldn’t help but feel attached to them. Let me start by saying what a book. You read the summary of the book and what it might bring as you read. It’s nothing compared to what you actually read. The blurb doesn’t give it enough justice. If I can be half as inspiring when I’m older as the main character I would be lucky. The first book I have read by this author and it was a cant put down kind of book! She is absolutely brilliant. The writing style, her descriptions, and the general story itself was amazing. This is a book you will ...more

An interesting concept about a woman with Alzheimer's who drifts in and out of her memories from when she was a young woman. Dottie has led an eventful life that comes as both a shock and surprise to her daughters and granddaughters. Written in a literary style this has a little bit of everything, romance, intrigue, mystery and a family saga that reveals itself as Dottie's life story unravels. An enjoyable read.

What a ride and what a love story! I was so moved by the relationship of Dottie and Nicky - a love that survived hardships and the passage of time. I thoroughly enjoyed looking into the bygone world of burlesque and the mob. I re-read it to make sure I didn't miss any of the events of Dottie's life in the present or her "absence of presence". So worth the read!

A paranormal romance that pulls you in. Unique storytelling and a touching story.
I liked the author built the story by going back on the life of the main character. We go back to her life in the burlesque world with mobsters.
Emotional, it's a look at our own mortality and how to make most of life and not have regrets.

"Personable and Wistful"

I enjoy a story that can catch my attention quickly. Behind The Fan did just that. I couldn't wait to read about how Dottie and Nicky finally got together and how Dottie was able to raise her little brother at such a young age herself. Not to mention reading the history and mob stories about a location that I'm familiar with today. It was fascinating and hit home when thinking about lost loved ones. We all hope our loved ones are really that close.
I kind of hope there will be another book telling us about their married life and kids!”

Sweet and interesting story
ByWriter and Readeron September 5, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition
How much do we really know about the long lives of our grandparents? When 100-year old Dottie is suddenly surrounded by her family as they decide to move her into a nursing home, a box of glamour photographs is revealed, showing a stunning enchantress behind a fan of ostrich feathers. As her daughters and granddaughters recognise their grandmother as the alluring woman, the story emerges of wild, hard years dancing in a mob-run club, and the great romance finding their grandfather. As the tale is revealed, it gives each of the women in the family perspective and wisdom on their own messy lives. Touching and interesting, I really enjoyed this.”
