A somewhat dated (it was published in 1990) survey of ordinary people's experiences of ghosts and hauntings, this collection seems to belong to an entirely different era - probably because most of the contributors are recalling experiences that happened many years ago, so that many of the stories are related against a mid-century background of travelling salesmen, long-distance lorry drivers and night watchmen. The overall experience is strangely nostalgic rather than terrifying, although the odd story suddenly grips with an icy grasp and is all the more chilling for the fact that it is the exception rather than the rule.
