Not really sure what authors making it big with YA books before switching to the more prestigious genre of adult fiction says about how authors view the YA genre...

Wow, people are getting really mad about this "review." Do they honestly not think that the YA bracket is often dismissed by critics? Only romance receives worse treatment.

After the train wreck Allegiant and skipping Carve the Mark this better be good, I still have faith in Veronica Roth because Divergent (and only book one) was so good

Honestly? 2020 is the year of all the new releases that I never knew I needed. The blessings! <3

i want it!!!!!!!

but I also fear I won't like it. Veronica Roth's books tend to start great and go downhill fast for me.
ex. Allegiant. That was a mess.

YA authors branching into adult writing has either been THE BEST THING EVER or a complete disaster

either way I'm usually always here for it

WHY didn't I know of THIS!?
After Carve the Mark Roth been one of my favourite authors; I know many people didn't like it, but I really enjoyed it. though I feel the Divergent vibes over this than a space sci-fi, I must wait & see. (I liked Divergent too.)
I hope this book doesn't let me down. *finger crossed*

I'll try this because she hasn't written much since Allegiant. I'll give her a chance to redeem herself.
Well, my loyal Pinecones, the time has come for me to review another Veronica Roth book, one which I was lucky to read as an ARC this time. And unlike her last series, Carve the Mark and The Fates Divide, I am very happy to say that I was not at all disappointed. Though it's not quite at the high-water mark the Divergent series left for me, the platinum standard that made Roth one of my all-time faves, it's a damn sight better than that half-baked duology she tried to come back with a few years ...more

"Nobody ever prepared me for what came after. They just assumed I would never find out."

The Chosen Ones is Veronica Roth’s first novel that targets an adult audience, as it digs deep into themes that her Divergent series of novels casually explored. It is a Chicago-based urban portal fantasy novel, with a neat twist on the ‘chosen ones versus the Dark One’ trope. The story begins ten years after a group of five teenagers defeated the murdering and destructive Dark One. For better or for worse

I know I said that I would never read another Veronica Roth book after the dumpster fire that was Allegiant.

And then I read Carve the Mark. And it wasn't Allegiant-bad, but it wasn't great. So I said I would never read another Veronica Roth book again again.

But then I read Ark, which was an Amazon short story and adult fiction and hey, I actually enjoyed it.

So I'm gonna give this one a go since it's adult fiction and maybe that's the genre Roth will shine in.

But if this one isn't good then I'M

Probably one of my favorite reads this year. This is a fascinating take on fantasy that examines the psychological cost of being a titular Chosen One.

This is my NetGalley review, provided in exchange for an uncorrected e-galley:

I have pretty consistently liked Veronica Roth, though I know her last duology was considered problematic and had a pretty divided reception. I was VERY into this book, her first adult novel, especially during Part 1. This book is about Sloane, a woman who has gained notoriety in an alternate version of our current world by being one of five “chosen ones,” teenagers who were prophesied to kill an evil magician known

I was so excited to get my hands on this, and I promised myself I wouldn't read any 2020 books until January, so this was basically one of the first things I tore into now that it's the new year. And I read almost the entire book in one sitting! I'll have a full review closer to release, but it both was and wasn't what I was expecting. The book is broken into three parts: Part I was as anticipated, Part II threw a major wrench into everything and made me re-evaluate all the things, and then Part ...more

Closer to 3.5 stars. I am going to start off this review by saying that I think Veronica Roth is a good writer. I think her stuff is very easy to read and usually pretty compelling (this might sound like a diss but it is not). But I also want to say that while I read, almost obsessively, all the Divergent books when they came out I can't really remember a single thing about them. I think she is a decent writer in the moment, but as time passes I'm not sure I could say how she really stands out. ...more

Thank you to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for an ARC.

Pick this up for an exciting take on the chosen one trope. What happens after you've saved the world? How do you live your life with that weight, trauma, fame? What happens when the world calls for you again...?

Like most of Roth's readers, I was hesitant of what was to come. I don't feel like I need to rehash recycled sentiments but, there was certainly apprehension... until I read Ark that is. Ark was a much needed window into a different side

I was pleased to receive an advanced reading copy from a library shipment. I enjoyed the DIVERGENT series and enjoyed this one as well. The premise is that five teenagers saved the world from a terrible evil called the Dark One ten years ago. Our protagonist, Sloane, is one of those teenagers. They're celebrating the ten-year anniversary of peace when tragedy strikes, and one of their own passes away. After this, there's a major twist that I don't want to reveal, but the Chosen Ones must deal ...more

This book was very cool. I loved the Divergent series and couldn’t get through Carve The Mark, but I was willing to give this adult fantasy novel a chance. The concept was well developed and I quickly grasped the world Roth was creating by the newspaper articles and excerpts of government documents she placed between chapters. Throughout I caught glimpses of similarities to The Hungers Game (our main character Sloane is angry and brooding like Katniss), Harry Potter (the prophecy of essentially ...more

What happens to the Chosen Ones after they defeat the Dark One and save the world? There is no happily ever after, just years of PTSD and living with the trauma and memories, and struggling to find a place in the world that wants to keep you as its greatest celebrities, when all you want is to disappear.
And then one day you get magically kidnapped into a desperate parallel world that needs you, an experienced Chosen One, to defeat THEIR Dark One, please and thank you. See, their Chosen One died,

One of my most highly anticipated books of the year and I was so excited when I received an ARC. Yet it just didn't really do it for me. Maybe I was expecting a lot more about the aftermath of being deemed a "chosen one" and dealing with the return to normalcy after confronting evil. Maybe I was hoping more emotional conflict than action orientated. And it started out really hitting that expectation. But then the second half of the book lost me becoming just another science fiction/fantasy ...more
