Earth has been devastated by all-out nuclear war, with cities worldwide reduced to rubble.
While Washington DC was demolished and is currently uninhabitable due to radiation levels, a settlement in the eastern part of Ohio tries to keep the U.S. government alive, with a revived military, senators, and other survivors. A businessman named Jack Moran is brought to the settlement and asked to be the interim President.
Everyone in this settlement must work hard to build a new Capitol and hold the nation together, rather than letting the country disintegrate into local satrapies. Several miles away, a brutal, dangerous community has emerged, which enslaves or kills survivors they find, and inevitably leads to war against the Capitol.
This novel by the late Robert Conroy, well known for his popular alternate history novels, was recently discovered by his family. While the world has so far avoided a nuclear war, there is no certainty that it won’t happen.
Robert Conroy was a best selling author of alternate history novels. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories.
After taking early retirement from automotive management, Conroy decided to combine his loves of history and writing. After discovering that Kaiser Wilhelm had plans to invade the U.S., he wrote his first alternate history, 1901 in which the invasion took place. He found alternate history fascinating and the possibilities never-ending. He also wrote for Military History Magazine.
Conroy had a MBA, was a US Army Veteran and was a retired instructor at Macomb Community College. He had a married daughter and two grandsons. He lived in southeastern Michigan with his wife of forty-plus years. He passed away in December 2014 from Cancer.
Cracking story well told. A believable plot line with great characters. Good action sequences and well worth the read. Pity it’s a stand alone as would have lived more. That is the power of Mr Conroy, cracking writer.
A very realistic look at how events might have played out if the USA/USSR had gone for a full on nuclear exchange in the days when the number of weapons on both sides were in more limited numbers.
Good story, post nuclear apocalypse, as usual Conroy manages good plots peopled with believable characters. Surprised it was only one story not a series.
