The unmissable second instalment of Jenny Colgan's return to the Little School by the Sea - perfect for anyone who ever dreamed of going to boarding school!
After the scandals of the summer, life has settled down for Maggie Adair and the girls of Downey House. But Ismé, the new scholarship girl, is causing trouble.
Downey House is preparing for Christmas - the halls are decorated, the play is in rehearsal - but it doesn't seem to be the most wonderful time of the year. Will the school be able to pull together to celebrate the festive season?

Great read and full of Christmas and trouble at the boarding school and makes you laugh at times with great characters and a very quick read so well worth reading.
I was hooked when I saw the blurb, like Malory Towers for grown-ups, and it really is.
Maggie Adair is a schoolteacher from a rough inner city comprehensive in Glasgow who swaps it all for a position at an exclusive girls' boarding school called Downey House in Cornwall.
The second book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger for Maggie and David, the English teacher from the boy's boarding school just over the hill from Downey House and book 3 starts with the fall out from those events.
I have no idea why I bought this in three parts when the book was available so I am just going to review the whole thing. Neither school is happy with what happened and David has been forced to leave, Maggie has been instructed not to contact David in any way if she wants to keep her job. Both of them face massive upheaval (which I totally won't spoil) and there is a new scholarship girl joining the school.
So if you wished that Enid Blyton had written books for adults then this lovely series could be the one for you.
(4.5). Read during The Reading Rush. Mental health & LGBTQ+ representation. I adore Colgans works and this series/book instalments - especially the Audio book versions
Like with Part 1, this was a great quick read. Catching up with Maggie, David and the rest of the Downey House gang in the run up to Christmas with the girls now in Middle School Year 3. I really love the characters in this series, something Jenny is very good at is creating characters you can’t help but love and root for, and following the various trials and tribulations of the pupils and teachers at Downey House over the new school year. Looking forward to seeing what happens next in Part 3!
Does this count as a book? It is part 2...but what a part 2! I wish my teaching career had been in a boarding school, but then I know I am not refined enough. Maggie's continued toils in the boarding school without David are still a treat to read, and I have part 3 ready for after my 'serious' book!
The second part of ‘Lessons’ carries pretty much straight on from part one and we get to know the characters a bit better, encounter disasters along the way, and it stops on Christmas Eve just before part three will be resolved. Great fun
I got to the end and could only assume there was another in the series. Sadly, from reviews I was not the only one to draw that conclusion. Normally I like Jenny Colgan's books, but this is missing a satisfying ending and it misses it by a mile.
