Does a good job of tracing the history of the phenomenon of Muscular Christianity and analyzing it from various perspectives. It also provides good characterizations of the leading figures. On the downside, its near obsessive need to enumerate everything makes it read at times like a narrativized outline. It is also maddeningly repetitive.
