When licensed cosmetologist turned publisher's rep Kathy Patrick lost her job due to industry cutbacks, she wasn't deterred. One year later, she opened Beauty and the Book, the world's only combination beauty salon/bookstore. Soon after, she founded The Pulpwood Queens of East Texas -- a reading group that dared to ask the question, "Does a book club have to be snobby to be serious?" The idea spread like wildfire. Now there are about 70 chapters nationwide. The overriding rule -- aside from wearing the club's official tiara, hot pink, and leopard print outfits -- is that the groups must have fun. The club's To get America reading.
THE PULPWOOD QUEENS' TIARA-WEARING, BOOK- SHARING GUIDE TO LIFE celebrates female friendship, sisterhood, and the transformative power of reading. It includes life principles and motivational anecdotes, hilarious and heart-warming stories of friendships among the Queens, and stories from Kathy about the books that have inspired her throughout her life, complete with personalized suggested book lists.

I rarely read more than one novel at a time, yet I was reading two, when The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing Book Sharing Guide to Life arrived in my mailbox. As a member of The Pulpwood Queens Book Club, I looked forward to reading this book, as it promised insight into the woman behind the magic, yet my intention was to read this book after I'd finished the others. One glance at the first page out of curiosity and I was helplessly roped in. Kathy Murphy came out swinging in her delightful memoir. It is laden with the kind of personality so thoroughly engaging and unique that you simply trust it as you hang on every word! A series of riveting vignettes comprise this book, and interspersed throughout are terrific book recommendations. Kathy Murphy gives us a map to her own education, and she does so with wit, humor, and charm. This is a magnanimous heart of a book that is the best memoir I've ever read! I suggest you read this utterly inspirational book and tell all your book-loving friends!
I read Kathy L. Murphy’s delightful book because I just joined her wildly famous, international book club. It was the thing to do to get up to speed. I reveled in every word. I delighted in references to things like cake mascara and thick yarn hair ribbons, popular in the late 60s and 70’s. I was in awe of Kathy’s acumen with so many books and quotes. I was inspired by her world-wide commitment to literacy. Mostly, it was a delightful romp through the love of reading and the power of books to change, empower, and enrich our lives. BRAVA!
Kathy L. Murphy provides the reader with a little bit of everything in this book - autobiography, character sketches, how-tos, recipes, and lots of book club fun. I enjoyed learning how the Pulpwood Queens came about, the beauty of community, and all of her positive affirmations sprinkled in. Every chapter ended with spectacular book recommendations themed what had just been discussed. Enjoy!
As a card-carrying member of the Pulpwood Queens, I can say this book captures the book club and its founder beautifully. The story of a woman (Kathy L. Murphy now) who dedicates her life to promoting books is an inspiring tale. I adore that she included a tbr list and recipes. The book drips with Southern charm and fills me with hope that I too can do great things.
Living life through the eyes of Kathy was light, fun and entertaining. I also enjoyed how each chapter ended with a list of books. I found many I may want to read.
I would have give. This book more stars, but there were so many spelling errors, it became cumbersome. Who is the editor?!! The editor did an injustice to Kathy and her writing.
I Loved the book! I read The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life in two evenings and hated to turn the last page. Kathy is a gifted writer that takes you into her life as though you're seated next to her. I highly recommend it!!!
As a member of the Pulpwood Queens Book Club, I can tell you that THE Queen Herself is an inspiration to everyone who reads her book, joins her club, or meets her in person! Read this book — you’ll ❤️ it!!
Kathy's personality and absolute exuberance for life, books, and reading comes through in this storytelling and inside scoop to how she became the infamous Pulpwood Queen!!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I’ve never met this author, but after reading it feel that I know her quite well – and like what I’ve learned. Her vitality leaps out from each page. The book’s themes highlight her love affair with books and reading. The lists of recommended books she gives after almost every chapter show how voracious and eclectic a reader she is. It was good to see books recommended that I, too, loved as a child, such as The Secret Garden, and picks for adults of authors I enjoy. like Isak Dinesen. Kathy Murphy’s mission of spreading literacy is so important. Sprinkled throughout the book is also her playfulness, such as wearing rhinestone tiaras, hot pink and leopard prints. But this book, among so many other things, is also the story of triumph over childhood adversity, neglect and abuse, told without a trace of self-pity.
